MeTa post: How Not To Sell Out
It doesn't take any particular skill to build a successful online venture, it just takes lots of energy -- which I have tons of thanks to Red Bullâ„¢!!! How about we all discuss our favorite Red Bullâ„¢-themed memories or recipes?

MeTa post: Suddenly Nicky
Odd, just the other day I was wondering about you for no apparent reason. THERE WERE SIGNS OF YOUR RETURNING WRIT ON THE ATMOSPHERE. Or something.

So glad you're back!

MeTa post: Revisiting Favorites - RSS Pony Request
This way you can actually leave the house and be notified whenever someone notices you via whatever clickamoid gadget you employ. You no longer have to stay indoors all night refreshing the page. Can no one see the incredible value in this??

MeTa post: Haha! Let's make things worse.
I'm glad you posted this. I thought the question was a senseless and pointless use of AskMe, and worded with either carelessness or deliberate provocation.

I'll be really excited to see this revisited in a few years when Europeans are posting to AskMe looking for dollar-bill toilet paper to buy as a gag gift. I bet the American contingent on the site gets super huffy THEN...

I really don't get all the sneering in here. Whether or not you agree with allkindsoftime, what is so objectionable about someone expressing strong principles about a little-known (to you) problem that may indicate a greater moral quandary? Smacks of lazy internet intellectuals too hasty to envision a high-horse under anyone who disrupts their lulz.

I will personally perform 45 minutes of quality oral sex on the first Mefite to take down Kim Jong-il.

Until you post a gender to your profile, I don't think you'll get many takers.

Then again, perhaps most MeFites are at least liberal enough to respect that ultimately, a mouth's a mouth.

MeTa post: I predict the answer will be neigh...
As Jofus said, getting marked best answer doesn't mean you're right, it just means you're "right." Is it really useful to know how often someone is "right"? Do you really want to judge someone based on the appearance of correctness, rather than the genuinely sound advice they give? What value does that have beyond warm fuzzies-- and even then, wouldn't they be merely "warm"?

Remember Joe Horn? Well, those of you who said Joe Horn would walk, it turns out you were right.

I was sure this was about someone recovering from paralysis or amputation or something.

The pictures show Colombian people who don't appear to be necessarily of African descent. They are surely dark brown people, and I'm sure that's all that mattered to Joe Horn.

MeTa post: Kenya hack it?
You are not "hacking" sex by figuring out how to do it well. You are just having sex the way it's meant to be had.

It would count as a hack if, say, we used sex for purely reproductive purposes, and you wanted to repurpose the act to get/give insane physical pleasure out of it. But striving for a basic level of competence in an area that is considered well-traveled and common does not make you hacker. It makes you a remedial student.

MeTa post: How to recall conversations with other users
If you don't breathe a long contented sigh when the MeTa calendar ticks over a day without a post, you're missing out on one of the minor - but very satisfying - joys of the MetaFilter experience.

I don't know about that, there have been weeks at a time when MeTa is the only part of the site I can bring myself to read.

MeTa post: AskMe is NOT an adoption service.
If it's not that bad, then surely she should just write that comment on a big posterboard and go stand outside a clinic. I'm sure no one will be riled.

I really wholeheartedly disagree that this is not a vulgar and inflammatory comment.

Abortion is a difficult issue to discuss anywhere, but especially on MetaFilter. Konolia knows this, and I was actually impressed at her restraint in the Roe vs. Wade thread (though I haven't checked it in a couple hours).

Offering such a far-fetched and unhelpful response to a thread on a very delicate matter-- in which the poster clearly has made up her mind... [more]

Job done. So unless we want to turn this into a Konoliafest, mayhaps the mods can close the thread.

I'd like her have the option of apologizing here to anonymous, since she can't via mefimail. If she feels like it. So naturally, I vote for open.

MeTa post: I am a commenter, but not your commenter
Hey, I asked about this before, and the concensus seemed to be that for a few actual professionals it was legally important to make things crystal clear, and that everyone else who uses those disclaimers "to protect themselves" is doing so completely warrantlessly.

Though sometimes the disclaimer is useful for the POSTER'S benefit, so that they know that your medical advice is likely to be total hearsay.
posted to MetaTalk by [NOT HERMITOSIS-IST] at 7:22 AM on June 4, 2008
Oh, and by "concensus" I mean, once all the shouting died down and people stopped telling me how stupid I was for not getting why it was so important, these were the only real facts left floating on the water.

MeTa post: Asked for X, got Y (where X equals help and Y equals grief)
Sometimes supplemental advice is helpful-- but when a poster clearly outlines what kind of help they need, if you can't give it to them then you should just move on.

AskMe is sometimes Offbeat-OpinionMe, but shouldn't always be.

But is there really no situation in which a "perhaps you should shift your perspective" response is appropriate?

Of course there are. For example, to the question, "Is it hard to set a broken finger at home? How do I do it?" it is perfectly appropriate to say, "GO TO A DOCTOR."

In human-relations-esque questions, "shift of perspective" answers are often really helpful, because it is... [more]

kmennie, as a recipient of almost exclusively shoddy toys in my youth, I totally feel your pain.

This lady and this dude were having a big screaming fight in front of their two small children that went on for about ten minutes, and then she hauled off and punched him. Me and thankyoujohnnyfever got in the middle (I got my shoe-lace stepped on and a toy thrown at my by the enraged womanoceros) and stopped her attack, telling them both that they needed to take a walk in opposite directions and blow off some steam. Which was tricky, because that lady was really booking it trying to circle... [more]

So here's the deal. The night before the meetup, I had a dream that I was turned into a moose, and suddenly hunters appeared in the woods and I had to run for my life. They shot at me as I struggled to cross a frozen stream (it's really hard to run as a moose if you've never done it before) and finally I escaped-- by hiding in Gladys Knight's basement.

Upon waking, I learned from the internet that the moose is a valuable shamanic totem: "Moose calves are born with... [more]

MeTa post: Just a curious question
I had a dream this morning in which I took a sabbatical to visit the MetaFilter Headquarters (which was really just Matt's house). On the day I arrived, there had been a cybercrime at a nearby museum in which LED throwies had been secretly positioned to change the museum's facade into a giant Lite-Brite image of forks twirling spaghetti into bites. The mods had been asked to report to the scene of the crime to help crack the case. Matt was leaving for the museum when I arrived at HQ, and I... [more]

This is just one of those things that is not going to satisfy everyone.

I suggest everyone give it a week or three the way it is, and then calibrate how much you care. If you still care very very much then you need more homework or something.

MeTa post: Scrump Goes For Broke
I sort of disagree. I think that under the steady guidance of the mods, MeFi has proven to be capable of going through phases that would tank lesser sites. Die-offs and fluctuations in ph are just MetaFilter's way of cleaning and regulating itself.
