Ask post: Help me find UK-compatible Personal Finance Software or Sites?
(I work at Wesabe.) We do support UK banks and GBP as a currency. Try the Firefox Uploader to get automatic bank synchronization for most UK banks (I only know of Egg not working at all).

Ask post: Need a good case for a Canon Rebel XT
I just bought a Crumpler "5 million dollar home" for my brand-new XT, with pretty much the same requirements. I don't think a case that stays on the camera is a good solution because you wind up blocking access to the controls you'd want, or not covering anything but the non-fragile parts. I figured a bag was a better option.

Crumpler's site is either neat and cool or the most completely hostile Flash interface ever, depending on your point of view. I found... [more]

Oops, forgot to include this link, which has the best in-the-wild Crumpler pictures I've seen.

Ask post: feed them
Touch of Grace biscuits. These are easy to make and a crowd-pleaser at breakfast or dinner. Be sure to get White Lily flour -- in the Bay Area you can get it at Draeger's in San Mateo -- and an 8" cake pan.

The best advice, though, is to cook something you're really comfortable making. A Buche de Noel is impressive, but leaves tons of room for utter disaster -- and really it isn't even all that tasty. A simple chocolate cake or a recipe you've done a loved a... [more]

Sorry, missed the "no special pans" constraint. The flour is very cheap (~$4); if you can use an 8" cake pan, great. If not a 9" (which is what most people have) will work.

Ask post: Encyclopedia Brown and the Case of the Exploding Oven Door
Bakers warn that you should place a towel over the oven window when pulling anything with moisture out of a hot oven. A little bit of moisture on very hot glass can cause the window to shatter.

It could be that the hot pizza oven and some run-off from the pizza caused the initial crack.

Ask post: How much to spend?
I think a great early-SO gift lets the person know you've learned something about them that other might not know or see, and signals to them that you're serious about them. Cost can be a signal, but so can many other things.

I gave a gift once of a box with twelve envelopes, each of which had a date on it, one per month for the next year. Each envelope contained two tickets to some event (theater, ballet, opera) which I thought she'd like. She got to open the envelope... [more]

fishfucker: thanks! My uncle stole it and used it with my aunt very successfully, too.

jacquilynne: This would be a very romantic gift, I think, if you were already dating for a year. But 3 months into a relationship, making more than vague, dreamy plans for events a year in advance would seem incredibly creepy and presumptuous to me.

That's right. Which is why my next sentence was: Your relationship is probably a little early yet for that particular gift, but maybe it inspires other ideas.

Ask post: Best Simpsons episode?
Fortunately there's no right answer to this question. Except this one: Brother From the Same Planet.

Oh, my god. "Higher, Dad! Higher!" The starfish and the shark made me think, the show is unstoppable.

Ask post: How much is a man's hair worth?
I think all the absolute answers are wrong. For some women, it matters a lot, and they won't date a bald or balding guy. For others, it's just not a big deal. For a few, it's a turn-on. The good thing is that this is a pretty obvious trait, so the women who don't like baldness will simply not respond to you (in person or online) at all -- and that's great. Move on to the ones who don't care or who like it.

I agree with everyone who has said the best thing is to... [more]

Ask post: What book should I turn into a movie?
The Deceivers. You'll have to work to get through the book, but there is a ton of fantastic material in it. "Based on a true story!"

Oh, yeah. How could I forget? Interface. Please. It would make a fantastic movie, and there's nothing science fiction about it.

Ask post: Help me win her over with music
How, how, how did this thread get so long with no one suggesting "Perhaps, Perhaps, Perhaps" by Doris Day?
if you can't make your mind up
we'll never get started
and i don't wanna wind up
being parted
broken-hearted

Any girl who fails to laugh at that isn't worth the cost of a blank CD. ;)

Ooh, ooh -- "I'm Straight" by Jonathan Richman and the Moden Lovers!
I saw you today, you know, walk by with hippie Johnny.
Look, I had to call up and say, I want to take his place.
See he's stoned, hippie Johnny.
Now get this, I'm straight and I want to take his place.
Now look, I like him too, I like hippie Johnny.
But I'm straight
and I want to take his place.
For the record, I used the... [more]

Ask post: How do you live a computer-independent computing lifestyle?
Depending on how comfortable you are with Unix & Subversion, this article on checking your home directory into source control is great. Being able to configure any Unix box for your use with a single checkout is great.

Ask post: Help me, Obi-Wan Kenobi
I *think* you can stall a car by shoving a heavy cloth into the exhaust pipe (if you can do that safely). Might save you some gas and a trip to refill the tank.

Er, you might want to get someone else to confirm my suggestion before trying it. I did this to a Volkswagen once, but it was many years ago and I could have the instructions wrong.

Ask post: We've got company
Sallysings' #5 is right on. From downtown SF, I once took the N Judah towards Caltrain, got off and waited for the train going back the other way, making sure no one else did the same. If someone had, I would have gotten off at the last moment and taken Caltrain or a cab (plentiful at the station) instead. Be sure that the person doesn't get back on as you go through downtown again.

It's much harder to do if you want not to be observed throwing the tail. One useful... [more]

Ask post: What to get for a samurai movie fan/middle school teacher?
Lone Wolf and Cub. You could get #1 and #2 for $20. It's fantastic, and would also go over well with students in class.

Ask post: Interviewer tips?
How do you find great people to hire? What is it about someone that makes you want to go from seeing their resume or getting a referral for them to bringing them in for an interview? How many resumes do you review, and how many people do you interview, before filling a typical job in your organization?

When you have someone in for an interview, what techniques do you use to determine if they will make a great hire? What do you do outside of interviewing them directly... [more]
