Likely Small, Perhaps Difficult Meet-up in the Big Easy
Small and difficult? I'm there. We should probably decide what we want to do. Do we want to drink or do we want to eat? Or do we want to drink and eat?
(As for suggestions, we should look no further than MetaFilter's own chuq: So, where y’all wanna eat?.)

Not that you need a reason to drink in New Orleans, but Friday is the birthday of MiguelCardoso, and if that's not a reason to raise a few, I don't know what is.

I'll see you all in hell first.
(I'll be there, unless some tragedy befalls me.)

Photos.
It was fantastic to meet all of you. I sincerely hope my terrible funeral stories didn't give anyone nightmares. Oh, and radioamy has invited all of MetaFilter to crash at her place next Mardi Gras...so, we got that going for us.
Say "Prada!"

Metafilter is like the Freebird of the Internet - devotees of its righteousness will never be open to change.
MetaFilter: Freebird of the Internet.
Now that's a tagline that desperately needs to be added to the frontpage rotation.

Not About Tim Russert
Gold star for farishta. He has summed up all of my feelings about Obit-threads in a nutshell.
* Immediate notification without padding.
* Solemn respect.
* Helpful anecdotes.
* A bit of respectful disrespect.
* No whining about why we do this.
Thank you.

27: Bigger than a breadbox
Hey! Glad you liked the teeshirt, Jessamyn. I was walking out the door of the restaurant and saw that and thought, "How could I not buy that?"
Great podcast. 27? Holy moses!

Heh. The Wii Fit reminded me this morning that it was my wife's birthday. Then, when she got on to do her exercises, the Wii Fit Board Icon was wearing a birthday hat and it shot fireworks and streamers for her. Neat.

I have nothing to trade. But I like free stuff. Send me free stuff, and I'll send you a postcard with a confusing message on it. That's my best offer.

I would like a confusing post card, but I want to receive it without first sending anything.
Fine, fine. Email me your address.

Who are the people in your contacts list?
Also, clicking on "Activity" leads only to a long list of "ColdChef had a comment with 80-someodd favorites" and "homonculus had a post with 70-someodd favorites" through and through. Can you make my contacts more interesting? Thanks.
I can take off my pants if you'd like.

Paging Dr. ColdChef.
FWIW: I've been directly contacted about two dozen times in the past two years by MetaFilter members with questions about funeral and death-related issues. Most of the time, members email me directly or MeFiMail me. I've been "paged" by email to a few AskMe questions. On a few occasions, I've talked on the phone to MetaFilter members who have had a death in the family within the hour who call me and say, "Oh, god. What the hell do I do now?... [more]

Birthday MetaThreads are indeed a bad idea. Unless they are for Matt. For he is wise and someone might give him another camera. (Am I remembering that correctly?)

Besides I think one of the things that helps make Metafilter great is we have to take people on their words rather than any accidents of their births.

Reading Slashdot these days is like visiting the IT guy at work. He's infuriatingly smug and cares passionately about stuff you don't care about, and views your lack of interest as further confirmation of his intellectual superiority. Enjoy.
Ouch.
