Who Owns The Music?
These are all film/video related and therefore possibly outside your area of interest, but:

There were extensive issues with clearances and licensing that repeatedly delayed VH1's Badfinger documentary, detailed by writer Dan Matovina. The documentary almost didn't happen, and I remember being particularly dismayed to learn this considering it was a documentary and therefore I would think a fair use case would be relatively strong. (Sure, it's commercial, but it's also... [more]

Should I send them the manuscript?
When I used to run a small record label, I set up a contract and made sure to have all my artists sign it, because I wanted it to be very clear to everyone what we had agreed to. I wouldn't immediately assume these folks are going to rip you off, but I personally would want very clear written agreements about what you're giving up and what you're getting, and what they're paying you/taking from whatever deals they land you.

It's great that they've been so helpful so far,... [more]

A musician needs rock n' roll high schoolin'
The companion book to a great 1995 PBS series is Rock and Roll - An Unruly History, by Robert Palmer (not that Robert Palmer, the other Robert Palmer). It's a shame the PBS series itself doesn't seem to be available - I thought it was terrific. But the book should give you some good background.

Also check out the MIT OpenCourseWare materials for Music Since 1960, which covers rock along with jazz and other forms.

Oh, man - I just discovered that the dean of rock criticism, Robert Christgau, has an extensive archive of his writings on his web site.

It's more about what's good and why than about history, but totally worth reading in your quest to know more about rock. (And there's coverage of everything from Chuck Berry to Magnetic Fields.)

There are a ton of his amazing capsule reviews, but take a look at the longer stuff, like Any Old Way You Choose It (a... [more]

Where do you go to escape?
If you're in the city, go to Land's End. Ocean Beach often has a lot of people, but the further you go along the little trail north, the fewer people you'll see - and there are some lovely views of the ocean.

You should be able to find a lot of possibilities at Bay Area Hiker. She specifically omits places that feel too full of hustle and bustle, and most hikes mention whether they're heavily used or not.... [more]

How to survive my internal candidacy with grace and poise?
Since your question is about how to deal with the frustration, here's my suggestion:

Make up explanations that make you feel better.

I find I sometimes assume the worst, or assume a negative reason, for something that's happening to me. If I can explain it to myself in a more positive light, it helps me not take it personally.

So, when you ask, "am I being overly sensitive when I feel that everything I do is being... [more]

Hollywood Sign Trademarked?
One small data point for you: a cease and desist from a lawyer, even one representing a client known to be extremely litigious, does not automatically result in a lawsuit. When I got a cease and desist [self-link, but relevant] over a purported trademark issue, I wrote back (nb, not what optovox recommends) and pointed out that my non-commercial site could not be infringing Scientology's trademark. The lawyer wrote me once more, but that communication seemed more intended to take up my time and... [more]

My little aside in my post was simply pointing out that when I did reply to the C&D I got, six years ago, that action was contrary to the possibly excellent advice optovox gave you. YMMV. Career change dilemma
Riffing a bit on what others have said - can you find a really good job elsewhere? If you have background and skills in radio, are there other stations in your area where you can get reasonable pay and appreciation for your existing skills, whether full-time or part-time?

As others have said, a better job may help you figure out your other priorities. If you can go work for a competitor, even for a year or two, it could make a big difference in your paycheck, your stress... [more]

Cheap and portable signs for a protest?
I strongly recommend printing out your slogans on plain paper, scaled up to fit your sign. They're much, much more readable from a distance. (Check out my signs for example. [self link; scroll down] )

I was able to do this incredibly easily on my Mac using Appleworks. It should be pretty simple using whatever layout program you have handy.

Darn, hit Post too quickly -

After printing them out on plain printer paper, attach them to your sign using clear plastic tape. Staples are okay, but tend to come out before long. If you plan to picket a lot, you can put together a nice plastic pouch that goes over your posterboard and is big enough for your printed slogans.

Is this a good idea for a counter-offer?
I've worked at places where they wouldn't give you a 10% raise no matter what you did - they had hard and fast rules about raise percentages, and there was no getting around them, even for superstars. How do I price my used books accurately?
I wonder if it would be possible to find a local bookseller or two whom you trust and who appreciates your charity and ask them to come in once a week and just eyeball your books for an hour, pulling out the ones that should fetch more than your flat price? It would probably work best as a volunteer effort, but you might consider letting the dealer take a book or two as a token thank-you. I've lived in San Francisco for 20 years. While there are a few spots that make me a little wary, I've found that most parts of the city feel perfectly safe to me.

The advice you've gotten sounds good. The section of Market you mention can be a little worrisome, as is the same section of Mission (one block south). Not precisely what you describe, but Sue Hubbell's A Country Year and A Book of Bees are wonderfully written, and I love her observations of nature.

Just to be contrary, I do recommend Drupal for this, since you say you like poking around in the guts of things and part of your reason for doing this is to learn a CMS. I agree with the others that it's more than you need for creating the blog you describe, but if you want to develop some CMS skillz while you're blogging, Drupal's about as flexible and tweakable as it gets.
