chain mail definetly produces a tangible product. It can be quite a workout on the forearms, during the winding/clipping phase.

Computer Freezes but mouse still moves
It could be overheating. Did the cpu come with heatsink already attached, or did you do that yourself? One of the most common mistakes in mounting the heatsink to the cpu is to put too much thermal paste on, and just assume the pressure clips will even things out for you.

A simple, lightweight vps monitoring tool?
STAF could be what you are looking for. It provides a lightweight agent that runs on each server to be monitored, and is easily hooked into your scripting language of choice. It's one downside is that, since it was developed for testing environments, the security model is simplistic.

Kayaking in L.A. area?
If you really like 'yakking enough, you might check and see if any of your local rental places offer a boat-share type program. It can be a great deal, where you buy a yak at significant discount from retail, and let the rental place use it as one of their boats. In return, you get free storage for your yak, they insure and repair it as part of their regular business, and you have 24x7 access to their equipment and dock. At the place I go, this means in addition to always having a kayak... [more]

Am I destroying my clutch?
Note that in most states, coasting in neutral is illegal, because it increases your effective reaction time, should you need to accelerate out of the way of an accident in progress. IIRC the WA drivers manual says sitting at a stop light in neutral or park, was a no-no too, but on the other hand, I see signs all up and down our drawbridge approaches telling people to turn off the car while waiting.

Why do my DVD drives crap out so quickly?
Every internal dvd-burner I've had has died eventually, consistently at around the 350 burn mark. Neither of the external drives have died yet, and they are nearing 800 and 450 burns respectively. I suspect heat.

I've never been willing to pay $.10 rather than just plugging in the USB cable, so I've only got experience with the free conversion/email side of things, and those items are definitely NOT stored permanently in my account.

wong is correct, paying the delivery fee does not save a copy. They didn't even email me a copy to save on my own.

It is probably the standard who's who scam. Paying to be listed in these directories is a waste of your money, as no one reads them except the other people who paid to be in them.

One of the most frustrating pieces of video I've watched in a while was Gladiator Days, which is basically the CCTV footage of a man being murdered in prison. The attackers know the camera is there, know the guards are coming, and do what they want before they can be stopped. When you're in for life, 30 days of solitary doesn't mean that much.

OS X file permissions issue
One of the difficulties in mixing unix and windows files systems is the ACL. Unix only knows three types of permissions-ownership, the file-owner, the group-owner, and everyone-else. Windows keeps a full spectrum of permissions for any number of users and groups. If I try to transfer a windows file owned by tom and jane, most unix can't natively support that concept.
And there's another problem...username mapping. At the filesystem level, the computer doesn't... [more]

tips for navigating the myriad harbor
For getting to Harbor Steps, the most cost effective non-public-transit method is going to be Shuttle Express.
For getting to 2400 4th, if you have dropped off the luggage at harbor steps, there are lots of metro routes thru the downtown core. You'll want to go up to 3rd, and see which of the 2,3,4, or 16, is coming next. There might be some others as well, check the bus maps at the kiosks. Note that 3rd is a major transfer point, so not every bus stops at every... [more]

Shell scripting or something better?
for #2 like jobs, I generally use "cut". You can define cuts by character position, or field-position, as well as defining your separator character, eg.
cut -d '\i' -f 2,3 <> outfile.out>

d'oeth, that example should be

What's the filesystem story, morning-glory?
df doesn't report max filesize, only available freespace.
mount doesn't tell you anything about what type of filesystem a remote mount is, only what type of network you used, aka cifs.
posted to Ask Metafilter by nomisxid
at 4:16 PM on May 6, 2008
1. not "space available", max FILESIZE
2. I know that cifs does provide this information between remote systems, you can get a windows error message that specifically states the remote filesystem isn't compatible with your filesize, which is different than the error message it gives when there isn't sufficient free space.

Do I understand correctly, you have an x-server running on the macbook, and you want to start a second one on the remote machine? Sounds like maybe you want x2x, not x11 forwarding. X forwarding is at an application level, not a window manager level.

People who live under a rock
Some people, when they run across something that confuses them, they stop, research, and basically don't move on until they've satisfied their curiosity. Some people, they just go around the obstruction. It's much easier to be ignorant than it is to learn.

The single most important question you'll answer today
I suspect that the OP wonders much along the lines that I do in this situation, namely, if I can complete my stop legally, before the prior car leaves the intersection ahead of me, have I really made the legally required stop, or do I have to wait until they've completely left the intersection before I can "count" my stop.

How to make my own karaoke discs from scratch?
Karaoke discs are the one last remnant of CD+G technology. Basically, it allows you to create a series of static image files that are timed to the audio tracks on the CD, which of course is ideal for karaoke.
this site has a tutorial, but assumes you have karaoke mp3s, and are willing to buy some custom re-authoring software, so usefulness will vary, but it should give you a grounding in the basic concepts required.

What do you get when you buy some art?
great answers all, which bring up a follow up questions,
1. I have the original of a piece that, after an artist's death, his estate wishes to turn into a retail print. Is it safe to assume that they would have to negotiate access to my 'original' in order to turn their 'right' into an actual product?
