Ask post: Fun with a purpose?
Everyone here has such great ideas! Here's one more - try housekeeping. You can make decent money and it ranges from medium to hard labor - depends on how much time/energy you put into it. If you get going and have a range of clients/houses to clean every day or so, you'll be amazed at how fit you can get. Bring along your iPod for even more fun while cleaning.

Ask post: Hunting the elusive toe ring
Claire's, in both the Petaluma Outlet Mall and in the Terra Linda Mall. Target in Rohnert Park had tons of toe rings and anklets the last time I looked, like in mid-May.

Ask post: How to heal a sunburn?
What everyone else said, aloe aloe aloe, plus cool compresses, showers, and ibuprofen. Then try carefully applying Bag Balm on the blisters. It will help with both the pain and the healing skin. Good luck!

Ask post: cold fiction for the hot summer?
The Snow Queen by Joan D. Vinge chilled my blood with its sense of unending winter, although the reader knows that in 150 years, summer, and the Summer Queen, will come again. It's fantasy and very-well written. I highly recommend it.

Ask post: What can I expect from my colonoscopy?
Mine featured excellent twilight sedation that made me giggle a lot afterwards and I probably looked like a drunk, staggering out to the parking lot, propped up between my husband and my daughter. Tee hee hee! Also, word from my Mom, get baby wipes and use them instead of toilet paper. You'll be glad you did!

Ask post: Seeking advice to relieve major breastmilk pumping discomfort.
If I may ease your and "the Mom's" minds, let me say that my daughter went through the very same thing. She and her baby are now using formula and bottles and it really has increased her enjoyment of her child, as well as the child's ability to obtain nourishment. I have reassured her that she has nothing to feel guilty about, as she and her child made every effort to breastfeed, however, it was just that her anatomy got in the way. Now her baby and she are on a pretty good schedule at... [more]

Ask post: How to throw a "high on life" party?
Playing music in front of an audience. The frisson of terror that turns into a groove with the audience swaying along to the beat - rapt on every word, every downstroke, um, yeah. Yeah, yeah, yeah!

Ask post: What makes a mom great?
My mother instilled in me the values that I've managed to pass on to my children, including a sense of curiosity about the world, an appreciation for acts of kindness and a strong moral code. I love my mother and I feel that my daughter and son love me, too, for which I am very grateful.

Ask post: Long blond hair and beautiful blue eyes; what's her breed(s)?
Bichon frise is what it looks like to me, taz. Our neighbor had one for like 18 years, named Sam, and when (old) Sam died, she actually got a new one, and called him Sam also! The one pictured on the Wiki page is a lot whiter than the Sams, both old and new, they're more the color of what you posted. What's different is those light blue eyes, that reminds me of huskies.

Ask post: Did your family sing together?
Lots of music around my house growing up, and I distinctly remember singing Christmas carols as a family. My mom was a church choir director and organist and my dad sang enthusiastically along. My husband and I played guitar and mandolin, respectively and sang with lots of folk-music-oriented folks for years in the '70's so our kids heard and sang along to lots of music growing up. I sang Beatles songs, "Happiness Runs" (nice that someone else heard that too!) and all sorts of silly... [more]

Ask post: Curly hair care
I have wavy-to-curly brown-gray hair also. I shampoo and use conditioner 3x per week, and do as others have recommended; I bend over and run my fingers through my hair to loosen the top strands. I use Redken Fresh Curls Anti Frizz Shiner and various kinds of mousse, avoiding the roots and the crown of my head.

Ask post: The ups and downs of teaching adolescents?
I love the passion that teens can ignite at the drop of a hat. I love how caring they are of their peers. I love how the kids I work with for the most part, love and respect their parents, brothers and sisters and grandparents.

I hate how cruel teens can be to one another. I hate how inward-turned they can be sometimes, to the detriment of mostly themselves but also of what's going on around them. I mourn the loss of confidence I see in teen girls in the early years and... [more]

Ask post: Getting sober in a drinking relationship
It's difficult, but possible. As a person who is getting sober, you learn to avoid activities that promote drinking, and you find that includes just about every party, work/school social function, unfortunately. However, these occasions do go on and you have to steel yourself to the fact that although others can drink at them, you can not. It's not easy at first but it gets easier with time, until you learn that you can have a good time without alcohol. You also learn to choose which events you... [more]

Ask post: Tasty whole-wheat pasta?
We like and use a lot of Trader Joe's penne and rigatoni but not their fettucine so much. I've also found that the sooner you can get your sauce or topping on it and eat it, the better, as it has better mouth feel when it's still hot to warm.

Ask post: Recovery in Texas without AA or 12 Steps?
Can you get into a hospital-based program? We took part in an intervention performed on an alcoholic friend years ago and his treatment counselor cautioned participants at the time to not mention that the person should "accept Jesus as your personal savior," "get right with the Lord," or any other similar platitudes. I will never forget her final words on the subject, when she addressed one of the participants who got sober and wanted to involve "the Lord" in the... [more]

Ask post: Would-be intestinal bacteria snob seeks counsel
I always use L. acidophilus concurrently with any antibiotic regimen. It works quite well to help repopulate the "friendly flora." Lots of people like to eat it in yogurt, but I just use capsules or pills, obtainable at Trader Joe's as well as many drug stores.

Ask post: Scratch mine, and I'll scratch yours!
Are you eating or drinking something new? Have you changed or added laundry products or body washing products? Once you've seen a doctor, you may find that trying Claritin or a generic equivalent over-the-counter, non-sleepy antihistamine may help. Good luck!

Ask post: Why is McEnroe stopping me from picking up iron?
Listen to caddis, who knows of what s/he speaks. The shots are a merciful relief from the agonizing pain, but unfortunately last a short time. I've had enough cortisone shots in my very painful elbows to have the flesh under the skin atrophy and it's just now coming back (and if you think that sounds creepy, you should have seen it!). The better alternative for long-term relief, for me, was with my physical therapist and I've had much better luck warding off the pain when it gets bad, thanks to... [more]

Not SF-ist. Just sayin' - I live on the north coast about 60 miles N of SF. Right now the wind is blowing in about 35 MPH gusts and it's not raining too hard. I usually make one trip to town for supplies every Friday but decided to go today instead. :-) I bought batteries and Sterno for our little camp stove and thank goodness, canned soup was on sale. Ask post: kiss and told. Now what?
Look at this as an opportunity to ask yourselves, and each other, the really hard questions. Does she really love you or is she afraid of the ultimate committment? Are you better off with her or without her? Do it now, before the wedding. Then, when you have some answers, proceed like this. It's either full-speed-ahead with your lives together, and work on forgiveness, because it won't be the first time you'll be called upon to exercise it. Or, call it off and start healing. Because it's easier... [more]

Ask post: Pot Paranoia
I used to call my experience with that feeling "paranoia" and for me, it came from trying to "maintain" (a word we old-timers used back in the day) the illusion of straightness when being around others who were straight (i.e.: "they can't tell if I'm high, can they?") since we were afraid (to the point of being paranoid?) of the possibility of being busted. There was also the self-examination process that I'd go through, where I would go back over days and minutes... [more]

Ask post: Decent temporary home away from home in Oakland
I had a very nice 3 day, 2 night stay at the La Quinta in Hayward, near the Hayward Airport. It had a microwave and mini fridge, which I found very attractive for eating in although they had a nice cafe-ish restaurant, where they served free snacks around 5pm. It had a weight room, too and was reasonably near Winton Blvd and some huge mall, should you need shopping. I stayed there for a business seminar and was very comfortable.... [more]
