Help a father BE a father
If he has an income, he will almost definitely not fit the requirements for legal aid.
This is not entirely accurate. I work in legal aid and have had clients will full-time (albeit low paying) jobs. You don't have to be unemployed to qualify for legal aid. If you boyfriend calls the intake office to see if he qualifies, the worst they can say is no.
And while the demand for custody representation is high in the legal aid world,... [more]

Please help me help my friend.
Nthing the women's shelter suggestion. I would go with her, if I were you. It sounds as though the both of you are overwhelmed, but the shelter will be staffed by compassionate experts who have seen countless similar situations. They should offer stuff like support groups, a 24-hour hotline, emergency housing, information/referrals for counseling, and so on.
I work in legal aid, mainly with protection from abuse orders and other family law stuff, so I guess I should... [more]

Contact the local legal aid office. They should have lists of resources/programs (whether state, local or federal) for people facing financial difficulties. Among other things, they could put her in touch with food, housing, childcare and budget counseling programs. And as stated above, a women's shelter could also be a good source of information.

How does a very good man meet a very good woman?
My tried-and-true advice for meeting romantic partners is this: volunteer work.
Wait, don't leave! Volunteering for a project that you care about is of course rewarding in and of itself, but can also be an opportunity to meet people with similar interests and values -- moreso than striking blindly into the bar scene, for example. If your friend is charitable, as you say, he may be open to such a venture. Working closely over time is a great way to get to know someone,... [more]

Pack your bag tonight so you won't have to worry about forgetting things in the morning.
Take a hot bath with aromatherapy stuff, and go to bed at a decent hour.
Seconding the protein-rich breakfast. My mum took me out for steak and eggs, if I recall.

Call and response where we all know the response
If you run out of pop songs, you could try military cadences. Only the person calling the cadence needs to know the words.
Samples:
I Want to be an Airborne Ranger
C-130 Rolling Down the Strip
Hard Corps
Run Me, Run Me, Run Me
My SO's brother-in-law and his (young) kids sing these in the car. It's fun.
Note: May not be suitable for pacifists.... [more]

Help us decide where to live!
Pittsburgh!
It's cheap, friendly, beautiful (in my opinion, especially in the spring) and all-around awesome. It's also stuffed with colleges and universities. I love it. If it was a dude, I'd marry it.

Beyond Bruschetta
If the baguette goes stale, make savory french toasties.
Dip slices in a mixture of eggs, milk, salt/pepper and spices of your choice. Brown on both sides in frying pan. Top with fresh shredded cheese and/or herbs and/or whatever else you might like.

Money and mental illness
You could have your father establish a testamentary trust (just a fancy label for a trust created by a will), with yourself or an attorney as the trustee.
A lawyer would be able to work with you to custom tailor the terms of the trust to address your concerns. For example, $X to your daughter per year for her lifetime, or until she reaches age Y. Or, the power to disburse money and the amount of any disbursement could be left to the trustee's discretion, based on the... [more]

Best ways to prepare slabs of chicken?
My go-to chicken recipe:
Grind dried rosemary. Add garlic powder, tiny bit of chili powder, salt and pepper.
Combine spice mix with olive oil.
Rub spice/olive oil mix underneath chicken skin.
Roast.
Remove skin.
EAT.
The olive oil ensures that the chicken is super-moist, and you can alter the spice combination according to whim. Delicious and hard to screw up.

Educational Opportunity or Con Job?
I went to the National Youth Leadership Forum on Law when I was about 16. I'm currently about halfway through law school. However, I'm not sure that there is a strong causal link between the two.

- Skills seminars
- Assigned readings and group discussions (I know we had twice daily small-group sessions, but I really can't remember what we talked about)
- Observation of a criminal trial

How do I stay more hydrated at night?
Do you use mouthwash before bed? Many contain alcohol, which could dry you out. Some brands offer alcohol-free mouthwashes. I use Crest Pro-Health, for example.
Also, you could try something like this oral spray, which claims to remedy "severe dry mouth symptoms."

The No SSRI way to alleviating test anxiety. Can you help me with it?
I take Paxil for anxiety and have experienced neither weight gain nor sexual dysfunction. I actually lost weight while on it (because of changes in my workout routine, not because of the drug).
I started taking it after having crazy, unrelenting panic attacks during my first round of 1L law exams. No problems since then. And taking Paxil has shown me the degree to which anxiety had been having a negative impact on my life, exam time or no.

Should I go to law school?
I think you should go if you're interested in the subject matter and the process of learning to think like a lawyer. Just don't expect to "find yourself," career-wise -- it might happen and it might not. Consider the possibility that after some hefty student loans and three years of rigorous work, you still may end up without having discovered your "single, overriding passion." If that's okay with you, then go for it.
As a data point, I started law... [more]
