Music post: I Trust You To Kill Me
I'd also like to clarify just so there is no doubt, though this song was originally written a year or so ago.. it was never recorded, in fact I had forgotten entirely about it until I ran across the sheet of paper I wrote it on two days ago. That's when I started recording, and ended up with this.

Ask post: 54 year-old pot head
I don't have fibromyalgia, but a friend of mine does. He has documented history of it, so he contacted a local office that helps connect patients with doctors willing to prescribe marijuana. I suggest looking for one in the phone book or newspaper. If you have a documented history with past doctors of pain from fibromyalgia and see the right doctor, you should have no issues obtaining a permit. Assuming that is, that your state laws allow for this.

Music post: MeFi-related phrases for Jean Grae project?
MetaFilter is overthinking a plate of beans again. I'm just trying to cheerlead and get people excited about a killer idea, I was only even told of this like 10 hours ago.. I'm just looking for the beginnings of what people think they want musically. The "on the ball" comment was rude and I apologize. I just thought that the project could use a kick to get it onto the level where people start talking music and trading audio to find where they want to go with it.

I'm slowly coming to the realization that my at times unrelenting enthusiasm comes across as bossiness..

I agree with Cortex.. while Music is absolutely the most forgotten part of MeFi, I don't think anyone here really considers themselves worth paying.. we're all just hobbyists. While 800 dollars seems like a lot for a simple 16 bar verse, you're paying for the name more then anything else. And since it'll be a big collaborative remix project, I think that the 800 dollars will pay itself in spades with the flock of remixes..

Of course, I say that as a creative contributor only, I am a broke ass kid and can't afford any more then MAYBE 5 bucks..

If they are worth paying for, then support the artist and buy the track/album/t shirt/whatever.

And if they one day offer their services for sale, take them up on the offer.

As for my own work.. I consider myself a musician first and foremost in my life, have for 18 years. But I make no money off it. Never have really. Even when I tour with any of my bands, or play shows locally, money still doesn't really happen. Though someday soon Punch 'Em... [more]

Heh.. good way to put it.. getting booed off..

I have been musician since I was 9. I have been a hobbyist in home recording since 1997 or so. I have a lot of years and experience under my belt, so I pride myself on being able to make some pretty good sounding things from very meager equipment (my whole "studio" is culled from items I pulled from garbage over the years.. not even kidding)

I suppose what we're mincing over is the... [more]

There's your Wiki. It's quick, dirty, and free. We'll have to use public hosting sites for files, but it's a minor inconvenience at worst. Let's see if we can't move some of the conversation there..

Is anyone aware of any free Wikihosts that have turnkey template Wiki's with no-register access?

MeTa post: Jean Grae on music.metafilter
We could well just send her a click track if that's what we REALLY wanted. Though I might suggest someone (Treasurer?) contact her to see if this would be acceptable. Just say that we want a verse from her as a sort of collaborative remix project, and the outcome will have many songs available.

So I suppose someone should write her with the specifics (need verse, will pay, is theme okay?, is the whole collaborative remix idea okay?) and then if she's down.. we'll send... [more]

Here's a download link for an MP3 of a simple 6/8 beat I just threw together as an example to see if people are into the idea of a 6/8 beat.. This is not intended as a final product by any means, just a mere example..

posted to MetaTalk by mediocre at 10:31 PM on September 22, 2008
It is 6/8, it's just hammered into a 4/4-like pattern because of the necessity of a strong steady rhythm.. I don't really know if odd time signature hip hop is possible..
posted to MetaTalk by mediocre at 6:20 AM on September 23, 2008
I don't know.. I'll try again.. It's really difficult to come up with anything rappable, even this isn't really and it's damn near 4/4.. You just NEED a steady snare hit to keep the flow, without that it falls apart..
posted to MetaTalk by mediocre at 6:22 AM on September 23, 2008
Here's the same beat, with a few more bells and whistles.. It's technically programmed in 6/8, but every time I deviated from something resembling 4/4 it became really difficult to rhyme over it..

Ah dammit, meant to include the download link.. sorry..

I think there is a general lack of direction in the musical department. I'm certainly in, and I know Juicy Karkass is, but aside from us, flapjax, and cortex (who have committed unspecific musical contributions).. it needs a kick start, that's for sure.. I think a Wiki with some sort of upload capacity (or we could just use MegaUpload, etc..) would be a great collaboration tool, but I have no means of doing that myself..

I think one problem is that everyone has their... [more]

Oh and 16 bars, I correct myself.. But still, 16 bars is 45 seconds maybe.. It's a lot more to work with then 8 bars, but it's still just a base.

Ask post: What to expect out of short stay in county?
3 days is just long enough to get really bored with jail and promise never to end up back there because the thought of any more then a couple days of that much nothing is enough to keep you on the straight and narrow.

I wouldn't be concerned for your safety at all, most of the people there will be friendly enough and you won't be spending enough time there to become part of any sort of pecking order. You'll probably learn to play spades and hear some funny assed stories... [more]

Oh, and really.. dhartung and jaydar are talking statistics and bell curves.. The reality of it is, it is 3 days, and the people you encounter will AT WORST be intimidating enough to not make eye contact with them. That's about it. There certainly won't be TV or magazines, if you have anything to read at all it'll be a bible or Louis L'Amour.. I don't know what it is about Louis L'Amour but that's the most common author I've seen in any jail I've been in. Last time I found a novelization of an... [more]

I could remix.. actually, we are revamping the song with a whole new recording, the beat will be different too.. But probably only a little.. I'll see if I can get that done by the end of the month. We are re-cutting all our original demo tracks from last summer to better reflect our current situation. A lot of those songs I've posted were left with my first two vocal takes and no overdubs. Juicy Karkass was really meticulous about his tracks, but I tended to let mine hang and it shows. I'm... [more]

MeFi post: Metallica Friday
I frequent a heavy metal message board where Metallica related topics are immediately locked.

I kinda wish the same applied here.

Nothing against iniginokt, I just feel like the well of Metallica discussion ran dry twenty years ago. Yes, we (all true old school metalheads) have been betrayed by them. Yes, we all realize that the first three albums are classics (though not everyone agrees). No, they will never redeem themselves.... [more]

Also, it's a bit of an insult to remixes to call what Justice did a remix.. they just played it and slammed their fist on an MPC in vague rhythm..

I dare them to play "Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go" instead.

I really, really wish that my old band had some recorded version of this, even if it was just boombox quality..

But my old Trip Hop band Opusindra, as a joke taken too far, did a sloooow, depressing, morose version of Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go. We had just played a show, and someone remarked that we were so slow and depressing that we could make Wake Me Up.... [more]

Grumble.. here come the audiophiles..

The album is garbage, and I knew that before I looked at the waveform.. I swear I need to come up with some sort of double blind taste test to use against people who scream about brickwall masters. I realize they are a problem, but it is just mastering for what people are using, which is PMP's. People don't sit around the Hi-Fi and listen to records anymore. Anything on a PMP will need to be super loud in order to drown out the din... [more]

I am in Portland, OR. This was recorded in 1997 I think, maybe 1998.. I can't remember, in Bend, OR. How a recording that was made at least 9 years ago (before the P2P music sharing explosion) and released only on cassette in Bend, OR somehow found its way onto a Russian hard drive is beyond me..

The second verse really has strong Gibbons-isms. I still think it's a great song, but I'm impartial..

Very nice, sounds like the sort of thing (but with better drum sounds) I used to make, out of my head on DXM, on an el-cheapo Tascam 4-track..

Just to sweeten it up a little more, I might suggest adding tape saturation to the final master just to give it some analog warmth. If you haven't already anyways, it has a pretty warm sound already..

Whenever I try to actively write 80's sounding synth music, be it New Romantic like this (a bit more dark, tends to be minor keys) or sheer Techno Pop like Erasure.. whatever I end up with sounds like crap. Or more accurately, like any of the disposable "Electroclash" groups around these days pretending they are doing something new. So kudos, because all this needs is some tenor crooning, and you'd have the panties of a million UK girls thrown at you..

If Cricket service is available where you are, I would suggest that. It's cheap, and abundant in minutes/texts. If that isn't an option, then AT&T Go would be your next best bet. If you get autodraft then the minutes you buy each month end up cheaper then most any other PAYG or Pre-Paid phones.

This is amazing musical satire. The only thing that keeps it from being perfect is the vocals, I just feel like they should be attacked as WILDLY over the top David Lee Roth style to contrast the super vanilla musicianship.

Man, that's a great idea, taking all the bending out of a song that so depends on it for feeling.. Kudos!
