Post moderation. I can empathize with feelings of attachment to posts which you submit. When you post as often as troutfishing has in his own post (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11), however, I think you are overdoing things.

In Windows XP version 2002, using either Mozilla 1.1 or IE6, renders Metafilter with really big letters that make reading the site difficult. Anyone got any solutions?

I don't like when people decide they can abuse metafilter by posting controversial soapbox rants. You know you're going to get a bunch of comments, and you know people will have their feelings hurt or their blood boiling, but are these good things? What good do you contribute?

how about a textarea on the post-a-thread page to allow you to optionally post the first comment on the thread? reading rich's comment on how not everyone wants to write up such a comment with word or notepad beforehand, it seems like this feature could be useful. no one jokes about where's the "more inside" text, and the ease of use in posting that first, explanatory comment may help in keeping FPPs from getting too large.

tag fixing gone awry. the culprit appears to be a colon inserted rather than a double quote mark in the html source for an href=url key-value pair, causing the tag fixer to become very confused and add an extra double-quote mark -- one for each of two a href tags -- at the end of the tags. you'll have to view source to see what the post was actually meant to be and where the problem is.

IE has a huge, gaping hole that allows executable files to be downloaded and run on the computers of browsers.

Pynnonen revealed that the bug lies in IE's processing of Internet addresses and "header" information that tells the browser what type of file it is handling. The flaw is particularly dangerous because it can be exploited using ordinary Web page code, without help from JavaScript or other scripting programs, he said.

thanks to the wonder of non-disclosure agreements, we won't know the precise nature of the bug (yet), but this one sounds bad.

(such as here, here, and here.) other patterns are out there, i'm sure. (how about "giant comment punctuates end or near end of further commentary"?)

It's gametime. What's going down at the metafilter basketball league on yahoo, ID #95325 password "filtermeta"? For one, me -- to the floor, hard. Come and see the happy mondays play. Play basketball that is! We'll wheeze and puff so hard you'd think we were blowing down your house instead of trying to grab the rebounds of our weak 9 footers.

thanks, everyone, who came by #mefi last night. we had 7 or 8 people on at once, which is a new record i think (!). i'd like to ask anyone who has an opinion: should we meet at a specific night of the week (mondays, for example), or should it be open to whenever you would like to come by? it is possible to agree on a specific time (9pm CST, earlier, later...)? what do you guys think?

Misspellings. Not just on metafilter, but...

Misspellings. Not just on metafilter, but throughout the net, I've seen the words "Taliban," "Taleban," and "Talebin" used to describe the majority rulers of Afghanistan. I've also seen "Bin Laden," "Bin Ladin," and "Ben Laden," as well as both "Osama" and "Usama" to describe the alleged terrorist mastermind. Have you noticed any others? Which is the right spellings for either, by the way?

Once upon a time, dublab was lamented on metafilter. Cry no more: they have released a CD (which may have been announced way back when). In my URB magazine, they say: "Freeways is an easy, abstract-leaning release to have handy while traversing the 405, the 110, the 10 freeways...or down any side roads that ultimately lead to more halcyon places." (URB issue 87, sept 2001, page 158 - emphasis theirs.)

Browsing the recently updated list of sites on...

Browsing the recently updated list of sites on Blogger, as I occasionally do, I noticed this site on the list. I was expecting a girl with a sarcastic take on life, or a similar cliché; instead, I got an actual porn site. (With plenty of html and blogger tag errors.) Is this simply the natural progression of things, or something dastardly and the... erm... artificial progression of things?

where do you guys go to publicize your projects?...

where do you guys go to publicize your projects? not that i'm a media slut or anything, but i've lately been writing some python scripts that would do away with the need to use a service such as Blogger or even GreyMatter. i get maybe a couple of hits every now and then, and those probably from blogger's last 10 updated list. if i stop using blogger, the one or two emails i do get every month or so will stop.

sorry if this seems like a sort of taboo subject, but i'm honestly curious. do ya just google? what sorts of resources are there for people to search for weblogs or publicize new ones?

should linking to another site be contingent on...

should linking to another site be contingent on that user's permission? this question is an old one, mostly debated on slashdot regarding linking to DeCSS sites being ruled illegal. many said that was an impingement of their 1st amendment rights. as a site that relies on linking to other websites, i think it's a relevant issue.

i never read many of the comments on slashdot about the subject because there were so many, and perhaps this has already been debated here by others. but the notion of a site being "slashdotted" came to mind. the costs of bandwidth are, to me, a perfectly legit reason to sue another site over being unknowingly linked to or at least linked without prior approval. so what do you guys think?

i know that mefi is not the sort of site where you can expect a gigabyte's worth of bandwidth to come from one link here, but i think it's a problem that may need to be addressed. has anyone ever been slashdotted here? how much have you had to pay? if you could, would you want to sue to recouperate the costs of being slashdotted?

i have this tendancy to sit on mefi's home page...

i have this tendancy to sit on mefi's home page and just reload every now and then for new comments. (am i alone?) anyway, i notice that when you leave the site and revisit, you get a different tally of what comments are "new", but when you stay and reload, what was new last time is still considered a "new" comment (with newer ones added onto what was there previously).

my idea is to change the code such that when you reload the page, the "new" comments for a user are updated as when you leave and revisit the site. i don't know the algorithm you're using matt, so i don't know if this even feasible or not, or if anyone else would want the behavior to change.

even before i knew about matt's having been
laid off, i was planning on posting this to metatalk; it now has added applicability, though.

i need a job, but i have no experience in all of this crap i see postings about: websphere, sybase, etc. so here's my question: what do you guys all think that a programmer / web designer needs to succeed in the current market? any good pointers on where to learn or what to read about the junk?

Over the past couple of days, it's occurred to me...

Over the past couple of days, it's occurred to me that mefi does not scale particularly well when large numbers of comments are posted to a thread. I think that loading 100 comments or more makes for a fairly unwieldy webpage, and probably puts a lot of strain not just on the source database for the comments, but also the bandwidth of mefi. This inefficiency is particularly bad when it comes to such popular threads at the Kaycee ones that have been recently posted, as many people will be accessing it.

I think that comments should be cut up into some slightly more managable chunks. That is, rather than have all of the comments on the same page, they should be split up into groups of 25 or 30 comment pages; clicking on the "new comments" will take you to the correct page, thus bypassing most older comments, and the correct id on the page.

What do you think?

i have a question for you guys. what is adequate reference info in quoting from another website? is just a link back enough? would it matter if the page is primarily composed of quotes versus sparing use?

well, i think it's unrealistic to expect that...

well, i think it's unrealistic to expect that there is such a thing as an ultimate format or anything of the sort. not to be inflammatory, but times change. fashions change. designs change. i guess that when you get down to it, people eventually get bored with whatever's been overplayed, and move on. which is sort of how top 40s music works, if you think about it.

and, just like in the music industry, the sites that last will be those interesting and innovative sites like k10k that are constantly evolving and constantly adding new and interesting content. the sites that won't are the ones which are difficult to distinguish from the next weblog.
