Ask post: What succulent is this?
Wonderful, thank you everyone! I'm very glad to know at least what genus it is, and I'll poke around that Haworthia website a little more. And thanks especially for the care tips, vorfeed.

And for posterity's sake, it appears to be a Haworthia coarctata (chalwinii).

Ask post: What was your favorite course in college?
Intro to Film, Video, and TV Production. Hands on learning with video and film cameras, as well as shooting fake TV interviews on a little sound stage, was absolutely awesome. Completely changes your perspective about movies and TV. I was an English major, and so it was nice to shake it up a bit and study a different medium.

Other than that, my Shakespeare classes were all also great.

Ask post: Groceries discount if you don't have enough money?
As a cashier in a sandwich shop, I have found that many people will just leave their small change, and so I'll use that money whenever possible to avoid giving out obnoxious amounts of coins to subsequent customers. I also use it if some (nice)(friendly) person is short on their cookie/sandwich/drink, even if I don't recognize them as a repeat customer. I've found that people leave small change fairly frequently, so if I waive the difference for one customer, it'll generally make itself up... [more]

Ask post: How to deal with memories of long past embarrassments?
When I was in the sixth grade, I heard a nasty slur for the first time, walking through the hallway at school. Not knowing what this word meant, I called a boy this name in class, a kid who teased me incessantly. He, of course, told on me, and then the teacher embarrassed me in front of the whole class. And I still didn't know what this word meant, and probably didn't for a long time. But this situation kept me up at night for years later; the memory could instantly ruin... [more]

Ask post: Help me be happier!
I just recently had the same problem - way too much free time and no structured activities. It was really easy to spend all my time on the internets or watching tv. I began to limit my tv consumption to shows that I actually really liked, forcing myself turning off the set if I started to flip aimlessly or watch E! *shiver*. Turning to creative output really helped; I tried to write a lot each day, and also got an old guitar and started to teach myself how to play it. It was really fun... [more]

Ask post: How can I write better short stories (science fiction)
I've never been published myself (and haven't tried, yet) but I love to write. I found Self-Editing for Fiction Writers by Renni Browne and Dave King to be really helpful in teaching me elements of story writing that I'd never thought about. While it doesn't focus absolutely on short stories or science fiction, it does cover a lot of bases that I think are useful in any sort of fiction writing.

Ask post: How do I remind my professor to write that letter of recommendation?
Thanks for the advice and the reassuring stories, everyone! I thought that an email would be fine, and it turns out you all were right.

Ask post: Sundry Notes for an Abortive Ethnography of the Asadi of BoskVeld
The Color of Distance by Amy Thomson directly follows an explorer's study of, and integration into, an alien culture. It's been a few years since I read it, but I remember it being pretty good.

Ask post: How do I not know what lights look like?
I see a little glow with my glasses, about the same as in the pictures. I see a far more pronounced glow when wearing contacts, especially if my eyes are dry, which is why I avoid driving at night with my contacts in. If it's really bugging you, I'd definitely see an ophthalmologist.

Ask post: Waiting Games
A friend of mine taught me a number game called FizzBuzz. We played with just the two of us, but I think a small group could work as well. It's essentially a counting game where numbers containing 3 or multiples of 3 are replaced by the word "fizz" and numbers containing 5 or multiples of 5 are replaced with "buzz".

Player One: "1"
Player Two: "2"
Player One: "fizz"
Player Two:... [more]
