Gaudi's Grand Hotel
During his life, Barcelona’s “bauharoque” architect
Antonin Gaudí pioneered imaginative structures with Moorish spires and whimsy likened to Dr Seuss.
(Counter to popular myth, however, the word “gaudy” is not among his legacy.) Several of
his works broke his patrons’ budgets and remain unfinished. Now, Boston artist-architect
Paul Laffoley is attempting to revive Gaudi’s dramatic
1908 New York City concept and give it
a second chance—at the WTC site for which it may originally have been commissioned. His thesis is both an intriguing history walk and a cloying, self-ingratiating, told-you-so piece.

When patriotism wasn't religious
(nytimes) Last night in front of the Texas Capitol in Austin, the 9/11 memorial vigil featured singing of The Lord's Prayer; a Baptist reverend who talked mostly of caution against the "Islamic government of Sudan" and "Islamic mobs" who attacked Christians and Jews in Pakistan; and a Catholic bishop who addressed "our God" over 100 times. Am I wrong to think this amount of religiosity was inappropriate in front of a mixed public crowd at the statehouse? How can we be free when church and state are so intertwined?

Arab world has to change or wither away
Today's editorial from the Daily Star newspaper (Lebanon). "Arab countries are governed by systems and structures designed in another era, one that is never coming back ... It is a recipe for disaster whose results are on display for all to see." Is this just grass-is-greener longing, or a real argument for political and economic reforms?
