Who made the Metafilter pins?

A coupla years ago, a very nice Mefi user, whose user name began with A, (I think) made Metafilter pins and he sent me some. I can't for the life of me remember his name. Does anyone remember who made the neat-o Metafilter pins?

How do I pack for air travel these days?

Dear seasoned travelers of MeFi, help me plan for my trip to PDX. I haven't flown in a while and am a bit nervous about the whole airport security thing. I want to avoid issues with the TSA and airline workers, so if you would, please give me suggestions on packing.

Shark bite photography By their contributions ye shall know them.... Metafilter member Tonebarge is um, enjoying a media blitz after being in the right place at the right time to take photos of a shark bite victim at Dillon Beach. DIY wireless camera remote

How to make your own wireless camera remote. Man buys Minolta 5-D, can't find a remote for less than $30 on eBay; can't find any that are wireless; goes to an electronics store, buys the parts; makes his own wireless remote; then takes pictures of himself skating, using the remote!
I love diy stories like this. (Warning: popups at the linked site.)

Does anyone remember a thread in AskMe, around the holidays, discussing a wall-mounted monitor-type thingie that allowed you to load it up with your pictures, say from your computer and view them as a slide show? Did I imagine that or did it really occur, and didn't Mathowie even mention a product like that that he knew about? Not knowing what such a thing is called makes it very difficult to Google for it successfully; does anyone have a clue about what I'm trying to find?

Advent calendars 2005

Advent calendars 2005. Back when the internets were very young, people began combining a wonderful old holiday tradition, the Advent calendar, with the latest in communications, the internet, and thus it was that interactive Advent calendars were born. This one (requires Flash) was the first one I ever saw and here are some other of my favorites: Leslie Harpold's and Tibi and Beens. Want more? Check Google.

How do they rate websites, anyway?

What/who is silktide and how do they get these results? I submitted Metafilter to Silktide on a whim and now I'm wondering what tools/rubric(s) are these folks using and how do they arrive at their results?

I am taking a brain-painful networking class (hint: it's all about the routers, baby!) and the studying is intense. It's hard, but I'm holding my own. I see questions here on AskMe that bring really cool answers from lots of folks, with a lot of repeat answerers, which leads me to ask, How Did You Learn What You Know About Computers/the Internet? Was it in school? Did you apprentice with someone who had m4d sk1lz? Did you teach yourself? Other?

Do any MeFites have ideas/experience/recommendations for a way to archive VHS tapes to DVD? So far my Google-fu has turned up software that requires having to add video cards to computers, plus a DVD burner, etc. My work would prefer a product that is a stand-alone thing that you can pop in a tape, then convert it to DVD and pop out a DVD. Is there such a thing?

Red vs. Blue teaches about life

Want to know what the difference is between real life and the internet? The funny folk at Red vs. Blue would be happy to demonstate. (Warning: 22.125MB Quicktime .mov file but worth the wait, I thought. The Red vs. Blue site also offers a DivX download.) Metafilterians may enjoy the Political Section, where they do political discussions as badly as we do. One naughty word may make the audio NSFW in some locations. Seen at Bifurcated Rivets.

Silly, fun music link. Stuff like this is what I consider the best of the Web, even though it took a loooong time to download over dial-up, as it's a 34.8 MB mpg. You lucky broadband folks may enjoy it more. (Seen at Bifurcated Rivets)

Shockwave fun.

A new Samarost-style game brought to us by Amanita, the same folks who authored Samarost. You can see the same style, although this one is actually a band advertisement and is much shorter and easier than Samarost.

I need a version of Adobe Acrobat to encode pdf files that will work on Mac OS 9.x. From what I've googled so far, that seems to be Adobe Acrobat 5, but when I go to the websites listed, I can't seem to find tech specs/product reviews that confirm that it actually works in Mac OS 9.x machines. Does anyone have any familiarity with this product and can you confirm that it does actually work in Mac OS 9.x systems? Even better, do you have a source from which I can buy a new, full edition? Price is not necessarily an object....

I hang my head in shame as I post this, but here goes: in my zealous effort to eliminate browser helper objects on 2 Windows 2000 Pro Dells in our computer lab, I somehow seem to have eliminated IE and Mozilla's ability to browse, as well. I can ping our webserver so I know they can get online, but I keep getting "unable to resolve this (or any other) web page" errors. Do I now have to reinstall IE or wipe the hard drive and reinstall Windows to make this work? Or....

I just got another Windoze update. After ignoring them for all these years, I got "Blasted" in August, so have started downloading and accepting them all ever since. This one, from Tech Bulletin MS04-003 says the vulnerability is a "Buffer Overrun in MDAC Function Could Allow Code Execution (832483)." I want to know, before I install this one, is it necessary? Is it always/ever safe to trust Microsoft?

Mr. Lynsey got the live Led Zeppelin DVD for Christmas and we have been enjoying it ever since. In one of the concerts on the 2nd DVD, it looks to me as if Jimmy Page is wearing a Nudie suit. Any rock historians, Led Zep freaks or Nudie aficionados know if Jimmy Page ever wore a Nudie suit onstage?

My son moved to Portland over a year ago from the SF Bay Area and misses the radio choices we have here, especially for techno. I googled for info but am not sure how current the information I found is. Does anyone have suggestions for techno radio stations in the greater metro Portland/Seattle/Vancouver area? He drives a lot between Portland and Seattle for his work and would appreciate the call sign as well as the number.

Too many Christmas lights?

Is there such a thing as too many Christmas lights? I love seeing lavish displays of lights at Christmas time. Some folks like a few old-fashioned Christmas lights and some like to deck the halls in a blaze of glory (this one boasts 700,000 lights). And how much does it cost to run a fabulous display?

Matrix 3 sucks

I feel so burned. I can't believe I (called in sick to go see) went to Matrix Revolutions. IMO, they shouldn't have made it into a franchise, as the first Matrix was just fine as a stand-alone movie.

I want to break a rule here and propose a shoutout - a cheerleader post, if you will indulge me. I note a immense upward jump in the quality of both MeFi and MeTa posts and comments, with a corresponding downward jump in noise, trolling and trash. I note comments by Matt have a more relaxed tone than in the past few weeks. I see discussions kept to a mostly civil if not downright respectful tone. I observe efforts running the gamut from herculean to humorous by members like frykitty, y6y6y6, waxy, riffola, adrianhon, et al, to help make this wondrous place ever more enjoyable and user friendly. I want to say thank you, to everyone. Baring our, er, souls, for peace.

Peace protest really takes off. I live in West Marin, where some people take their peace protests fairly seriously, and this has been the topic of conversation pretty much in every little town that the Point Reyes Light covers since Thursday's issue of the paper came out. I can just see the White House staff and Dubya's dad when they get a load of this. "See, those people in Marin County are all nuts, just like John Walker Lindh!"

Find yourself using IM shortcuts in your everyday writing? According to the article, many teachers are seeing IM shortcuts such as u, r, 2, @, etc. turning up in students' papers. Some think the IM influence contributes to literacy and others worry about the death of handwriting as well as normal written English. Wonder how many students have ended papers with the odious kthxbye?

Actually, San Mateo County has had an eye on them for quite a while, but didn't make a move until they were sure that the couple's treehouse fell within county parks jurisdiction, rather than state jurisdiction.

I just finished e-filing my taxes and I want to tell you about it! It has been, without qualification, the worst Internet experience I've ever had. The Quicken/Intuit software was confusing, my ISP and/or the Quicken server timed out and I had to re-log on about 20 times and the software requires far more intrusive answers (like email address & phone number) than any paper forms I've ever used. Anyone have a good experience e-filing or one more like mine?

Eww, what's that smell? It's kind of sad, really, a poor little creature, velella, also known as "by-the-wind sailor" that spends its life cruising the wavetops, is unceremoniously stranded all along the west coast beaches, due to a shift in the spring winds. It happens in my town, Dillon Beach, every couple of years but they're really thick this year.
