MeFi post: Jerry Clower: A superb Southern storyteller
Clower is indeed funny. Even though I try to remove myself from my southern heritage he makes me laugh. Some of his stories may be short on punchlines, but whenever I hear him on XM, I find him really easy to listen to. I guess he reminds me of many of my relatives from the south, and is self-aware enough to know how he sounds to non-southerners.

Thanks for the post! I look forward to viewing the videos when I get home.

Hey that was fun! But I know too many words! I only got 31 right, because I kept thinking of all those other words I know.

MeFi post: Typewriter sculptures
Here's a polite request to all pretentious artiste web designers: leave my browser window the hell alone, thanks.

Agreed. My love for those sculptures is overcome by my annoyance of a website that resizes my freakin' browser for no reason, since one of the great things about Flash is that is scales to whatever size window it's in! So let it!! I hate feeling petty, but instead of leaving the site with a good feeling of having seen something awesome, I... [more]

MeFi post: "They'll have their diamonds, and we'll have our pearls."
My daughter works at Wet Seal (teenybopper girlie clothes) and they play a CD of repeating songs. She came home complaining about how that song annoyed her, but since it was repeated all day it stuck in her head. I told her I thought it was a remake of a song from years ago, or at least was the same title. I got distracted and never followed up in trying to find the old version. I should have know MeFi would come through.

I find them both annoying, and I wonder if a guy... [more]

MeFi post: The Butterfly Ball (and the Grasshopper's Feast)
I'm at work so I can't see the vids or take time to thoroughly explore this fascinating post. But I couldn't wait to say 3 things:

1- Deep Purple! Awesome!
2- 70s rock operas! Awesome!
3- Night Flight! Awesome! I loooooved watching Night Flight. And against sterotype, I was a non-drinking, non-drugging, married, 20-something dude. When we bought our first HUGE 27-inch TV, I enjoyed it all the more. One specific memory: the old silent film... [more]

The neighborhood I grew up in was so bad there were no fast food places for miles. I don't recall eating at McD, or BK, or even having pizza delivered until I was 11 and we moved to a slightly less war-torn neighborhood. So, yeah, Mom cooked every day, but that was no guarantee of health, being of southern heritage. However... fried chicken, pork chops, cornbread, potatoes and gravy, and fried cherry turnovers sure taste great!

MeFi post: cuil kids?
Since the world revolves around me, I entered my own name. Google shows my personal website as the first result followed by sites that refer to me, or entries on blogs where I have used my name.

The horribly-named Cuil never shows my personal website, even after going in to 16 pages of results. I gave up after that.

Anyone else remember when Google launched? When it was competing with Yahoo and Altavista, and beat the crap out of them from day one?

Yes! I was using AltaVista mostly, and sometimes Dogpile. A friend sent me a link to Google. Within a couple days, I didn't use anything else.

MeFi post: Password Chart
For my work computer, where I have to change passwords often, I choose a favorite album, one I have memorized, and use the beginning of the lyrics of each song to base my password on, then add a number and special character to the end.

For example, if the album is Dark Side of the Moon, the opening couplet:
Breathe breathe in the air
Don't be afraid to care

might become the password... [more]

MeFi post: 'The Politics of Fear'
Context is everything. But I think even if I did see that on the cover of National Review, I would assume it was a slam against the ridiculous rumors. As a right-leaning guy, I think those stupid rumors only work against conservatives. Unfortunately, polls have shown that too high a percentage of people actually believe them.

I get some of those anti-Obama e-mails, and I always reply with a Snopes link, and a simple sentence that there may be plenty of legitimate reasons... [more]

I'd need to drop a few to get under the 200 lb. limit myself. Maybe we can plan a rollercoaster meetup in a year to give us weight loss incentive. Oh wait. No matter what I weigh, there's no way I'm getting on that thing.

Note about the old double: I figured there was no way this hadn't shown up on MeFi before, but I must not have dug deep enough to find it. The double is old enough to make me wonder how the thing is holding up.

I think the whole "first ride" statement was a media creation. It's surely one of the very few instances where reporters (or "reporters") didn't accurately portray what was being presented.

MeFi post: Capturing Fireworks
Usually, the "modes" just choose a group of settings that work best for that particular kind of photo. I'm guessing it selects a longish shutter speed and mid-range f-stop. It might also focus at infinity. If you don't have manual control over these things, then it might be the best bet. You'd still probably want a tripod.
