These Palin threads are so long they need cheat sheets. So:

Katie Couric is a chess-savant leopard, Mister_A is Al Gore, and Sarah Palin is no Lara Roslyn.

Dnab: I sometimes wonder if the lack of intergeneratioonal contact you're talking about isn't the result of a literal 'missing generation' of 'mos thanks to AIDS and the disastrous handling of it.

Gays of a certain age scoff when I say this, but one of the best ways to get a young guy interested in gay history is Felice Picano's Like People In History, which despite being an unabashed beach read touches on most of the major points with some grace and power. And evil lesbians.

The messed up thing is that a sixteen year old gymnast in the Olympics is probably already over the hill, and can remember being better. What's THAT like?

Speaking as a professional ballet dancer who probably peaked at 20 and retired at 23, it fucking sucks.

Speaking of damage, if you're dating a ballerina don't look at her feet unless you absolutely have to EVER.

Fixed that for you. Lovecraft obviously took a lot of inspiration from ballet feet. The horror!

pretty soon, movies will all be like Waking Life -- except they won't look like animated cartoons. Actors will be totally disposable, and movies will just need Pixar-rendering farms for directors to do their editing. I'm looking forward to the first "uncanny valley" feature-length film.

Too late.

I narrowly missed seeing a dancer snap his Achilles tendon onstage last year...thanks to the wonderful acoustics, the snap was apparently not just clearly audible to all, but actually loud, over the full orchestra in the 2000-seat auditorium.

He's fully recovered now, but that's a show I'm glad I skipped.

Ask post: Why
Some patients with HIV/AIDS or other autoimmune disorders die due to Pneumocystis Pneumonia (PCP)

For quite a while in the eighties and early nineties, pneumonia as a cause of death was a sign that someone closeted had died of AIDS. That practice seems to be less frequent now.

Not meaning to imply anything with regards to Mr. Mac, just expanding on ericb's comment.

I didn't get a chance to say it in the Zack Snyder thread so since HuronBob mentioned it:

MeFi post: Customize your disease and wipe out the population
This needs, needs, needs to be multiplayer.

One person is the world. The other is the disease.

Or it could be asymmetrical: one person is the world, and several diseases are competing...

Seems the symptomless spread is the way to go...and visualizing several million people a day (albeit no Madagascarians or Japanese) dropping dead from sudden, unexpected heart failure is so awfully satisfying.

Gus Van Sant and Larry Clark have the second match, for the film rights.

If it's true that most working Americans eventually have kids, I really don't see why it's necessary to screw over the handful of us who don't.

MeFi post: Capturing Fireworks
I didn't have the right camera on Canada Day, but having recently played with CHDK and a Canon S2 IS, it seems like it would work nicely. You can use scripts that auto-trigger the shutter based on light levels; some people have gotten that working fast enough to catch lightning strikes, so I'm sure it would work for fireworks.

Armitage, it's a complex mix; this week is Toronto Pride, and one look at the crowd will reveal many of the guys to have spent the last three months killing themselves in the gym for one weekend. That's clearly an instance of hyper-masculine appearance (and a corresponding behaviour) being a major attractor.

If gay men are attracted to other men, wouldn't you logically assume that gay men would exhibit hyper-masculine behavior to attract members of the same sex?... [more]

No worries, armitage.

I personally also believe that any/all homosexual behavior across all species will eventually conform to a specific/repeatable brain pattern
