MeFi post: Moniker La Winski
When my ex was pregnant with our daughter and people asked us what we wanted to name the baby, I'd say "Harpo if it's a boy and Medusa if it's a girl." It was a girl, and we named her Kira.

I had a friend in high school named Houston Jeremiah Rabbitt. Poor guy. Even his nickname, Jed, didn't save him from ridicule.

MeFi post: Quick, Henry, the Flit!
Well, thanks for the Danny Dunn mention... I read several of those as a kid. That led me to do some more poking around through Wikipedia, and I ended up at The Winston Science Fiction series. with that great Alex Schomburg endpaper art -- which is now my current computer desktop.

MeFi post: Dead Funnies
Yeah! Yeah, yeah! That's it! I've read the Tibetan Book of the Dead two or three times and this beautifully done piece of work rings true. Great job. Great link.

Fucking smoky light. Fucking demons. I hate those guys.

Come to think of it, I did a three-page comic version of the Book of the Dead myself, back in the 80's, using funny animals. Angels, demons, sex, rebirth -- not as coherent as this. It was published in Dr. Wirtham's Comics and Stories after seeing the light of day in the funny-animal comix apa Rowrbrazzle. I ought to scan the thing in, one of these days.

Vance, great as he is, y2karl, is by no means to be compared to Lem. The two are utterly dissimilar. Lem, Wolfe, Dick, and Disch do indeed go together -- but Vance? No no no. His use of language is second to none but he is not the trailblazer Lem was, or Wolfe is. And I suspect he would agree with that. I would put Chip Delany in there before Vance -- who was not New Wave in any case. (Not that Lem was.) Shit, I'd put Harlan Ellison in there before Vance.

*shrug* I don't think Vance belongs in that list of "trailblazers," is all I am saying, and I'll go with that. TDE and BOTNS have far-future settings -- so do lots of sf books. The tone and themes of TDE and Wolfe's work are nothing alike, for my money. Sure Wolfe owes something to Vance but then everyone who writes sf owes something to Wells. (Or Heinlein... or Asimov... or Clarke... or Hugo Gernsback. )

Dammit, I love Vance and have read... [more]

And even Dick was essentially just a pulp hack -- until he went bonkers, then he was off somewhere else.

Too much derail, I apologize.

MeFi post: Europa Film Treasures
dougzilla, I found this annoying too, but I found that if you pause the film for a while the whole thing will download into the buffer -- then you can play it without interruption. Takes some time, but worthwhile.

Nicely done stereo soundtracks, too, in the ones I saw.

MeFi post: George Carlin Dead at 71
Shit, piss, fuck, cunt, cocksucker, motherfucker, and tits.

One of the funniest Carlin routines I ever saw was also hands-down the simplest comedy routine anyone could possibly have devised. He walked out on stage and Just. Stood. There. He looked around, with a generally pissed-off and sardonic expression on his face. He. Just. Stood. There.

And somehow -- somehow -- he made it funny. It took a while but... [more]

Great!

I enjoyed the film while I was watching it, but it doesn't bear any scrutiny. Really, all the damn sequels added nothing to RAIDERS other than the fun of seeing Sean Connery in LAST CRUSADE. I don't care it I ever see CRYSTAL SKULL again, but I'll be happy to watch RAIDERS anytime.

Ferrets... I hate ferrets. A female roomate I had for a while owned a ferret. The little fucker could squeeze itself as flat as a piece of paper. It regularly crawled under my bedroom door -- that's right, under it -- and shit on my bed. Once it crawled up my pant leg while I was watching TV and I could not get it out. Plus they smell.

I hate ferrets. I would rather have Pinky the very... [more]

MeFi post: What I Really Want Is To Direct
I only watched the Tim Burton link, but I loved it. It's true that his Batman was a flawed masterpiece, and that the series reboot with Christian Bale is on the money -- but that shot of the Batmobile zooming through the autumn night is pure 100% Batman the way it ought to be. Fucking brilliant. I said so at the time and I say so again.

The Ladykillers... well, without Alec Guiness, of course, it wouldn't work. It is true, even his... [more]

MeFi post: Best review of worst book ever
I can't think, offhand, of anything worse than Brown's Angels and Demons, other than self-published or POD stuff. I didn't love The Da Vinci Code but at least I finished it. Angels and Demons just sat there, smelling.
posted to MetaFilter by Guy_Inamonkeysuit at 7:42 AM on June 16, 2008
There's also this piece of shit: The Pleistocene Redemption. (I had to review this, back in '99, and my review is linked to part way down this long, thoughtful dissection of a genuine train-wreck of a book. So I had to read it all, and it was a real effort!)
