MeTa post: Jesus Christ, this is stupid.
In one of my favorite James Morrow books, Towing Jehovah the protagonists end up eating some of the body of God. Turns out it's made a mana, which to me means that during the exodus, the jews were eating holy dandruff.

MeTa post: Seattle meetup August 2008
The shepherd's pie at George and the Dragon is actually quite tasty.

My fave spot in the neighborhood is just across the bridge on the queen anne side, The Nickerson Street Saloon which has quite a few beers on tap, and makes a tasty burger amongst it's other fare. They've got a huge outdoor space, but they fill up quickly on a weekend night.

oddly enough, I've never seen lolcats, All Your Base, or many other internent memes everyone says are so universal, because they weren't posted to mefi. and I'm fine with that.

in my defense, the lolcats were posted at 7:46pm, and AYB at 8:47 pm, well outside of standard business surfing hours.

MeTa post: Why anon?
If I didn't think it wouldn't work out in practicallity, I'd wish for all answers in an anonymous thread to be anonymous too....if the question is embarrassing to ask, surely some of the best answers would be too?

Some answers, like say how to properly dispose of a body, seem a bit dangerous to have associated with your name.

MeTa post: Ugh, all RIGHT, mom, I get it.
I wonder how many people post after the "best answer" has been marked because they suspect any silliness now won't be noticed, since there aren't any serious answer-ers left in the thread to flag them.

MeTa post: Who the flickr is that?
Oddly enough, my curiosity was piqued because someone tracked down my flickr name, presumably out of one of my posts (it isn't in my profile out of meh-ness towards web2.0 interconnection maintaining, not a desire for privacy), and sent me a flickr mail instead of a mefi-mail.
posted to MetaTalk by nomisxid at 12:53 PM on March 24, 2008
d'ohyeah, could have been from there too.

still seemed odd to use flickr mail to contact me about a mefi post.
posted to MetaTalk by nomisxid at 1:31 PM on March 24, 2008
plutor, I was so expecting something more like this for my self-outing link.

On further reflection, I suspect I know exactly why someone would flickr-mail me instead of mefi-mail, namely that they think I wouldn't answer them if I knew we had 'issues' on the blue or something. Like I take online flame wars seriously =p

MeTa post: Rocking Homelessness?
1. It wasn't approved, flags may have been raised after the fact. Only anonymous questions have to be approved.
2. We've got a pretty long history of allowing the distateful to stay. It's only questions that create site-liability that are for-sure forbidden. Everything else is a grey mishmash of competing interests. There are several answers in that thread that would be useful to someone who has/is-going-to-be homeless by the 'normal' route. With the mortgage crisis looming, I'd... [more]

MeTa post: Fallout from the Givewell affair
LH, phil is a schumuck, and nowhere near as naive and innocent as you portray him. He does describe himself as part of the elite, so we do get to call him on that. He does deliberately engage in behavior AFTER his appology which contradicts the appology, so it's fair game to assume the appology was a lie. He is deliberately mischaracterizing the issue, if he's as online community-knowledgeable as you claim, which is just more proof of his bad faith-ness. Just because he just now paid his $5... [more]

MeTa post: Buying a WoW account is against Blizzard's TOS.
I dislike the question because he's asking us for help cheating other people, not just against a machine. It's not a "teach me how to cheat in vegas" question, it's a "teach me how to cheat my friends at friday night poker" question, and that just seems icky.
Utimately, I say we let the question stand, because his actions will reap their own reward. It'll be painfully obvious to anyone he plays with, that he didn't level up himself, and he will be socialized... [more]

Malor,
There are a couple of potential 'harms' I can see coming out of it. If he's a shmuck, he can take his high level char out and spend his time griefing people who're trying to level up their chars the honest way. Then there's the whole aspect of hyperinflation caused by people for whom wow-gold doesn't represent any time investment, in auction house competition with people who spent their time to earn their gold. Plus there's the fact that he's going to be giving money to... [more]

MeTa post: Make the Pledge
When I first moved to Portland, I spent a lot of time just hanging out in the park and drawing. One day, I'm sitting there, sketching people as they go past, and something yellow up high, catches my eye. I look and see, it's a sign in a tree, calling to me, saying don't litter. It made me laugh, the sign high up in the tree, the idea that someone who's going to throw their trash on the ground, will first look up in the sky. It seemed a singularly pointless sign. Until now.

MeTa post: Hysterics
Early this week, I saw a new mail notification "Flasher in the garage". It caught my eye, so I went to see what it said, and was saddly disappointed to find out it was just a story about some left on car lights.
Another mefite here could tell his side of the time he was over at my loft, and my female friend from KC flashed her nipple piercing at him. Exhibitionism is not a single-gender obsession.
posted to MetaTalk by nomisxid at 2:03 PM on November 15, 2007
However, the gendered space that men and women
occupy regarding their exhibitionism is quite different.

I wonder, klang, how much that space differs not out of desire to exhibit, on the female side, so much as fear that the consequences would be greater/more-immediate. My 4'11" mom, had she any exhibitionistic tendancies, would seem more practically limited in terms of times/places where she could feel 'safe' as a flasher. The 5'8 man probably... [more]

MeTa post: Mefi's own
A rocket does not have lift, the reason it flies is because the trust vector is parallel to
the direction of motion and antiparallel to drag and the gravity vector.
Wow, such ignorance.
Lift is just the name of the upward vector, regardless of it's source. A plane wing generates lift, a rocket motor generates lift, the hot air in a balloon generates lift. They all do so in different ways, but the upward vector is still called lift.
posted to MetaTalk by nomisxid at 9:55 AM on November 2, 2007
AB, you've only defined aerodynamic lift, the other two flight methods have a component of their flight equation indicating their upward vector. That vector is named lift. Selective quotation doesn't improve your grasp of basic physics.
posted to MetaTalk by nomisxid at 10:07 AM on November 2, 2007
edd, lift + thrust are still named vectors in rocket flight, they just happen to be parallel because there is no aerodynamic lift, only thrust-lift.
