Man, it turns out on review that moving our dumb little Weber grill would be a lot of mess and effort for it just being a dumb little Weber grill, so I think we're gonna not bring ours and just proceed in a spirit of optimism and friendship without it. But we've got some fish brined and dried off, and some veggies prepped for instant grilling satisfaction.

Indeed! Great time, nice to see new people, am pretty sure my body is made entirely out of smoked meat now.

Occidental Brewing
IT IS A PRETTY GREAT PLACE And April 6th would be great for us too. Of important note: they do not do food. Just excellent, excellent beer. But they're three or four blocks downhill from downtown St. Johns, where there is plenty of food, so we could do a pre-beer eating thing somewhere and then go drink, or drink and then go eat, or something. Or everybody could just plan to eat however they are so inclined and leave it at that. But we would be happy to facilitate a bit of an Eat In St.... [more]

Food for hauling down might include: - burritos/tacos from Taqueria Santa Cruz, which is super good and super cheap and in the back room of a small grocery story/bakery - pizza from Signal Station, if people wanted to organize some sort of shared pie order or whatever - bao from The Boawry, the duck buns and pork buns are crazy amazing and travel pretty well Food for just sitting down and eating where you buy it from but probably not ideal as takeout: - James John Cafe makes a... I should say, all of those being shops right on Lombard within about four blocks of each other, except Bowery which is one block off Lombard behind Signal Station.

We're at the taqueria now, order in and waiting for the food. We'll walk down to Occidental as soon as that's out.

It was a kick! Thanks to everybody for coming out to our neck of the woods. And Sibrax and compartment, thanks for taking the extended tour of some of St. Johns' eateries with us.

Portland OR this Thursday: both please!
Yay woo! Sounds like you're riiiiight near Hedge House on 34th; I haven't been, has anyone else? Lompoc certainly makes some tasty beer. Lucky Lab isn't super far off and is nice but may be a bit on the louder side if they're busy at all.

Potluck and Games
Oh god, I am game though I worry we'll end up killing each other or something.

We've got four folding chairs we could bring, for sure.

SymmyS Awards Show for Outstanding Palindromes of 2012
Woo, palindromery! Point of clarification, though; I'm assuming the judging will have been done remotely already and that Yankovic and Flansburgh et al will not actually be present at the awards ceremony, yeah?

OMSI After Dark - Mythbusters Edition!
Huh! I will try to fix address thing. It is weird.

Superb Owl Sunday is coming up.
We need to clear off Greg's table and play a whole ladder tournament of folded-paper-triangle football and then have a bowl game afterward, which is like a normal game except you do the field goals into a large mixing bowl. Or the movie thing and a pub afterward. I like drinking and deconstructing in a group setting.

Superb owls do, Greg. They basically control Hollywood and the NFL.

Lloyd might be the better choice, since they've got a shitload of parking and aren't really any less accessible than downtown for transit. But that's just me spitballing.

Yeah, I think let's just let the movie angle flop like a souffle. So: beer at the Green Dragon! Should we start that a bit earlier than we otherwise would have, maybe? Say, start at 4:00? Then anyone who was dead set seeing a movie can still go to a movie and find folks there after.
posted to MeFi IRL by cortex at 4:12 PM on February 1, 2013
I have laid my heavy hand over the post text to run with this idea. Hopefully it will be chill inside Green Dragon; with some luck the weather will be nice like it was yesterday and we could even sit outside. Worst case if it turns out to be a weird miserable exception to normal Green Dragon cultural experiences, there are some other places nearby we could organize a march to.
posted to MeFi IRL by cortex at 9:28 AM on February 2, 2013
Possible really-nearby backups include Cascade Brewing, Buckman Brewing, Rogue, or we could even just go crash the bar at Grand Central Bowling.
posted to MeFi IRL by cortex at 9:31 AM on February 2, 2013
Man, I should not make crib notes off google maps without sanity checking that stuff. The aforementioned Rogue and Buckman are both presumably just actual brewing concerns, both of which have beer at Green Dragon (which is a Rogue concern). So yes, I am awfully awake.

Whoops! Map now updated. I apparently sidestepped the normal edit process using modly powers, which is probably why the map didn't get updated originally.

PDX "seasonal holiday of your choice" potluck dinner
I figure if the world ends we'll just switch the location from Greg's house to Sto-vo-kor.
posted to MeFi IRL by cortex at 9:41 AM on December 19, 2012
Don't be ridiculous, Valhalla was just a corruption and co-opting of Sto-vo-kor by the Viking Catholic Church to get cultural buy-in from the indigenous Klingons of the north.

Newbs are great and welcome.

I'm stoked about the Wii U but I worry that mashing up board game meetup and video game meetup may be sort of distracting and confusing. We'd talked about doing a Rock Band meetup at one point, maybe we combine that with a Wii U exhibition so everybody's on board specifically with the whole audiovisual spectacle thing?

posted to MeFi IRL by cortex at 9:37 AM on November 22, 2012
Heya, so, a food idea! Because it seems like gaming for a few hours starting in the afternoon means wanting to eat something at some point. There's a pretty good sandwich shop near the house, East Side Deli, that we could put a group order in for to have cheap convenient tasty food available Saturday afternoon with minimum effort. Sandwiches run six bucks a piece and are pretty darned big; they've also got hotdogs and salads if that's more your thing. So, if folks find that appealing,... [more]

I figure we'll stock a couple six packs and some cola and a bottle of some sort of brown liquor around as a basic firewall, but if you have any particular thirst then bringing something along sounds like a good plan, yeah.

The more the merrier! Welcome to town.
posted to MeFi IRL by cortex at 9:24 PM on November 27, 2012
I feel like planning ahead to the degree that is doable is a decent idea; probably we don't need like TWO DAYS WARNING or anything for a dozen sandwiches but if most folks know what they'll want ahead of time then I can put it the bulk of the order earlier in the day on Saturday and then just call in the stragglers as a manageable one-off on short notice? I dunno, I'm probably overthinking it.

posted to MeFi IRL by cortex at 4:06 PM on November 30, 2012

Further house description if its useful: green with dark green trim, front door is bright orange and does not actually face the street, long skinny driveway (not the neighbors' wide short one). Folks are welcome to park in the driveway, it'll hold two or three cars depending.
