MeFi post: I've got big plans for my future.
What is disturbing is that she is an actress, playing a role. So one of those roles was an adults only joke, and another role is aimed at kids. How is this any different than any other actress? That NSFW clip isn't her stating her beliefs, that is her, as an actress, playing a part.

So, when Alice Cooper was on the Muppets, that was okay - but this....isn't?

MeFi post: Like VistaPrint for fundies!
oh, ugh. Except in circumstances where you are only known as 'Emma and Leigh's mom", ie, when you meet for the first time the parents of your kid's friends, why, oh why would anyone want to define themselves only in terms of their relationship with their children?

Remove the twee graphics and the "somebody's mommy" tagline, and these are essentially an updated version of social cards, which have been around for decades and are very useful things to have... [more]

dog food sugar, I guess the big problem with them is that it is really only women that get reduced to being a valid human being by virtue of their relationship to other people, specifically their children. These cards are created by a man that runs his own (home based?) business, but he isn't printing cards for men that define themselves as "Matthew, Susie and Pixie's Dad" - he is specifically targeting women as needing this product.

So the underlying... [more]

The issue isn't about having a handy way to give someone your contact info - I think everyone here, on both sides of the debate would agree that it is a handy thing, to be able to give someone a condensed list of how to contact you and that there is nothing wrong with using social cards - athought technically, social cards don't have contact information on them, just one's name. Preferably engraved by those nice people at Birks.

The bigger issue is that of context and... [more]

She is in my friends list as well. I added her because of her garden/flower pics, and for the same reason I add other strangers - I like people who have an interesting POV, and she does, beyond the 'being famous' stuff.

MeFi post: Check Out My Breasts
I am female, and i thought this was great! I think most women don't do self exams precisely because there is that notion of, "Oh, I am probably not doing this right." I've done them, and i have had them done, but I have never seen one done, and it turns out to be very helpful. Plus the model is very cheery, which is always a plus.

MeFi post: Buy His Future
Need blind admissions and schools like Harvard offering free tuition for students whose parents make under $40 000.00 a year tell me that higher education is already changing for the better. Seems to me in 2 years Joe could have lived at home, worked like a dog, and paid off enough of those loans that he could then go forward with his glorious future. Or, he could have chosen a perfectly good education at a less expensive school.

I don't think his financial folly will... [more]

MeFi post: Ever wonder who still speaks latin?
Yeah! I was a Classics major in University, so this thread makes me very happy! And while there isn't a lot of need for latin in day to day life, it is great training for logical thinking, translating your medical charts, and when listed on a resume gives your interviewer something to talk about.

And there are so many jobs listed in the newspaper for Latin speakers! Just look in the want ads, under 'Restaurant Help needed'.

MeFi post: Longest serial murder investigation in U.S. history comes to a close.
Some of the victims were found in Oregon, weren't they - a death penalty state, I think. I am generally not pro-death penalty, but I remember the fear when these women started going missing and part of me hopes he is convicted in Oregon.

I am with Orange Swan - a lot of value judgements that have no place ina murder investigation. And something about the list of Jane Doe victims just brings tears to my eyes.

I want one of these! I am only about 5'9", but I have really long legs, and when the person in front of me reclines their seat, that seat sits on top of my kneecaps.

Frankly, airplane seats do not need to be reclined. Behaviour on airplanes is plenty tacky enough without the rudeness of the reclining people, both the to the ones who sit behind them and the ones sitting next to them.

I was a pretty active 3WA participant back in the day, 2 or 3 years ago - I think I might have been the first member. The board took off, and the membership grew, and between the number of threads started every day, and incessant reloading to participate in 'threaded conversations', along with other popular boards closing down (Hissyfit) and their members migrating en masse to 3WA, the bandwidth costs must be enormous. And for the last few years, the owners of the site have paid for it out of... [more]

Why is being naked such a big deal in America - big enough that exhibit viewers, who all have genitalia themselves, and see and handle both their own and their lover's equipment every day, cannot see this exhibit as it was intended?

And why is it ok to exhibit a Kouros, but not okay to exhibit a willingly nude live man next to it?

All of this is very strange to me. A forum on Slashdot is open for the express purpose of asking Mr. Zeldman questions, and all anyone can think of, or focus on, is what he is doing with his personal site.

When people start criticising personal sites, I suddenly get a mental image of a big glass house and a pile of stones. Your mileage may vary.

I am confused. How is it copyright theft for Microsoft to set up a site called digitaldiva, but not theft for someone to own mattl.com, one letter off of mattel. (devil's advocate, like).
And, how they can complain about theft after taking the digitaldivas name, since there was for years a magazine called DigitalDivas, since they have been, in fact, infringing on the publication's trademark.

My vote is, very offensive.

Well, you know, Eric, I have been wrong before :)

I don't think that people are over reacting. This is a 'game' in which the sole objective is to manipulate professional women out of their clothing. This is more than just a bimbo portrayal of women.

And it is a big deal. It is a big deal because so many people can dismiss it by saying it is just 'another' example of this sort of thing, or 'boys will be boys'.

The more articles I read about this, the more frustrated I get. Artists don't make their serious money on album sales anyway, they make it on concert revenue, and products like Napster only help to introduce them to new listeners, and hopefully boost ticket sales.

Napster is nothing more than the new mix tape.

posted to MetaFilter by sperare at 1:33 PM on April 19, 2000
Mathowie is absolutely right...Metallica suing Napster is akin to them suing the makers of the blank cassette tapes because people use cassettes to tape music from the radio. Or used to :)

I don't believe Napster hurts the artists...if anyone gets hurt, it seems to be the huge corporations that surround the artists that may lose a little money (and that hasn't been proven, btw that Napster is hurting sales), and i have no great sentimental feeling for them.... [more]

Why does a story like this get so much media attention? Why is American media saturated with stories of idiotic people doing stupid things, and/or minutia about movie and television stars?
