The point about having spiritual pain, and looking for a physical way to cure it, really resonated with me. When you aren't thinking clearly, because you are in emotional and spiritual pain, you just want it to stop.
If you're given time to find another way out, you can make it stop, but without killing yourself. It makes sense to me.

It may not be fantastic for the environment, Tehanu, but significantly fewer trips by truck, saving fuel and carbon emissions, and the huge water savings (60-70%) since they no longer have to wash down the shipping crates is actually a gain for the environment over the old methods. I saw this as part of a friendly group movie-going experience. I kinda liked The Village. I mean, it wasn't great, but it was entertaining. I figured this would be similar.

Anyone know how much steamer passage to Europe costs these days? Because boat travel is looking more and more welcoming every day. And I love to fly.

I'd love for MeFites from Canada, the UK, Germany, etc., to come in here and defend these laws and others that ban certain forms of speech.

If I need just a little bit of a spice or herb, I get some at the bulk food store. I don't buy full jars or tins or bags of dried herbs or spices, unless I use it all the time. And if I'm going to need, say, buttermilk, I'll get the smallest container I have and/or plan on recipies to use it all up.

I'm not a fan of recipies that require equipment I don't have. Even if I could afford it, I don't have space for every little gadget. I like multi-taskers, and I want to use... [more]

One of my friends fosters kittens on occasion - or she did before she got a kid(den) of her own and no longer had the time fostering demands. There was the Shakespearean litter, the Nuts, the Great Gatsby Gang, the Flowers, and several others. She was usually lukcy enough to get the mom along with the kittens. Such tiny, tiny kittens. I am happy Mr. Obama won, or at least will win, or however it works. Its a good sign for the future.

On the other hand, I remain extremely skeptical that this means change for the better. The last few years have really done a number on my ability to trust in politicians and the political process. Even up here in the land of milk & honey (aka free healthcare).

I hope Mr. Obama is who you need him to be.

This hurts me. I'm not a citizen of the United States, but it hurts me, just as if my real life neighbour was imprisoning people in their basement. The US wants to be moral and right and good, or at least they want to believe it. But then their government goes and does things like this. Things that are rightly condemned.

I hope Obama is the the guy you all want him to be. Because this needs to change.

Its a good thing I only take pictures of unimportant things. Like fungus and tree bark and tea bags. So far those aren't considered terrorist targets, so its allowed. I think. These new rules that aren't rules are so confusing.

Oh, and I realize being mistaken for a child molester when taking photos of tree blossoms isn't the same as being mistaken for a terrorist while taken a photo of a majestic bridge or historical building, but the idea that "photographers are up to something, and it must be illegal", that just puzzles the hell out of me.

I love the mouth of the giant sky-cat turning into another tunnel. At least that's what it looks like to me.

Reminds me in some ways of these old comics my mom had, maybe they were her father's. The subject matter was totally different (brat children stealing chickens and other 'hijinks' that resulted, I believe, in their very messy death), but the action was almost totally silent. It horrified me, but I loved it.

This doesn't horrify me at all, and I still love it.

If I wanted to dye my mid-shoulder length curly dark brown hair with Kool-aide, how many packets do I need, and what flavour should I try? Ah, never mind. Industrial strength hairdresser dyes don't work, why should drink mix?

I am always on the lookout for new sites on fables and folktales.
I use Folktexts a great deal, which divides folktales by subject matter. It also has an extensive Germanic folktale section.
I'm happy to add Rick Walton's site to my bookmarks, though. This is fantastic.

I love going barefoot around the house, even in the dead of winter. I have been known to drive barefoot before, in the summer. Its an interesting feeling. After reading that article, I now feel compelled to build up my callouses again and walk outside barefoot as much as possible. Bare feet in grass is heaven.

Alas, I must wear shoes at work. They frown on bare feet. Also, some non-work situations do seem to require shoes, cold & snow being one of the biggest. And shopping.

What interests me about this scheme is that in high school, kids are paid to go to school, study, or whatever. But at the same time, student loans for education are being cut off, the interest rates are rising, and those who may have been able to get a loan - and go to college - are no longer considered 'acceptable risk'.

Most of the time I go through life on mostly autopilot. Get up, go to work, spend some time with friends, do the whole thing over the next day. I don't think about the forces that keep me employed and eating frozen dinners, where I take the assumption of personal safety as a given and feel the right to be angry when its taken away.

What a timely post. I just went to the Elmira Maple Syrup Festival on Saturday, and got myself a stockpile of maple syrup, and indulged in maple taffy apples and maple sugar candies and maple taffy cones and maple syrup drenched apple fritters and lo, it was good.

As an aside, my 92 year old grandfather has had maple syrup almost every single day of his life. I sometimes wonder if that has something to do with his longevity...

Clearly, the only way to deal with the menace of children is to lock them into individual cages, heads strapped so they can only face one way. This will eliminate all forms of touching and eye contact which may be construed as inappropriate by someone, somewhere, at some time.

This made me giggle so hard. On the weekend, one game I played had a troll in it, a troll with a taste for human flesh. And a goblin who enjoyed eating cows. A merging of the two was suggested.

This is why renting is better for me: I can afford it. I can not afford a house. I had a house. I could not keep up with the mortgage, utilities, property tax, maintenance costs, etc. on just my salary. So I sold my half to my ex, and moved out. If I'd stayed, I would be so far in debt I would not be able to see sunshine. And I would have probably lost the house any way.

I would so love to stand right up next to the glass, and look out. I'd get that swoopy "I'm going to fall" sensation right in the pit of my stomach, and it would pass, and I would be rewarded with an awesome view.

(I am the sort who hangs over the edge of every rail that keeps me from falling over the edge of a cliff, bridge, canyon, building, etc.)
