Ask post: Bedphones.
You can sleep on your side and only have one headphone from your iPod in (in the ear that is exposed).

Ask post: Have you kicked the habit in a group?
Have you tried reading Allen Carr's Easy Way to Stop Smoking? It's the best bang for your buck.

Wow! That kind of scares me as I'm on it right now. I do know that Allen Carr's business has group sessions all over the place so you could always book with them and talk with real people.

I wish you all the best in your endeavours.

Thanks for all the great posts.

M.C. Lo-Carb! - I can see how it can function as a slippery slope back to the original addiction.

Ask post: Whence the Dylan fourth?
For Like a Rolling Stone, if feel is the fourth, then what would you call the word rolling later in the line? Doesn't rolling sound like a true suspended fourth and the other just like a sharp third?

On the other hand, I just played it on the piano the way you stated and it doesn't sound off, so maybe it's an audible illusion that I'm hearing it resolve to the third.

Ask post: Digital noise recording to Mac Pro
It says on the apple site that the MacPro has an analog in and out. Try that.

It's possible that the "digital out" on the xbox is actually analog and the preview within the Mac is listening to it like that.

I should know more about this but I forget so wait for some more advice. However, without an analog to digital converter the Mac won't be hearing the signal properly if you're trying to record with the digital in.... [more]

Ask post: Hair Today, Gone Tomorrow
1. What about wearing shirts or sweaters which have a lot of lint on them? You could focus on picking that.

2. Shaving two or three times a day for a couple of months to break the habit of pulling on facial hair?

3. Buying an electric razor that allows you to keep a trim beard (think Don Johnson or George Michael).

4. Putting gel/moisture on your face over the course of the day making it too difficult to get a good grip on the stubble?

Good luck!

Ask post: A 27-year-old in a 29-year-old's body?
In social situations with strangers in bars and things like that I don't see much problem with saying you're 27 instead of 29. People lie about tonnes of things in those situations, and it takes too much time to explain why you want to be 27 instead of 29. It is a lie though, and people may subconsciously pick up on the fact that you're lying and it may unexpectedly have them distance themselves from you.

But, without getting moralistic about it, is it necessary? I find... [more]

My application of the ladder theory is simply: First impression matters, and be honest. If you like a girl, let her know. Don't disguise romantic intention as friendship; and don't be surprise if your object of desire reacts poorly when you reveal your hidden motive after pretending to be her friend for so long. To be sure, certain women lack integrity too. They happily string a man along under the guise of friendship, taking advantage of his love sickness. This is a waste of time; so... [more]

Ask post: How can I best learn the French language, grammar, and pronunciation?
www.europe1.fr

Buy the becherelle junior book. Its explanation of basic grammar and pronunciation is second to none (it's in French though).

Get a list of the top 50 verbs used in any language and then write the conjugations out 50 times per verb. Do it so that you can associate by sight any conjugation of that verb with its infinitive meaning.

Go to lemonde.fr or lefigaro.fr and just write out by hand, or by typing, the... [more]

Ask post: Late-night solo dining in Paris?
There's an American style diner in the 8th on Rue Montalivet which serves hot food until 11 or so. I forget the name, but it's near the corner of Montalivet and Rue des Saussaies. The burgers are good.

I'm pretty sure it's called Bugsy's.

Ask post: "Mark As Unread" Doesn't Work For Me Anymore
Getting Things Done using labels within Gmail. But you can use folders if it's some other email program. At the top of your list of folders you have:
@NextActions
@Read/Review
@Respond
@Someday/Maybe
@Waiting

You put the @ sign so that they are at the top of your list. To mine, I've added the folders
– RespondLater
– NextActionsLater
– Waiting Later

That, and keeping your inbox to zero (always archiving). It's a very efficient system.

Ask post: I'd really like to get to give this a shot - can you help?
What would be wrong with emailing him something similar to what you've said here? Or learn it fairly well and discuss it with him over dinner? It reads fairly solid to me. You're just talking about how you feel, and that you'd like to give it a chance. In fact, you mentioned how if you had a definite time when you'd see him next that would make you feel better. That's not that much of a commitment.
posted to Ask Metafilter by fantasticninety at 5:31 PM on May 6, 2008
Well, I'm a man and it really didn't read like you were going to say something to dissuade him. So let's say you said something like "I'm really into you, etc. etc., and I think we could spend more time together...even by living in the same city. You're not getting any younger, neither am I and we clearly enjoy each other's company." So either

It's these puzzles that I just can't decipher. When I say something (esp if it affects someone else's emotional well-being), I actually, ya know, MEAN IT.

That's why the more emphasis you put on your feelings will either result in him saying something he thinks you want to hear but not really meaning it or just disengaging from the situation (the more likely scenario). You know how you feel, what you want to know is how he feels. If instead, what you... [more]

Ask post: Gmail Blocked – Even Worse!
Well it's a school board and they have it blocked because students try to write with the gmail chat option.

The smartphone is a good long–term solution.

It's super unlikely that they'll change a policy like that since it's top down driven.

I doubt the IT guy would change it as he's already refused to make simple changes like installing firefox or fixing something else so I ain't expecting much on this one either.
posted to Ask Metafilter by fantasticninety at 3:47 PM on May 1, 2008
All the web proxies I tried were blocked. Maybe there's a way to access a web proxy through another proxy? FWIW, the gmail addresses with the https don't immediately get blocked but just eventually time out. I don't know if that gives any more information about how the web blocking is worked (other sites, like blogs go to a blocked screen immediately).

I didn't realise that something like installing firefox wouldn't constitute a simple change. Thanks for explaining that... [more]

Thanks for pointing out the LogMeIn webpage. The mobile phone thing also strikes me as the most likely long–term good solution.

As for the fact that you can download attachments via Gmail, you can also do that with the web email work allows me to use so I don't see any difference.

The other solutions, including the jumpdrive just strike me as too far outside the realm of reasonable expectation of use at work. Using gmail before with an alternate... [more]

Gwenzel – you're right about that. I overlooked that on first glance. So, if logmein doesn't work I'll probably go with a phone of some sort. It's a shame that GMAIL hasn't worked on a solution to this by offering a definite non–chat version of their email with a separate email address for it.

Oh well...

Ask post: How do you respond to a friend who's hurt you through carelessness?
In my opinion, it sounds like the following:
– she filled the email with a lot of other stuff because she felt bad about not being able to go
– she would've told you earlier but felt bad about not being to go

In other words, she probably already feels bad about not being able to go but doesn't want to feel any worse about it than she does. In which case, calling her out on it probably won't do you any long term favours.

If... [more]

So far the Getaway looks like the best as you have a free roam option to explore much of London. As great as the graphics look on some of the other ones, it's fairly limited how much of the city you can see. So I'd take more territory to explore over better graphics.

Ask post: French film where narrator commits suicide?
Unfortunately, it is none of these films (although many of them look quite interesting!). It dealt with a man who was a businessman of some sort and near the end there's a lavish meal on the rooftop and afterwards he walks to the other side, the camera pans up (probably a crane or helicopter) and as he's narrating he jumps off the other side to his death.

It's a somewhat surreal film with a lot of dark comedy if I remember correctly; bright colours as well. That's all I can remember.

Ask post: Fast user switching a pain with a Mac Mini
Bear with me here. Having them press Ctrl Option and Space to switch keyboard layouts is not an option on your mac? I use a custom layout on my computer because they don't have a layout which mirrors the exact foreign keyboard I learned on and it takes .2 seconds to switch the layout after login.

The only other option I can think of is to get rid of the standard layout so that there's only the custom layout for the computer to choose.

Ask post: Help me collect rent!
PFL - I suspect your friend has zero clue that he put you out a lot by not paying the rent on time. It sounds like he just expected that to be taken care of, and he was right because you did take care of it. The thing that you have most control of is how you will respond the next time this happens. Are you going to pay
a. pay the rent for him so that all is well with the lease and then internally seethe like you did this time?
b. not pay the rent for him and then... [more]

I've wrestled and continue to wrestle with the same scenario as the original poster here. I find that saying to myself "This feeling will pass" helps to put off drinking during those moments of boredom when a few cans of beer would take me somewhere else for awhile. The feeling really does pass although you have to be patient for a few minutes.
