Ask post: Killing Time in Melbourne.
Friday - Brunswick Street in Fitzroy, then grab a cab back to the theatre.
Saturday - get up early and go and have breakfast in St Kilda on Acland Street. Enjoy the coffee you lucky lucky people.

1) The Espy is near the beach - you could head down there. Or simply take a walk along the boulevard to Acland street (where the cakes are). The walk will take you past the Palais Theatre (abt 5-10 minutes by foot), then you could stroll down to the end of Acland street (past the cake shops) and catch your tram back to the city from there. That would kill your half hour.

2) Bourke Street Mall is not a good place for breakfast. Try Little Collins Street (runs parallel to... [more]

Ask post: How should I spend my summer in Japan?
I don't know why it has to be something crazy but...

You could always do the 88 temple pilgrimage on Shikoku. An acquaintance of mine did it and said he had a wonderful time - people he met on his path were very supportive and overall the entire experience was great. Not sure how that fits with getting a small boat to Okinawa (last I heard you could get a ferry, but as for finding a fisherman that would go from Kyushu to Okinawa, hmm), but maybe you're trying to go for... Ask post: Getting fired on Monday, how should I handle it?
Handle it as maturely as possible. If he fires you, you just say O.K., and ask for your unpaid salary to be paid out to you, and some time to get your stuff out of your desk (if you have any). Taking the opportunity to give him a piece of your mind might seem tempting but really will just degenerate into a slanging match. Leave as quickly as possible, comforted by the knowledge that your life has taken a distinct turn for the better. Enjoy the rest of the day.

Oh yeah, and on your next job, don't give work your personal cell number.

Ask post: Where can I stretch $20k the furthest?
China is cheap and China is huge. Do it.

Ask post: Where to buy a suit that's comfortable when it's warm, in London or San Francisco?
Get one made! Raja Daswani - famed tailor from Hong Kong now services US, UK, Australia, and some other places. According to the FAQ - "Suits range from US $350 to US$5,000, also depending on the material." So your price range fits in there.

Anyway, it's an idea - have a look for yourself. The reason I suggested it is Raja Daswani is based in Hong Kong, which is a pretty hot and muggy place most of the year, so he'd have a fair bit of... [more]

Ask post: What's the tattoo/symbol in DJ Shadow's _Six Days_?
426 - well it could signify that she's a "fighter". Reading about triads in Wikipedia I see that 426 is used to denote a fighter. That would make sense given the lyrics in the song.

Ask post: Tales of the (Asian) City?
John Burdett's books stacked up pretty well for me when I went to Bangkok a couple of times this year. So yes, definitely read them. I would also like to recommend The Harmony Silk Factory by Tash Aw, which has a great depiction of Ipoh in Malaysia (albeit set around 1940-60) - the great thing is Ipoh is relatively untouched by development compared to much of SEAsia, so you can go there and get a great feeling for what you've been reading. Also the hawker food is excellent. Another... [more]

I finally got the chance to visit the Foreign Correspondents' Club in Hong Kong (where some of the action from The Honourable Schoolboy takes place), but to my dismay it's in a different place to where it used to be located, and for some odd reason the Club makes mention of the book by means of a plaque over the men's urinal.

Oh yes, and I second the Cliff Hardy novels suggestion for Sydney. Haven't really found a good analogue for Melbourne. Interesting how crime novels are featuring in this short list - I guess in crime novels the city the crime is set in is one of main characters.

I think one of Nury Vittachi's Feng Shui Detective series is set in Singapore and one in Hong Kong. Pretty light entertainment but you might find something good about them.

Ask post: Recommend me a man bag.
You could try Crumpler. The website is a bit annoying to use but according to the Store Finder they have a number of outlets in New Zealand too, so hopefully you could go and have a look at them and make sure they are what you're looking for and within your budget. I have one and I love it.

Ask post: Is there a cable that connects audio output (DVR) to audio input (MacBook)?
Yes you could - you'll need the 3.5mm jack on each end of the cable, which you should be able to get from any Radio Shack-type shop. One of these should be fine.

Not sure how good the sound quality will be though - it will all depend on how good the sound card in your Mac is. You might find that the recording is a bit distorted.

Ask post: Recommend me a data modeling tool
Quest make Toad, which is a very good database tool (I used to use the Oracle version). They have a data modelling product as well.

Ask post: What can you tell me about Cairns?
I definitely recommend going up to Cape Tribulation. It's beautiful. See if you can organise a walk through the Daintree Rainforest with a guide - it's a much better experience because they tell you all about the eco-system you're wandering through. Also they can remind you not to go in the rivers - at one point on our tour we were standing by a river and our guide (a German biologist) laconically remarked "if you tried to swim across you'd be lucky to get halfway". Which then leads... [more]
