Please help me rescue my ginkgo tree
If there's a really good nursery in the area, it might not hurt to bring it in for a look.
My now-thriving little ginkgo started as a ~12" pencil-thick stick that had been rooted and then sat outside in a jar of water for A YEAR before I found it and stuck it back in dirt. Perhaps try to re-root the top bit with hormone, and also baby the stump? You might wind up with two plants!
(And be patient with the stump... plants I was sure were... [more]

Class consciousness
I would say the thing that's helped me most has been to cultivate very good manners and use them with nearly everyone, so that they become a firm habit. Ditto for phone manners!

Costco or Sam's Club?
Nth-ing Costco. They've really bent over backwards to keep us happy customers over the years.

What did I hear in the woods?
Our old neighbors' wolf-dog cross used to make some hair-raising, human-sounding noises. Ditto for raccoons as well as a bunny that got stuck in the fence (freed without incident.)

Teeth!
In my case, the dentist just had a puzzle-piece of tooth made and glued it into place. It's ten years old and holding.
If it becomes sensitive, plain old dental wax will help. But when you do see the dentist, be sure to ask if it looks like you need a night guard for tooth-grinding -- you don't want to find this out the hard way, trust me!

Should I have looked at my dead son?
I'm so sorry for what you've gone through.
Seeing my father was mostly surreal. He was just so obviously not in there, if that makes sense. It was a gory death, so sometimes the image still pops into my mind unbidden. Looking back, I realize it didn't make anything easier, but I also can't definitively say I wish I'd made a different decision.
Be sure to take care of yourself!

Why hasn't our dog gotten better?
Our dog also had the scary-looking bloody stools from worms, which couldn't be identified until he passed one (it looked much like a partially-digested blade grass) and we ran it in to the vet. Crossing my fingers for your pooch!

Blooming indoor plants
I've been getting regular blooms all winter from Abutilons and Streptocarpus, which are both fairly hardy and do all right with low/medium light.

Needed: speakers that are immune to GSM buzz
I notice no interference on a set of Harman Kardon Soundsticks II. With a little diligence, I managed to get mine on eBay for under $50.

Oh no, my mistake -- my husband says he has had those speakers pick up some kind of interference, although I've not heard it myself. Sorry for the false lead!

A new use for old snoes
Someone in our neighborhood has had Hen & Chick plants growing in a pair for years now.

Hot spot -- the dog kind, not the T Mobile kind.
We have good luck using spray Bactine to keep itchy dogs comfortable. Our vet didn't seem too worried about them bothering with it, not that they cared for the smell and taste anyhow.
(Incidentally, hot spots in that area turned out to be flea allergies in our case. The dog was flea-treated, but got the odd bite anyway.)

Is this a bad time to begin Citalopram?
I don't know about the drug specifically, but I found this bit about hair shedding very useful when I went off birth control and started shedding alarming quantities of hair. Turned out to actually be new growth pushing it out! (The new hairs are 1"-2" long now, though, an effect not unlike a baby bird with a mullet.)

Overweight Beagle
The rescue I'm involved with gets pudgy dogs quite often, and one of the first things they do is start cutting their normal food with vegetables (frozen green beans seem to go over particularly well, cooked in weak chicken bouillon for the pickier pooches.) In fact, my mom just had great luck getting her newly-adopted dog back down to optimal weight via the green bean method. And yes, longer walks will also help immensely!
