ID card holder
Do you live near a medical school, by chance? I would bet they'd have them in the bookstore there. I work at a medical center and the doctors here love them. I bought a bunch in bulk recently but it sounds like you've already found the sites for purchasing that way...

Help me find a rolling cart for an LCD TV
Unfortunately I work in a state university where getting maintenance guys to even do routine things is like trying to get an amendment added to the Constitution. Otherwise that'd be a great idea!

Thanks, beagle, I went to that site and bought one! And I will keep that six pack idea in my back pocket. It's sure to come in handy.

He Can Pluck My Strings Any Time.
Beck might be fun and hip, but IMO he totally doesn't belong on a list of sexy guitarists. I just don't roll that way, although some people obviously do.
I must second Gavin Rossdale. Yum. And Dave Navarro. Yum. And Prince is totally sexy when he starts getting into that guitar, small though he may be. And Joe Perry, even if he is oldre than my dad.
I didn't see Slash up there anywhere. His hair and hat always cover his face, but there... [more]

Cheerwine in DC?
Just FYI, I was part of a Cheerwine focus group a few months ago... they are indeed looking to make a national push. (I live in Richmond, VA.) Not sure when that will happen, but for those of you who love the red goodness, at least know that it's coming! :)

Unique Eats
I love La Grotta in Richmond--excellent fresh Italian in Shockoe Slip.
I second Millie's, a great Richmond experience!
I've never been there, but if you're interested in unique dining experiences, the Positive Vibe Cafe in the Stratford Hills shopping center on Forest Hill Ave is a must--I hear the food is good, and most (maybe even all) of the employees are disabled in some way.
My college roomie and I meet up... [more]

"There is" or "There are"
Wouldn't it be so much easier if we had something like the French "Il y a" or the Spanish "Hay"? :)

What are some compliments you can give strangers without seeming like a creep?
I think the key here is sincerity. I compliment strangers occasionally, but only when I genuinely have something positive I want to say. To me, if you really aren't trying to pick someone up and if you really mean it, it shows. Complimenting physical objects is always safe because if someone's wearing it or using it, chances are they really like it, too. Complimenting physical features is more prone to being misinterpreted from man to woman as a pick up line, so perhaps if you're worried... [more]

Should we discourage silly child's behavior?
Whoa. If I could figure out how to delete this question I would, as I was obviously (from the number of "fucks" being thrown out) out of line in asking it. I guess I just want to save her as much ridicule as possible... although I know that is what makes us stronger people as adults.
And for the record, yes, she's just 9, but if it was typical nine year old attention whore behavior, it wouldn't be of note. I'm not an idiot.

She does have problems in school, is in second grade for the second time now. And her little brother has been diagnosed as autistic, so Wilder's thoughts on testing for ASD might be a good thought.
Thanks to all those who posted constructive comments. I again want to reinforce that this behavior is weighing heavily on the mom and I was just interested in thoughts that might help her deal and that might also help Jenny avoid some of the ridicule I know she suffers at school.

Why did my mom's personality change?
Have you ever considered that controlling husband might actually be abusive husband? Enough beatings about the head can lead to changes like you mention, and it can certainly be a huge factor in changes in relationships with family members if he has brainwashed* her enough. (I say this not as a medical opinion, but as one who has seen similarly drastic changes in her own mother after a 4-year abusive relationship.) A man who wields that much control over his wife is definitely not far off... [more]

Who else is the French Hemingway
One of my favorite French books is Les Liaisons Dangereuses by Laclos... it was one of the first I read in college French lit classes, and I remember finding it pretty easy to read. It's long, but it's such a good book, too!
Thanks for this question, I need to go pull that book off my shelf and read it again!

How can I protect myself from my financially unstable mother?
Ah, this sounds all too familiar. Except in my case, there's no rich family that could potentially provide for care when my mom gets old. She's just flat out poor and unable to take care of herself (by keeping a job) and unable to even make a relationship work that might result in a husband to help out in the later years...
When I was in college, she started asking for things to be put in my name/money/etc. I cried over it about 100 times before I got used to it, but... [more]

Photo Directory in Excel
The reason I'd like to use excel is I already have each candidate's name, school and interview date in an excel doc, so it would be nice to just stick the photo next to each person. The hyperlink idea might work, except what happens when I try to open the document on a computer where the 9 associated documents aren't saved?

How do/does prayer and meditation differ?
What a fascinating question, and what fascinating answers.
I was raised in various types of Protestant churches... Baptist, Pentecostal, Methodist. I never really saw much difference (as a child) besides the different ways they sang. I don't recall "how to pray" ever being addressed, besides having to learn The Lord's Prayer. But I've always prayed.
As a child I prayed for very specific things... I have always had health problems... [more]

Starting Off Negative
I had a similar situation about 10 years ago, although in my case I had no idea where the account had come from. If you didn't open the account, call the creditor and credit reporting agencies and tell them it is not your account, ask for the documentation used to open the account. File reports stating it is not your account and you have no knowledge of it ever having been opened. I am assuming you discovered this account on a credit report, or by being contacted by some collection agency?... [more]
