MeFi post: I love Scotch too! (Unrelated, but true)
Wouldn't even work for me. On a mac, firefox.

MeFi post: Let's be careful out there....
That was just wonderful. Who cares if it's preaching to the choir? Isn't that rather obvious? Why would you assume that all scientific discussion is (or indeed should be) intended to thwart intelligent design? I think that's a little presumptuous about the importance and attention deserved by all that ID bullshit.
Science is beautiful because it is the truth, not simply because it fights against those who wish to escape from it.

MeFi post: Nostalg-afire Explosion
Huh, I guess it must be just me. Oh well.
I quite clearly remember the pizza being fantastic. In fact, better than any other pizza I'd had at the time. I (shockingly) remember quite clearly having my 7th birthday at a Showtime pizza, reading about Dragon Warrior in my Nintendo Power on the long car ride (40 minutes or so) to the closest "big city." Drawn in by the arcade and those jittery abominations, I later became enraged to find that nobody had come to get me when the... [more]

MeFi post: When Humans Punch Aliens
I have desperately tried, but failed, to come up with a pun on the word "alien" and the term "illegal alien" without being racist.
For this I apologize.

MeFi post: Feudal Crime Lords of Japan
Regarding the crime rate being low, I don't believe that for a second. In fact it's not losing face that causes police to press hard for conviction, it's losing money. In probably one of the most idiotic systems worldwide, Japanese police promotions are based on having a low crime rate and having a high conviction rate. As a result, many MANY crimes go unreported because the police adamantly refuse to do anything upon receiving a complaint. I have heard stories of people who... [more]

MeFi post: Heart Sutra, by Geshe Kunkhen
Am I the only person here who thinks Buddhism is as much a crock of shit as Christianity? Oh, I am? Oh...ok.
Nevermind.
Sorry. I'll go to fark.

MeFi post: Commode Communiqué
This one was especially gripping for me. John Wayne Gacy killed 33 people.
One wonders if perhaps the army is serving as a pleasant venue for psychopaths or if it's just the surroundings that warps one's sense of morality and reality.
Personally, I suspect it is the latter, but this does little to satisfy the old nature vs. nurture (yes yes, it's both, I know) argument. One looks at this and the video of the soldier throwing a puppy off a cliff and wonders what the causes... [more]

MeFi post: "It is easy to take parts of any holy book and make it sound like the most inhuman book ever written"
Psssssst, your laziness is showing.

They would have us all belief that the religious are suffering from a mass delusion, or are all in some way, brain damaged.

Actually no. Quite specifically, they would NOT have us all belief that they are suffering from brain damage. Delusion, yes of course. Brain damage? No. Specifically, no. Dawkins has on multiple occasions in his writing pointed out that intelligence and religious... [more]

RE: The wiki link, I'll refrain from commenting on it due to lack of time resources required to devote to it. But you may be right. I dunno. I'll know tomorrow morning I suppose.
These are concepts that seem completely foreign to the likes of Dawkins, who simply believes that if they cannot be explained within his paradigm they cannot exist.
Wrong again, and that's what I was trying to point out with my "your laziness is showing" comment.... [more]

Just as a side note: I see two sides to this argument. One side making a whole landslide of unsupported claims, and another side that says "Goddamn, you need to do some research!"

Gee. As an adult, I have to say that this seems like an awfully poor choice for a video game title.

MeFi post: Kanamara Matsuri festival
Aw man, I was going to go to that festival, but didn't realize how early it ended and wound up working until about an hour before the end. Tragic, as it's the second year in a row I've wound up missing it.
Bunky, when's the Fuchu festival? That's only 40 minutes or so by train from me, so I'd love to go.

MeFi post: Radiohead Re/mix
Well, speaking of NIN, I feel compelled to chime in on two fronts. First, yes he did it before, and he did it better. Paying for low quality lossy stems? Hah. Having your remix instantly become the property of RH as soon as you upload it? Hah. Hah hah hah. No thanks. I love Radiohead, but they don't seem to have the moral drive that Trent Reznor does.
Secondly, regarding the issue of whether or not anybody knows if the model works, you might find this to be rather interesting. He... [more]

Well of course moral drive and seeking to make bucks aren't mutually exclusive, but in the case of Trent Reznor, it's pretty obvious he values his fans more than RH does theirs, and it shows in the way he's done things. Aside from his repeatedly speaking out against the labels ripping off his fans simply because they can, he's taken the initiative to release under creative commons license and do other things such as let fans retain ownership of their own creations. Even a cursory glance... [more]

Yes, that's true saturnine, but those are also only the figures from the first week of sales. Don't forget that his server more or less crashed. I myself paid for the album but wound up having to download it from The Pirate Bay because the download was impossible. I know a few friends either waited a while to buy/download or resolved to get it from TPB and just buy the physical copy when it becomes available. I'm sure he got to keep more than just $1.6 million.

MeFi post: They carried the joys and sorrows of those living with the sea
Quite striking, each and every one.
I think it's quite telling both of their culture at the time, and our culture now, that these are marked NSFW.
Something to think about, perhaps.

MeFi post: Is this Progress?
Heh, I was just popping in to point out that this isn't a new idea, but glad to see I don't need to. There's been a store called "nekonomise," which translates to "cat's store" at the station I live at. You can see it from the platform, and it's been here longer than I have. I've always thought it might be fun to go in and check it out, but it always seemed odd to combine coffee and shedding.

MeFi post: Habla Ingles or You Ain't Getting No Cheesesteak
I'm sure (in fact positive, by reading comments in the thread) that this guy's a complete asshole, but I really do agree with the "speak English" sentiment. Not because I hate immigrants or am xenophobic, simply because I think it's inexcusable laziness to live in a country you don't speak the mother tongue of.
I'm an American, born in Michigan, who's studied Japanese for over half a decade in order to live in the land whose culture and history and language I love. I live... [more]

MeFi post: Bassically, it's a series of tubas
Well. I feel like a douche for this but...I lived in EL for three years, went there once, and never went back.
I just wasn't all about the food. Not that it was bad, just that it didn't make me as happy as the general atmosphere did.
It felt imbalanced.
Were I not living all the way across the globe now though, I'd happily make a return visit.

MeFi post: Help the police.
I've never heard the original version, though my first ever rock concert was Powerman 5000, Static X, and Dope, the last of whom did a cover of this song.
I got all nostalgic and giggled.
Sorry.
