MeFi post: fotoopa and his Amazing Flying Insects
I think the green laser is for setting the focus plane. The IR laser/sensors (which form an invisible X on the focal plane) are to trigger the flash and special shutter.

MeFi post: Information Design + Politics = WIN! (Hopefully)
Dammit, I was going to come in here and brag about my $16.68 and low UID, but user frakking 1 had to come in and ruin my fun.

Best of luck to you, Sean. I'll be looking for this type of progressive forward-looking government in my state - hopefully you can make a difference in yours.

Fuck, the guy was only 71.
So many cunts wanted him silenced.

MeFi post: Cluck. Cluck. (Thwack)
I bought four "pullets" from a local farmer who had free-range chickens. Two turned out to be roosters, so once they started crowing and fighting, I had to do the deed. This blog was tremendously helpful for this first time (sub)urban chicken farmer.

I now have two laying hens, and two pullets, bought pre-sexed from the local feed store.

The best advice from the blog (other than the chicken tractor - something I built for mine) is the... [more]

MeFi post: Don't lose your load, Good Buddy
When I was but a lad, my family was vacationing in the Smoky Mountains, and we were witness to the results of an accident involving a CANDY TRUCK which strew its' remains across the road and shoulder.

My parents wouldn't stop.

I never forgave them this transgression.

Mastercheddar - according to This recent story, contractors with cost-plus accounting usually secure the highest bid because it makes them more money through their government contract.

MeFi post: Hanna-Barbera never did this.
I don't know if this was alluded to in the original Russian, but the reason for most of these "clones" is that they were all based on the same original rotoscoped character studies.

The already choreographed, filmed, traced motion of characters was then used as templates.

Since it was very expensive to do those initial rotoscopes, using them over and over with different characters overlaid onto the motion probably saved a bunch of money,... [more]

Gorgor, I have no proof other than what I've read on the intarwebs - the Wikipedia article I linked above and others say that Disney used rotoscoping with Snow White and Cinderella, so those high(er)-budget productions seem to be the sources for some of the "cloning of actions" (re-use of roto plates) in some of the other (lower budget) clips listed on the Russian site.

I think you're misinterpreting what I wrote a bit, though. I'm definitely not belittling the... [more]

MeFi post: One key to rule them all
I know a friend who is downloading ~15GB .ts (transport streams) or .mkv (matroska video format) files of current 1080i and 1080p movies from newsgroups. He says each has only taken a few hours to download. He's playing them back with VLC on a Mac Mini Intel Core Duo to a Samsung 61" 1080p DLP rear projection system.

Granted, most of these are caps from HD cable channels, but he's seen some which are labeled as HD-DVD rips.

They look and... [more]

One of these installed in a rack on a show I worked on a while back.

Also, here's a picture of one side of an audio system in which there was some discussion as to whether we'd even use all of it, though we ended up using the whole thing.

Large speaker stacks can certainly be visual placebo. Don't forget that the performers can also fit that bill.... [more]

MeFi post: How to think about prescription drugs.
Why isn't it?

Because the HMOs treat their members as liabilities rather than assets and turn the thumbscrews on them as a result.

For instance, I recently went in for surgery (to repair a hernia) and buried deep in the pre-op paperwork was a warning that I should decline all hospital-provided lab work because my HMO was having a dispute with the hospital's lab. Their suggestion was for me to get the lab work done at their... [more]

A net.friend of mine is also blogging his hurricane experiences at his site. He's doing some cool multimedia - video and time-lapse.

I'm in FL myself, though I'm pretty far west. We've had a couple of squalls from feeder bands, but nothing of serious note. Around four or five this morning is when we're supposed to get the actual front.

Posting from just north of Tampa, here.

The winds are starting to pick up, but looks like we're going to luck out compared to Sarasota.

It was looking really bad for a bit there - we were going to catch the brunt of Charley.

I was actually very surprised that the Human Trafficking issue didn't get mentioned here in the Blue when the Justice Department had their convention concerning it here in Florida last month. The brothers Bush and Ashcroft were all there to commit to doing everything they could to squelch modern day slavery.

I worked with the production company which did all of the staging and AV.

Some interesting notes from the Convention:

I still occasionally go to proms - and I do the same thing there that I did at the four proms and four homecomings I went to in high school - work!

Sinner:

Nope, we don't record the evidence. The cameras just run to a switch and then to the screen.

Plus, our cameramen are trained to keep the nasty out of frame so it doesn't find it's way onto the screen.

If we were to record these actions, we'd be liable for criminal child pornography, I'm sure.

Let me be clear, though, I'm not happy about this state of affairs - I don't want my employees or... [more]

A friend of mine just got taken to task for bringing a box cutter through security.

It was a complete accident - he uses the damn things for his job and switched out carry-on cases last minute, leaving one in a pocket of the new case.

Despite being an accident and his record being squeaky clean, he's still got a court date for a misdemeanor charge.

swell,

My friend is most certainly not a dumbass. He flies about 60 days a year, and uses knife-tools every day he is not flying. That simply increases his chances of making a mistake.

I suppose you've never forgotten to take things out of your pockets before you wash your pants? This is the same problem. By the time you get to the security checkpoints, you've already checked the bags you can carry these "weapons" within. In the cases... [more]

So many people have been posting great stuff about this that the mainstream media just hasn't caught onto yet.

MP3 trading is much like the old Cassette days.

I've bought as much, if not more music in spite, or because of widespread mp3 availability. I *know* I've found music I never would have heard before because of mp3.

The people who circumvent copyright by obtaining mp3's they don't own the corresponding album to,... [more]
