How much will I benefit from a Penryn vs non-Penryn MacBook Pro?

Now that the new MacBook Pros are out, I need to decide between buying a new one or getting one of the models they were selling a week ago for $600 less. Given that I'm a video editor/compositor, is a Penryn processor and 512MB of VRAM (vs 256) worth the extra cash?

Visual identity for comedy group

My comedy group needs a new visual identity, including but not limited to a new logo, graphics, website look-and-feel, and general visual aesthetic. We're looking for an experienced, creative designer with a fresh sensibility -- someone who can get a feel for our work and provide us with a complete, distinct visual package that complements what we do. We're based in New York, but you don't have to be. Get in touch and we'll talk!

When can we expect new MacBook Pros?

I've been planning an upgrade to a MacBook Pro for a few months, but had been waiting for MacWorld, assuming that there would be a hardware revision. Now that the keynote has come and gone, sans even a spec bump, how long can I expect to wait for the next revision?

Why does iChat keep disconnecting itself?

iChat has an annoying tendency to periodically disconnect itself from AIM and Jabber, bouncing in the dock to alert me. Reconnecting is always simple, but it's annoying. Anyone else have this problem, and ever find a solution?

What's the best game engine to use for producing footage that's truly royalty-free?

I want to include some fabricated video game footage into a commercial video piece. I don't have the time or the resources to have professional 3D animation done, so I've decided to use a machinima approach towards animation. My main concern, though, is copyright issues -- what's the best game engine to use for producing footage that's truly royalty-free?

Is it fair use to use original clips from Deal or No Deal in a parody?

I'm producing a parody of Deal or No Deal. Since assembling an audience of sufficient size is beyond my means, I am planning to occasionally show audience shots from an original episode of Deal or No Deal. Does this qualify as fair use?

Should I go see Dr. Zizmor, the most heavily advertised dermatologist in NYC?

I still have periodic acne breakouts at the age of 24, and now that I have health insurance I want to see a dermatologist. However, there's a million of them in NYC, and I don't have the time to shop around, so I'm considering going with NYC's most heavily advertised doctor, Dr. Zizmor. Is this a bad idea? Have you or anyone you know ever said, "Thanks, Dr. Zizmor?"

. What's the best workflow for moving between Final Cut Pro and After Effects?

Digital video workflow question: I'm editing a greenscreened music video, and wish to do a rough cut in Final Cut, then move the project into After Effects to do compositing. However, the only automated means of conversion the project is Automatic Duck's plugin, the price of which exceeds my budget. What's the best workflow for moving a sequence between the two applications under these conditions?

How can I separate the two halves of my cocktail shaker?

A few months ago I received a metal cocktail shaker as a gift. The first time I used it with ice, the top and bottom became welded together, presumably because the cold caused the metal to expand. Fast forward to the present -- they're still stuck fast, and I'm sick of gin and tonics. How can I get them apart and get back to mixologizing?

How do I need to change my workflow and FCP configuration to work with 24p DV footage?

DV / Final Cut Pro question: We just upgraded cameras to a Panasonic DVX100B, largely for the ability to shoot in 24P. However, imported footage still appears interlaced in FCP, and it's unclear to me what our new configuration should be. How will we need to change our workflow in order to edit in 24P? Recommend me a CMS for my video podcast

I need a recommendation on what CMS / Blogging system to use for my video podcast. Fellow iTunes micromanagers: Is there a better solution for having one iTunes library in two places at once?

I need to listen to music at work, but my iTunes library is at home. I've set up remote sharing via SSH tunnelling and Bonjour proxying, but I'm a bit of a nazi about playcounts -- I have multiple Smart Playlists set up to create mixes based on play count -- and iTunes doesn't update playcounts for shared tracks when they're played remotely. What's the best means to mirror a webserver directory on a local OS X machine?

I maintain a complex website that I update by hand. (Unfortunately, this is unavoidable.) I want my local directory to be an exact mirror of the site, so that when I alter and modify thirty HTML files and I can simply run a script to copy them instead of FTPing them all by hand, in addition to removing deleted files and downloading any server-side changes made by scripts or other users. What's the best means to do this on OS X?

Jack Chick weighs in on September 11th.

If you're already familiar with the work of Jack Chick, the creator of those amusingly offensive evangelist comic books, you probably know not to take him too seriously -- after all, the threat of being thrown into a giant lake of fire by an angel isn't particularly frightening. Still, when his new tract starts with an image of the smoldering twin towers, and ends with the words, "Bob, now I know that Allah doesn't really love me or even care about any Muslim. But Jesus, the Son of God, does," it's difficult not to worry that this time he's bitten off more than he can chew.

Black Holes Merge. Massive layoffs expected throughout galaxy.

Black Holes Merge. Massive layoffs expected throughout galaxy. Analysts predict big payoffs for the economy, however. "A burst of gravitational waves that could warp the very fabric of space will go a long way towards increasing shareholding value," said one economist. Both black holes had recently suffered a dramatic drop in stock price, and were under the threat of hostile takeover from industry leader Black Hole 86184-B before the merger was announced, which took Wall Street pundits off guard. "Much to our surprise, we found that both were active black holes," Stefanie Komossa of the Max Planck Astro-Economics Institute in Germany, said in a statement. Proponents of big business greeted the announcement with pleasure: "This supports the idea that black holes can grow to enormous masses in the centres of galaxies by merging with other black holes."

In a word, Google's goal is to do important stuff that matters to a lot of people. In pursuit of that goal, we've developed a set of values that drive our work, including one of our most cherished core values: "Don't be evil." The Mailbox Bomber's band sucks , according to Pitchfork Media, one of the most intellectual and pretentious music review sites on the web. "Can you feel the pain?" Helder implores on "Back and Black," a passable stab at Incesticide-era Nirvana, albeit with horrendous lyrics and a gratuitous punk-rock stomp at the coda. "Stop the game!" Helder winces, as though squeezing out a fat one, and we really can feel the pain. Related issue: the band's webpage (also discussed here) has been taken by Angelfire down for "violation of terms of service." Still, Google's cache of the page reveals nothing objectionable. Is Angelfire right to take down the webpage of a nationally known criminal (the first time I can think of that the issue has arisen)? Or do their Terms of Service really have a "no domestic terrorism" clause?
