Ask post: I have no real friends, and yet I'm perfectly happy, am I weird??
You sound completely happy and fulfilled. If you're not, and if you find yourself feeling emotions of envy towards people who 'have loads of friends' and are 'out having fun', then you need to do something about it. Otherwise, be you. There's nothing fundamentally wrong or even uncommon about the way you're living your life.

There have been times when I've been in a similar state of affairs, and been perfectly happy with it. There have also been times when I've been in a... [more]

Ask post: Free Violin Music for They Might Be Giant's Istanbul (Not Constantinople)?
I had a go at writing it out for you: istanbul-violin.png.

The crazy intro and the double-stopping in the instrumental is very approximate, but the rest of it is pretty straightforward.

Yeah, don't put stuff in your back pocket, it's the perfect place to get it stolen from.

Start wearing a jacket. That brings you at least four more pockets. And you'll look stylin'.

Ask post: help me tell cute classmate I am seeing someone.
You're worried that you're flirting with her, but your list of actual behaviour basically sums up to being friendly towards her and being invited round to her house once. That still sounds like just friends to me.

Don't stress out about it. People get crushes on people who are unavailable all the time. It sucks, but it's just part of being human. And, unless you are very blatantly leading her up the garden path, then that's her problem to deal with.

Ask post: fast, solid, non-lame name
It sounds like you just want some commodity web hosting with high bandwidth. Dreamhost is doing a 500 GB storage, 5 TB monthly bandwidth hosting deal for $10.95 a month plus $49.95 setup at the moment (with discounts if you pay in advance). You'd be able to use your own domain name, and I'm pretty certain you'd be able to set up FTP access to suit your needs.

Ask post: What constitutes a Commingled recyclable?
I don't think there's a standard for this. Different local authorities collect slightly different sets of things in their 'comingled' collection, so you'll need to ask (at least in my experience in the UK). It's unlikely that you can just throw anything in there; there are usually rules.

You're in for a world of hurt if you just try to dive straight into trying to read and understand existing real-world scripts.

Ask post: WHOIS that? It's nobody...
Nominet specifically have an 'opt-out' system for domains registered to individuals, which will remove your personal information from the WHOIS results.

You should be able to just log in to the Nominet site using the details you received with your registration certificate, and choose the 'opt-out' option.

I'm very surprised that the person you spoke to at Nominet didn't mention this.

Saying "cell phone" instead of "mobile" (MOE'-byle) would have tipped me off right there.

Unless they were simply, y'know, using local terms for things in order that people would understand them more easily. Which seems a reasonable thing to do.

Ask post: I don't want to make New Year's Resolutions. I want to actually get stuff done!
David Seah has this year been trying out and blogging about an alternative mindset to New Year's Resolutions which he calls Groundhog Day Resolutions. The idea is that, instead of making empty resolutions right after a busy, frazzled period of the year, wait until the 2nd of February (Groundhog Day), and make your resolutions then. Then on 3/3, and 4/4, and 5/5, etc., have a review of how you're doing.

It's a bit cheesy, and not really so different from making resolution... [more]

Ask post: Can a Paddy buy the Nokia7500Prism?
Buying the phone direct from Nokia UK costs £159. So £140 is in the price region where you'd expect it to be unlocked, yes.

Basically, as long as you're buying a new one, and you're not buying it from a network (contract or pay-as-you-go, since some networks lock some of their pay-as-you-go phones as well), then you're good. The key phrases to check for are 'handset only' and 'sim free'.

Or, of course, just ask the vendor straight out whether... [more]

Ask post: Is there an RSS reader that can display comments?
This is unlikely to do with the RSS reader. The contents of an RSS feed (i.e. whether it shows the full post or an excerpt, whether it shows all associated links or just the main article link) are determined by the site in question. So if the MetaFilter RSS feed doesn't include a comments link, then it won't show up in any RSS reader. The RSS reader isn't stripping anything out -- it's not there in the first place.

So, basically, I think you're out of luck.

Ask post: Whether and how to buy a Macbook Pro coming from the land of windows and linux
I treat my 17" Macbook Pro with little respect. It does fine. Quality's about as good as you're going to get with a laptop. Sure, there'll be some duff individual units, but I don't think there are any systemic issues.

It gets hot, yes, but not burning hot. Uncomfortable hot at times, but only if the processor is maxed out. I think the latest models are better with this.

No compatibility issues with US/EU, as far as I'm aware, apart from the... [more]

A hacky solution (nicking some code from here):

In /wp-admin/edit-form-advanced.php, about line 74, you'll see some <fieldset>s that represent each of the sidebar boxes. If you add:
<?php
$current_role = $wpdb->prefix . 'capabilities';
$current_user->role = array_keys($current_user->$current_role);
$current_role = $current_user->role[0];
if ($current_role == 'author' ||

$current_role = $current_user->role[0];
if ($current_role == 'author' || $current_role == 'editor') {

Ask post: Help me identify Bach organ music
Bach's organ output can be divided into various kinds of works. Broadly speaking:

pairs of toccata/prelude/fantasia and fugue;
various individual fantasias/fugues/etc.;
chorale preludes;
chorale variations;
sonatas; and
arrangements of concertos.

Most of the interesting counterpoint is in the toccatas/preludes/fantasias/fugues, but a lot of those would seem to be of the character that... [more]

and you want to replace it with:
