Regrets? I have a few, but then again...
When it gets warm enough to wear shorts, my tat becomes visible, and it's interesting to compare the reactions between the americans and the people from other countries.
The conservative americans I work with aren't shocked, they've seen a tat before at work, but they make it obvious that on the inside, they are rolling their eyes at 6000 rpm.
The 'hip' americans want to know what it means, how old it is, and so forth. But even they seem... [more]

I think I get it now. If you read between the lines of their "excuse", it becomes obvious that the "embarrassment" they were trying to avoid was their own. If they publicly disavowed Violet Blue, it wouldn't silence her, because people would just go straight from the disavowment, to Violet Blue's own site. But if they HAD gotten away with quietly disappearing her, she wouldn't get an on-the-way-out traffic spike.
Now, she gets the traffic spike,... [more]

It's funny. I usually read mefi in lynx, and only use a graphical/javascript-y browser to post comments, so I never realized the [del] stuff created the actual strike-through effect for you young hipsters with the modern technofied browsers.
I learned something today useful today, and of BB's willingness to work on that whole hole to china thing.

There's always tunebite, which skips the cd-burning and just digitizes directly from the 'analog hole'. At least one music-subscription service exec I've spoken to felt that transcoding tracks with it, didn't violate their EULA.

How to destroy 4,700 new cars?
These cars weren't just a danger to their potential owners, but to every car they encountered. If a steering rod fails due to corrosion, a tire blows out in heavy, high-speed traffic, a fuse panel shorts out, taking down the headlights...the possibilities of killing not just the driver, but other drivers are endless.

Let me through, I'm a nosy person
When the WTO riots first hit Seattle, I went out and bought a police scanner. During the height of the bad-stuff, it made for some very interesting listening (someday I have to find the mp3s I made that week), with police officers calling out for help, sounding more scared and overwhelmed than I can describe.
Afterwords, living in downtown, I'd hear lots of sirens, but often by the time I turned on the scanner, it'd be too late to hear about whatever aid vehicle I'd... [more]

BMW M5 Crashes, Kills 5
In high school, I had a friend who's parents were in the middle of a messy divorce. Dad bought my friend a porche 911, his mom bought him a VW golf. This being the 80's, there was zero chance his dad was getting custody, and of course mom wouldn't let him keep the 911 at her house, so he only got to drive it when he'd visit his dad twice a year. I didn't keep exact records, but it sure seemed like 9/10 times he drove the porche, he got arrested for driving like an idiot. He never got... [more]

Yeah, this is another nail in the coffin which is my despisement of last.fm's developers. They took a wonderfuly simple product, and have made it less and less useful with every change.
It used to scrobble internet radio tracks just fine, but they disabled that, because they want you to only use their radio system.

oh wait, nvm, it's mp3tunes.com that wrote the itunes crashing plugin, it was the refusing-to-scrobble tracks from a network drive bug that made me give up last.fm, and that was a windows media player plugin issue. d'oh.

It's certainly frustrating that 10 hours into the 'crisis' they still haven't sent out a single email about what's going on. I first saw the story on digg, then got a phone call from my bank's fraud department.
Annoying as that is, I just can't see giving up the 700+gb of storage I get thanks to being with them since forever. I've yet to see another host with anywhere near as liberal a drive-space policy.

I'm quite curious how they'll handle the secondary effects. I'm not bouncing any checks, but my banks fraud-auto-detector thingy is suspending my card. I wonder if they have some sort of insurance that will cover those people with secondary fallout, or if they'll have to pay it out of pocket, or just tell people 'thems the break for using a debit card instead of a proper credit card'.

I somewhat share unixrat's amazement...not that I'm saying people for whom $200 is a big deal aren't allowed to have websites, but from the perspective that someone for whom $200 is a big deal, doesn't seem like they should be using direct withdrawls from their account. It's right in the paperwork you 'sign', that errors could happen. I know when I've been in close-to-the-wire times, I didn't let anyone auto-debit something from me.

To all the people claiming the video must be fake because the radio recording is seperate, I have to wonder what kind of camcorders you people see, that have military radios built into them. Of course the two streams of data are seperate, they came from seperate recording devices. Overlaying the audio on top of the video would seem to be the more fake way to portray two distinct recordings.

Many Retirees May Lose Benefit From Employers
Why do people in this thread keep saying "on medicare alone?" Did you not RTFA? It says they can offer DIFFERENT benefits to the over-65, not NO benefits. You go from a plan that covers everytyhing, to a plan that covers everything medicare doesn't. Not saying I want to have any portion of my care be Medicare m'self, just saying you shouldn't misrepresent the situation just to score terror points.

A few weeks ago, I'm walking to lunch, past this one parking lot that is used partly by people going to the nearby park, and partly by people who work in the neighborhood. There's a truck almost completely blocking the entrance to the lot. There were lots of notes on the window, but none of them seemed to have noticed that the truck had been RAMMED into the log it was resting against, and abandoned days before, such that my assumption was it was stolen. Entrapping a Good Samaritan or Two
It can't be entrapment because the officers never spoke to the accused. Entrapment requires a bit more than just leaving valuables in public places. Not to say this sounds like it's being done well. As one judge pointed out, the law gives you 10 days to turn stuff in. More than anything, it just seems like a massive waste of money and time. I wonder how many actual muggings take place during these stings, where the officers sitting around watching a bag could have been walking the streets... [more]
