MeTa post: commentiquette
Insulting people and their interests and ideas can make for some great reading. Unfortunately most of the hatin' here seems to boil down to "I don't like this!"

Take this post, for instance: it would be much improved with some links to particularly lame grousing and some mockery of how dull the haters are. Perhaps with some comparisons of their dullness with the supposed dullness of the post their dissing. And, if you want to be really ambitious, some sort of... [more]

I want to favorite 23skidoo's comment over and over.

I thought his comment was ironic because it was about how he fearlessly calls out posts that he thinks are boring, and yet the comment itself was basically devoid of content and, well, boring.

And that precisely places your commentary where by way of this didactic criterion of yours?

It's ensconced in the pantheon of greats.

Could we ad some kind of "super poke" function as well?

MeTa post: User comment dumps
Ooh, maybe also we could have the option of paying some sum to order a printout of all of our detritus to be shipped to us printed on fancy Metafilter stationary! Would that be feasible? Also, might it be possible to have a big container of hand lotion included in each order? Preferably the kind with the built-in pump.

(GAG ME WITH A SPOON in re: this horrible idea.)

MeTa post: We'll all need lobotomies to keep from shouting "Don't do it!"
It would be nice to see an answer from the mods on the question the poster is asking here.

MeTa post: This is ridiculous.
But it is how ever ridiculous. . . So if ridiculousness is going to be a guideline, I think we might want to start defining our terms here.

You might want to try a dictionary; it's actually pretty straightforward.

MeTa post: Civilized discussion?
Wow. Death by Ugabooga defends the institutionalized rape of children and you call out tkchrist for being too rude to him in his response. Amazing.
posted to MetaTalk by 1 at 10:14 PM on April 2, 2008
Btw, call me overly westernized or something, but I've long considered part of being "civilized" to be not condoning rape.

MeTa post: Guildmaster for Mefi's WoW Guild (Maelstrom, Alliance) Needed
Wait ... you're suggesting that it's optimal to play a first person shooter with a keyboard and a mouse instead of a joystick controller? I would have guessed the opposite.

Haha, Dave Faris is a million years old!

MeTa post: We have some cool people at MeFi
Of 35 people, many of them have different jobs. (The clear majority of them being well-paying jobs that require a college degree.) Were you expecting everyone to have the same well-paying, degree-requiring job or something? Oy vey.

A wiki could be a problem as there is currently no rule against going back and editing the rules, editing the results of past votes, editing peoples' turns, etc. I guess that's part of the game, though. . .

MeTa post: Metafilter comments vs. Youtube comments
(From the Metafilter half of that page): I'd have to agree with delmoi

I'll take YouTube. IMDB is really the gold-standard for message board in(s)anity, though.

Metafilter helped my learn why Ayn Rand is dumb.

I think this, by itself, can justify this site's entire existence.

Oh, and, yeah, on topic: Americans are totally America-centric and generally ignorant of the world around them. Surprise surprise. That explains this obnoxious phenomenon, as well as our foreign policy.

MeTa post: Mefimail -- the other, better metatalk
This is wicked retarded. Given that the view of the community seems to be that it's the worst thing ever to reveal the contents of private metamail (even if it came from the hated SCDB!), this seems like it will just lead to lots of obnoxious hate mail about which one can do nothing.

Also, I think we are all forgetting that the point of metatalk (unlike, apparently, AskMe), is to have fun. Please don't make the fun go away.

I used to hate the whole Obama thing, and now, due to that speech, I really like that guy. Fuck.

(Sorry, this comment isn't very meta.)

And THAT is how Kerry needed to respond to the Swiftboating bullshit. Too bad he didn't believe Americans might be smart enough to hear the truth.

MeTa post: It's hard to be a mod.
Oh for God's sake. If Jessamyn hadn't deleted those comments, those threads would have been more fun to read. The threads still would have been just as helpful to the poster (I'm sure the OP has no trouble following all of the comments in her or his own thread.)

The internet is not particularly serious business and most forum moderation just boils down to rearranging the deck chairs on the. . . fuck, I wish there were some commonly known Carnival cruise ship name I could... [more]

Oh, wow, I totally missed who this post was by. That certainly explains that familiar self-important tone. Go back to inventing Livejournal, Mark Kraft!!!!

Oh my god, you [moderator] for seriously deleted my link to a months old blog entry containing the totally public information of where Obama lives? It took about a minute of Googling to find and is probably public record. Good grief.

Oh, sorry. I was just making fun of the hyperbolic "I hold in my hands the life of Barack Obama!" tone of this silly-ass post.

Basically I got this from googling "obama rezko lot address." Presumably one can use Google Maps for the high rez pictures, but I didn't check.

MARC is by far the best way to get from BWI to DC. The bus/metro combo is the worst thing of one's life. BE WARNED the MARC doesn't run on weekends.

MeTa post: Queuing questions.
Most of the questions on AskMe come down to "I'm too lazy to research somethign myself!" or "help me make a totally subjective decision based on too little information!" Your posting history does not suggest that you are an exception.

Let's please send this little pony to the glue factory.

(our current guildmaster is somewhat immature; she's constantly promoting her alts to officers, and chastising us for using Guild gold; also, I have a little difficulty taking orders from someone still in high school)

I've written like five responses and deleted them all for being too mean. I will try to keep this friendly and constructive:

MeTa post: Live Preview Slowness
Wow, what a crappily worded "request." Welcome to MetaFilter.

I've never had this problem with live preview, but in general, whenever I type and look at the screen, I see whatever it is I'm typing. It's a feature.

Wow, what crappily punctuated snark.

MeTa post: 1 + 1 = 0
Does anyone else make that distinction?

Vis a vis orgasms (verb or noun) it is always spelled "come." The "cum" thing comes (har har) from poorly spelled pornography. Check a dictionary if you don't believe me.
