Heed the Birds
I took a long video of starlings flocking at Eastbourne Pier a few years ago.
It gets a bit more focused 2 minutes or so in, then it gets really wild.
Birds are such sheep.

It would be real nice if they could learn how to link and use page anchors. HTML isn't that hard.

Dr. Hyde's results will appear in Science, which means peer review.
From what I have heard Science, which has an awesome impact factor overall, has a pretty poor reputation for quality in psychology. Not all peer reviews are equal.
Also, for those who don't know..peer review usually means the editor and three reviewers, hopefully qualified and motivated area experts, have examined the article. Peer review is only the first... [more]

"Hear angel trumpets and devil trombones!"
I love the strong insularity of the British Music scene. I don't care for much of what they produce but it at least means I can see North American acts in small venues when they tour on this side of the pond. I saw the Long Winters with maybe 10-15 other people. Broken Social Scene, the Stars and Fiest with around 200 at each show. The National with about 400. I'd never get that close in Toronto.

I have translated this into a NYTimes trend piece:

Iran, Iran So Far Away
America is that popular guy you knew in high school. Beautiful, free, a bit dumb and crazy as hell. All that youthfull promise and potential matured into vain, reckless, staggering stupidity and a full break from reality.
Yet the world still fills with hope when there are moments of self-awareness, lucidity and sobriety. America then basks in that hope and gains confidence, remembers past glory and pictures future success and decides that now, finally now, he can... [more]

Banksy uncovered?
As an American (a Californian even!) who has recently moved to the UK, I can tell you that thats a very "American" question to ask and one that Brits undoubtedly perceive as naive.
They also think it is very American to expect toilets to flush properly.

I'd love to feel good about this site but somehow adding a flash interface to articles already on the BBC website just makes it harder for the web to work efficiently.

At long last, margarine freedom
That's an AWESOME reason. I would imagine most sandwich shops/cafes where I am use margarine, and I'm sure when the staff ask me "you want butter?" they are using the word "butter" interchangably with "margarine". Sometimes I would say "yes, I would, but that stuff there isn't butter, is it? Do you actually have any butter?" and make the sandwich maker's brain aspolde. I would be ELATED if we had a law stating that margarine must be clearly... [more]

'If I didn't have this house to look after, then I'd be well off'
These days, the Labour party's somewhat revolutionary view, as expressed by Baroness Blackstone, the former heritage minister, is that it is "no longer constructive to see this as the toffs and us".
Nice of a baroness to point out that the labour party is now toffs R us.

I'm curious to hear what people like this guy who thought he was railroaded just for being geeky have to say now.
Probably something along the lines of "innocent until proven guilty". Now he is definitively proven guilty.

"This mighty garden" and its "methods of culture"
Native peoples have been doing it for 100s of thousands of years. The western concept of "wilderness" was a blank check to conquer and tame nature and the people who lived in harmony with it.
I'm guessing Head Smashed In Buffalo Jump would have been the Drum solo part of this supposed "harmony".

Truly Brutal
To be fair the true ugliness of that area is the copthorn hotel which is rather incongrously jammed up against the paradise center (notice they have no exterior images on their website). It is the red glass building on either side of the walkway that can be seen here and here. Also nothing quite says community as well as filling the open space of the paradise center/library with a Nandos, a mcdonalds, a faux pub and a few sandwich/coffee shops.
Birmingham's new vision... [more]

It was the most bizarre effort to manufacture a grievance that I have seen in some time.
This has been the stuff of US politics for about 20 years. All someone has to do is say something obviously true and the press goes apeshit.

Now all he has do is watch England get invaded, 2 million die , about 10 million flee to France to beg and whore, a puppet government installed and everything given away to occupiers and he might have a clue how wrong he has been in conflating his opposition to fundamentalist religion with supporting an invasion and occupation.

My reading is that five fresh fish is justifiably resentful of the horrible crimes committed in his name by his government and understandably wanting to punish the leaders by inflicting upon them a tiny portion of the horror that they have inflicted on others.
Is this really such an unreasonable idea? Are you not aware that there are probably hundreds of millions of people who have at least thought of doing the same thing?
Ah,... [more]

I constantly struggle with the US habit of describing animals by their weight. I had no bloody idea how big a 375lb bear was until I clicked through. We (UK) always tend to describe animals by physical dimensions, as much as I remember.
Tell me how you would measure a bear. Is the height on all fours or standing upright on two legs?
