Fuelly
This is a cool site. I've been keeping track of mileage/fuel data in the little notebook that came with the truck when I bought it from a grandpa out in the sticks. It's been fun continuing the pages and pages of his neat handwritten notes, but I'm looking forward to migrating to this site.
Fuelly has a forum—an odd mixture of MeFi and MeTa with a splash of BB confusion—in which every one of the feature requests here has been mentioned and addressed. The... [more]

What is this thing that, simply by its existence—no, by the knowledge of its existence and propagation thereof—prevents or obstructs similar existences? I call it the Jim Jones Performance Potential Recognition Conundrum, and it pains me so.

There's a list (with a dumb name) of many random MeFi pages on the wiki.

I've started keeping these links on my profile page.
Yeah, profile pages are handy for that sort of thing. You know, though, rtha, that if you've got Twitter listed as one of your social networks it'll display that link to all MeFi Twitters below your most recent twitter. Same for the Flickr (linked above) and Last.fm bits, too.

Sorry about that; I was going for statuesque minimalism at the time and included the description-type stuff in the link mouse-overs. As much as I'd love to be able to write engaging copy for all my posts—like so many of my favorite MeFi posters—I'm inevitably struck with writer's block on that damned New Post page.

Well, this doesn't match up with the 'silent film star' nor 'British humor' restraints, but the Estelle Getty obit thread has YouTube video of her Clueless spoof wherein she acts about 70 years younger than her actual age.

OK, 25 minutes. I've made the drive from here (I live right behind Barragan's) to LAX and back a number of times. The freeway route can be horrendous during rush hour, but it only adds 10-15 minutes if you click the little 'avoid freeways' box and go that way.

Well that was interesting. Put a little twist on the term 'couch surfing'. I hope all is well with the rest of you LA-fites. The thing with the quakes down here in LA is that they seem to happen regularly enough that I'm not nervous about a 'big one.' I was flabbergasted watching the news afterward. The newscasters and city officials seemed to relish reminding everyone that this was 'just a precursor' and 'THE BIG ONE IS STILL COMING, NEXT TEN YEARS!' Talk about scaremongering!... [more]

2 or the 5 should work, as long as you end up on the 2 as it ends. Then make sure you get off Glendale before you get to Sunset, use either Scott or Montana to jog over to Echo Park Blvd. I'll be there in a few minutes.

"similar questions" as a search tool
Yep, mudpuppie is right, it's using a combination of tags and categories to come up with suggestions. It won't be perfect, but it's a way to point out possibly similar questions in the archive. We started with "Possibly Related Questions" as the headline, but ended up thinking that was too wishy-washy. (Though it is a more accurate title.) I've found questions with more specific tags get more accurate related questions—to a point. If something has completely unique tags that... [more]

Hubbard tested, Xenu approved!
But I believe that Scientologists have the right to pray and to pay and to serve and to work and to love and to cherish because I know they would want the same for me.
Nobody's debating that. MetaFilter is a privately owned business, however, and the members of it reserve the right to try to convince mathowie to refuse service to anyone they see fit. If he makes the decision on his own, well again, that's quite literally his own business.

I am responding to blazecock pileon's sad and cowardly suggestion that somehow I am a Scientologist.
Wouldn't it just be easier to say, "No, I'm not a Scientologist?"
Either way, parmanparman, the crux of what I said is that your argument for equal treatment of beliefs systems doesn't apply to MetaFilter, because MetaFilter is a privately owned business. I wish I could say that it's stated somewhere that MetaFilter... [more]

OK, I know this is touchy to bring up because ostensibly we're talking about a life well-lived and over, but is this really MetaFilter-related? I would argue no, just because it has been posted to MetaFilter in the past does not make it MetaFilter-related. It is Randy Pausch-related, life-and-death-related, Last Lecture-related, and news-related. Those are the tags that are attached to the two MeFi posts. Well, this is the bureaucratic classification section of the site, Mike. MetaTalk is here for all of us to discuss site policy and procedure, so while you're welcome to continue to ask us to stop talking I think it's wholly appropriate to discuss where on the site we should be discussing the death of Randy Pausch right here.
