I work for a small web development company. As we are growing, I have been tasked with looking at a few pieces of our business:
- Version Control (Currently we don’t do it. We’re starting to use Subversion at my recommendation)
- Development Environments (We don’t exactly have formalized dev/stage/production right now, more like just dev/production…)
- Hosting (How we host our different clients varies… too much… we need a good solution)
- Infrastructure (i.e. how we host our own email, how we back up our data)
I already have some thoughts and recommendations, but they’re based on my personal experiences, so I thought I’d see what other experiences are out there and find out what other people/companies are doing…

Note: This is volunteer work with revenue potential. You've heard this one before, but come to me for more details and I'll explain my idea to you and you may just agree with me that there's serious money to be made.
I'm a programmer. I could do this stuff myself. However, I work a full time job, and I'm also not spectacular with making things pretty, graphically.
I've put some time into developing the idea, but spent $0 because I have a mortgage to pay. I'm looking for someone else willing to dedicate some time to something that might just take off and be something amazing.
What I need:
A whiz-bang AJAX developer capable of making really great UI functionality that works in both IE and Mozilla. Safari would be great too. If you've seen things like iGoogle's drag and droppable components, NetVibes, etc, you know what I'm after.
What the project is:
See my MeFi profile for a glimpse. There's way more ideas behind it than just what's there, but that'll give you a general idea. In a nutshell, I want to give people the ability to tie all of their different internet presences into one place.
Compensation:
At the very worst, I could provide you with some perks such as space on my colocated webserver so you can host a site or two. It's a LAMP server and I'd be happy to install any fun toys (within reason) you want.
At the very best, the idea is executed well, takes off, and a company is formed. You're hired on as lead interface developer. You're given a significant share of any ad revenue taken in by the site.

Even worse, perhans I'm an odd person, but I'm going to feel terrible telling either of these companies "No" and it's stressing me out a lot. I hate disappointing people. This emotional aspect is making it really hard for me to just quit stressing and think clearly about which makes more sense.

openingbands.com - a source for local music
I've just made a whole bunch of feature updates and additions to openingbands, and am in the process of making more as I have decided to grow its geographic reach beyond Champaign-Urbana Illinois where it started. It's a resource for local/independent bands and has become prominent enough in its home to be partnering with newspapers, weeklies, as well as concert venues, etc. Feedback is requested - does it have the things that would make you want a [yourcity].openingbands.com? What does it need? What does your local music site have that wows you?
Some features are so new they're not too utilized, such as
pictures and mp3s attached to show listings, of which not many have been uploaded yet.
Not-so-obvious features: Bands can indicate they're in a band and receive access to edit their own info. Venue owners can indicate as such and be given access to edit their shows calendar at will. Fans can create buddylists, mark favorite bands and be notified of new shows, add shows to their calendar for email/SMS alerts, etc. Cool google-map-toy only works where there's shows listed.
Lastly: I'm about to develop an API to allow venues to take advantage of our (imho) huge and well constructed database to update their website listings and ours at the same time, ensuring we have as complete listings in other cities as we do in C-U. Email for details if you like.

I am having trouble finding a post to a cool web tool (java, maybe?) where you chose a parameter or some colors, then dragged your mouse around to make spline-y funky patterns. It seems it would have been especially useful to make cool mathy looking web backgrounds. I haven't the foggiest idea what search terms to even start with, and those I've tried have come up empty. Anyone know what I'm talking about?

Another wifi-related arrest
was publicized today. In the past, the only case readily available to researchers involved
additional seedy activities that are what really drew the arrest. The coffeeshop and other open hotspots show up on several sites such as
jiwire and
wifinder which are devoted to helping people find wireless hotspots.
In this case, a coffeeshop noticed someone leeching their WiFi parked in his truck -- over the course of 3 months, without ever entering the coffeehouse and making a purchase. While not yet convicted of anything, he has been arrested for "theft of services," and this could mean the first precedent set for whether or not "wireless piggybacking" is illegal. The case becomes especially interesting for both sides of the ethical debate on "borrowing" wireless. One one side of the judge's opinion will be the fact that the coffeehouse is a public place, not a private home. On the other side, it turns out the man who was arrested just so happens to be a registered sex offender, though this coincidental fact is not technically relevant to the case.

When is it OK to point out something that may be very important even if it does not directly address an AskMe?
This post is from a person who acknowledges "borrowing" a neighbor's open WiFi connection. I would like to know if MeTa thinks I was out of line in posting
this and
this. The resulting
response bothers me. I tried to be both helpful and understanding that she may be unaware of potential legal issues with "borrowing" wifi, and gave protective advice to her about being safe when she gets her own WiFi, too. Am I guilty of a derail, or is this kind of discourse acceptable on AskMe?

In
this AskMe, I am in agreement with the post that follows mine, as well as of course my own, though I didn't word it as bluntly as Rhomboid did, as I was sort of "typing as thinking". That said,
the first response seems vaguely spammy. Full disclosure: I provide web hosting myself, and I still think the response is borderline inappropriate.

Chameleon-Pony Request: Can I change my username on MeFi, or would it forever ruin the MeFi/google/other balance and you'd prefer I don't?
I really don't use this username like... anywhere anymore... I've been around MeFi for a few years now I think, and even back when I registered I was considering ditching this dumb nickname.
Aside from recent weeks where I've been AskMeFi crazy, I've been lurk-ish enough that I highly doubt anyone has any real association with my name (I'm not like ParisParamus, for example) so I don't think it would throw anyone off, really.

FeatureRequest: MeFi bookmarks. I would love, on AskMeFi and MeFi, to be able to click "bookmark this link", and then be able to go to a page that lists those links I have bookmarked. Ideally sortable by post date and last comment date, searchable by keyword, but the sort/search isn't totally necessary.
"Why not bookmark it in IE/Mozilla?" Well, call me picky but I really prefer to reserve browser bookmarks for main pages of sites I visit ALL the time (i.e. MeFi/AskMeFi). It'd be nice to have a local archive of the stuff I'm tracking and want to keep coming back to.

Ever since MeFi's search feature went away and it now lets you search google or yahoo, I'm having trouble finding past posts I'm looking for. Right now I'm looking for a post from within the last month or so where you could enter a URL into this website and it would give you a bunch of feedback on how good/bad it was, etc..
Will the search feature be coming back any time? Google/yahoo don't seem to order by date, and seem to mix in all sorts of stuff that clouds up my search. I loved being able to restrict my search to "within the last month", etc...

AskMeFi email notification?
I understand for threads that get a lot of replies - an email per response is way too much, and would be more of a hassle than it's worth.
What about a nightly cron job that notifies AskMeFi posters who have checked an "email me to let me know about new replies" box a notice that X number of replies have been posted to their thread? The box could be unchecked by default, of course.
I've found that sometimes, AskMeFi threads that are days old end up getting responses from bored folks who scroll through several pages, so I think this would be useful.
