Ask post: Please help with an impromptu Nova Scotia/PEI trip
to answer 2-

-a major newbie mistake is not to properly check the ground before pitching your tent. If you don't, you will probably get stuck with a lovely tree root or a stone right where your head wants to be. Not fun!

-things which must be brought: definitely bug repellant. It is your friend! and tons of sunscreen. A good sleeping bag is a must, and they last forever if you put the money into one (mine has lasted me for 14 years now, and I... [more]

Ask post: Recommend me some Australian and Canadian comedy!
dang, Razzle Bathbone got there before me.

This Hour is really good, although Rick Mercer made it really good (he left the show to pursue his solo effort the Monday Report)

Canada also has some incredibly good stand up comedy shows, if you're interested, such as Just for Laughs (from Montreal), and the Halifax Comedy Festival (collections of clips from many stages in Halifax during... [more]

Ask post: Is there anything I haven't seen in this neck of the woods?
I can't believe people are recommending Goderich! (I was born there!!!) But I absolutely second it. It's a lovely small town, and not too far from this great valley type thing with a wooden bridge across it. On the bridge are names of people who sponsored it, and my name's on there somewhere... not that that particularly matters, but it's a lovely spot to just walk around and see natury-things.

What about Kingston? It's very touristy, but also quite pretty (also, mefi me... [more]

how about marshmallows and black licorice, either mini marshmallows with little black nibs or something, or melt the marshmallows over top. Actually, come to think of it, this actually sounds strangely delicious, and now I want some! (but can't have them due to the late hour.. *sigh*)

Ask post: Have you ever seen a basement with a roof and no house?
There's a man near where my parents live whose house burned down not that long ago. He didn't have insurance and had very little money to begin with, so now he's living in his basement with a very shaky structure and tarping serving as a roof overtop. That's the first time I've seen a basement as a house, and it's definitely not a construction "style" in this case, but a matter of emergency.

The town (which is very small) had a fundraiser to try and help him... [more]

Ask post: Workplace or professional rituals
My job is rather special, in that we're a group of students who get dressed in military uniform circa 1867 and march around and do drill/artillery/music performances to match the era. As you might guess, we have LOTS of traditions, including:

-rain dances when it's about to rain
-a certain object which is "stolen" by the drill squad periodically
-wild parties every wednesday (and monday, and most saturdays, and some thursdays)... [more]

Ask post: Thank-you gift for a performer and opera-lover?
Seconding opera glasses. They're classy.

As an opera lover myself, I would actually appreciate dvds of live operas. They're expensive enough (usually around 40$ for a 3 hour opera) to make it a good present.

Otherwise, tickets are good, OR the IOU of a ticket for when he travels to a city which has a really good opera company.

Ask post: How to be comfortable?
I didn't really read through the other anecdotes (heh..., sorry). I just wanted to say that the way I finally ended up feeling comfortable with myself was by no longer caring what other people think of me, but not in an arrogant way. So basically, if I feel like going and playing on a play structure (I'm approaching 20 and still have a tendency to do this), then I will, and I don't give a shit if other people think I'm weird because of it. However, I do mind if people think I'm mean or something,... [more]

to all who recommended Gold Bond: I'm definitely going to try that, thanks!

To mendel: definitely not possible to alter the uniform (note the historical accuracy part, and the pants alone cost 400$ each!!!! I'd have issues explaining that to the Quarter master)

Ask post: Things to do in Rostock when you're heavy
the wikipedia article gives lots of nice information (I didn't read through it all, sorry, but it does seem lengthy!)

Also, it seems like Berlin would be within a fairly easy day trip distance... Berlin is far and beyond my favourite city in the world as of yet, and would be well worth the visit (although you might end up wanting to stay there for longer than one day!)

nthing leftovers.

I spent last summer eating frozen meals, then discovered to my great surprise that one frozen meal didn't even fill up my little thermos!!!! which would explain why I felt hungry most of last summer (very physically exerting job)

Anyways, I'm currently living very well off 50$ canadian per week for food, for one very hungry and active young woman. My typical lunch is something either in tupperware or heated in a thermos, usually... [more]

Ask post: Obtaining a bike in Trento
maybe try classified adds? Or, alternatively, if you friend has facebook (or something similar), tell them to put a request into the area's marketplace. There's probably someone there who wants to sell a bike.

I know this isn't the most helpful, since I don't know exactly where to get one, but bikes are really popular in Europe, so I have no doubt that you friend would be able to find one very easily at a very decent (read: low) price.

Is this the kind of surgery that requires a bowel movement to be released? If so, I suggest dates. Got my step-dad out of the hospital nice and quickly after double-hip surgery.

Otherwise, a good book, favourite food (cookies? jelly beans?), maybe a mini DVD player and some good movies? (this last one is expensive, I know, but if you have one lying around it might be useful)

Ask post: Austrian villages
Fuschl am See (not sure about the spelling) is a tiny town outside Salzburg... it's not the most exciting of towns, but it's very pretty and very typical-Austrian. And it has really pretty mountains surrounding it (sadly I don't have any pictures on this computer).

When I was there, it was march (break) and everything was pretty closed down, but by the looks of the town it's quite possible that it becomes more popular over the summer.

Be careful with using the Eurorail pass because you will may have to pay a reservation fee for some travels (Eurorail passes are never purchased by Europeans, mainly for this reason....)

Getting mad at your doctor is not the answer here. You might have convinced yourself that you have ADD (medical/psychology student's syndrom), when you actually ARE suffering from stress.

IANAD, but if you're really so dead set on having ADD, I suggest getting a second oppinion. Don't just ditch your doctor for incompetence, but you can easily get a diagnosis from a specialist. However, as far as I know (in Psychology at least), you should have been suffering from this... [more]

If she turned 40 lbs of fat into 40lbs of muscle, she wouldn't weigh more, she'd look the same but disturbingly thinner and full of toned muscles. As far as I'm concerned, if your friend was happy with her body before, then the trainer was totally out of place in telling her to work out. There's healthy and then there's rediculous. Also, women need a certain body fat percentage to actually MENSTRUATE, so this could do far more damage than good (although IANAD and I don't know your friend's body... [more]

Sober people do everything the same as non-sober people do... just, you know, sober. I worked at an AVEDA spa for a year, and the pampering I got as a result of free eye brow waxing and being able to take home products over night (not to mention ordering stuff on the way cheap) was well worth the hell I got while working there. These IKEA frames have been around for AGES (I used to paint them when I was 10). They're plain, they're cheap, they come in many different sizes (although the site lists them in cm, I'm sure it would be easy enough to transfer... My photos have always fit in them), and you can stain them or paint them in any colours you want.

You should probably go see your doctor, because it might be something very easy to fix medically, such as an allergy, or a vitamin deficiency. On top of the B vitamins, or instead of, you might have an iron deficiency. I know when I don't take my iron tablets every day for a few days I start being groggy when I wake up, even when I've had hours of great sleep.

not a new yorker, but a canadian like yourself. The main thing that I found was to j-walk... all the time.. unless in immediate danger of being hit by a car. It was obvious who the tourists were because they WEREN'T j-walking, so that helped me a lot.

As a side not, and as a Canadian, go see the Virgin records store in Time Square. The classical music section alone is larger than the small-to-medium sized HMVs. It's impressive.
