MeFi post: Ben takes a photo of himself every day.
Hey! My sketch group made this. (I'm not the guy in the video, but I directed and edited most of it.) There's a higher-resolution version on our website, which will also also you step through it frame by frame if you so desire.

bob sarabia, three straight days of shooting -- hundreds and hundreds of photographs -- but counting writing, preparation, and editing, about two and a half weeks.

MeFi post: Watch the guy with the beard
Hey everyone. I created this piece, so I'd like to point out that this is a comedy sketch -- nothing more, nothing less. This was not an attempt to rip off kung fu movies and the Matrix, but rather to reference them. Likewise, this isn't intended to be a film masterwork -- we just hoped it would be funny. Thanks to those who liked it -- I'm flattered.

(To preempt any suspicions -- I had nothing to do with the posting of this link. I've learned my lesson well.)... [more]

Thanks, bluedaniel, I really appreciate the compliment. And thanks, ciderwoman, no offense taken -- though I do suggest you might enjoy more of what you find on the net if you lower your standards a bit, and look to be entertained rather than awed. ;)

MeFi post: In Which the President Orders a Reporter to Buy Some Ribs
I just don't particularly understand why they issued it as a press release, considering that not much is said except for "Stop asking me questions -- I'm trying to order ribs."

Moonbiter -- That's my question exactly. I didn't link to this because it says anything about Bush in particular, but because the fact that this was recorded as a press conference is uniquely bizarre.

Man, I feel like a boob.

Still, if I had any part in getting the hoax into mainstream news sources, I'm happy.

MeFi post: Best damn news I've heard all day
Three comments:

1) I'm all for the promotion of masturbating, but I do wish they hadn't used the term "self-pleasuring".

2) This article, like most health reports, has some serious correlation/causation issues to work out. (I bet men who ejaculate more buy a lot more Kleenex, but that doesn't mean that Kleenex prevents prostate cancer.)

3) Well, guess all that masturbating will make up for the smokin'!

MeFi post: Bulwer-Lytton contest results
Personally, I'm a fan of Adam Cadre's Lyttle Lytton, which recognizes that brevity is the soul of wit. One of my favorites:

"Jennifer stood there, quietly ovulating."

And personally, I found the runner-up far funnier than the winner, which is just a lame joke.

MeFi post: Breaking up is hard to do.
... and it sounds like the intern was pretty young, so there are some excuses for the letter's folly ...

I'm twenty myself, and I wouldn't grant him any excuses. By the standards of my sub-generation, at least, Kelly Tripplehorn is an abusive, manipulative maniac who should never be let near a woman again.

What a coincidence, dhoyt -- I just got back!

I would address this in the MetaTalk thread, since that really is the place to do it, but since there's so much discussion here already, I'll just do it here.

First of all, the background: Yes, I'm in the comedy troupe that filmed this piece. However, in line with the strict wording of the guidelines, I neither created it nor was involved in its creation. I didn't write it, I didn't film it, I didn't... [more]

Wulfgar -- I don't know why you're so dead-set on making me look the fool about this. I would continue to defend myself, but after explaining and apologizing for myself, I'd rather not respond to what I see as trolling. People like you, who don't seem to want to let honest mistakes lie, are what makes Metafilter a much more hostile environment than it should be. We're all friends here.

SpaceCoyote -- thanks!

Wulfgar, I made a judgement call, I made the wrong one, I apologized. You seem to want more than that, but you haven't yet said what that is. That's all I was getting at.

(And I know what trolling means, and I meant it.)

MeFi post: Country Joe's Rag
I saw Country Joe at Clearwater Folk Festival a couple of years -- at that time, he was singing,

"Well it's 1, 2, 3, what're we dying for?
Don't ask me cause I don't know
Next stop is Kosovo."

The rest of his songs were about how great nurses were, if I remember correctly. The man is a hack, unfortunately.

MeFi post: The Blind Watchmaker ain't so blind after all.
Uh. From what I can see, Williams and daSilva haven't said anything on intelligent design. I think all of us agree that intelligent design is pretty fallacious -- could we therefore avoid preaching to the choir and have a more interesting discussion? (Not trying to moderate, here -- just a suggestion.)

I'm lucky enough to be on a university computer at the moment, so I snagged a copy of the article, and am currently printing it. If anyone wants the PDF, feel free to... [more]

MeFi post: Jack Chick weighs in on September 11th.
In response to the question of why I linked to this: first of all, everyone loves Jack Chick. Everyone. I've always gotten a kick out of him, frankly. But when I read the new tract, it felt a little strange -- because this time it was topical. When chick has a punk rock kid say, "Wow, this music is totally awesome! It makes me want to committ suicide!" and then kill himself, it's humorously ridiculous. When he uses the same sort of exaggeration in... [more]

MeFi post: corporations as persons
It's an interesting argument, but without more knowledge of law than I have, it reminds me of the old "The United States declared itself bankrupt and therefore doesn't exist" wacko argument. (I'm sure there was a previous thread about this, but I have no idea where.)

MeFi post: File a claim if you bought a CD!
Unfortunately, class-action settlements like this often end up with the defendent receiving a profit anyway. When Blockbuster was charged with overcharging all their customers for late fees (a huge income stream for them), they made up for it by printing a free rental coupon on every receipt. And sure, it's great to get a free rental, but that hardly set them back as much as they profited. (And, as far as I know, they haven't changed their late fees as a result.)

MeFi post: CDNow cedes operations to Amazon.com
God knows how they do it, but Amazon just seems to know how to take a good idea and make it better. I used to prefer CDNow to Amazon before I switched to Half.com (honestly, who the fuck is going to pay $18.00 for a 1995 Magnetic Fields CD when you can find it new on Half.com for ten?), before Amazon's "Used & New" became much, much better than Half.com could ever be. (For instance, on Amazon you can -- gasp! -- e-mail the person who buys a CD from you! Think of the possibilities!)

MeFi post: Sierra Adventure Games live on!
Honestly, I was always less of a fan of the Sierra adventure games than of LucasArts. And what's more, they're actually supporting the Monkey Island franchise!

A few links: Though I haven't really checked it out, there appears to be an open-source version of LucasArts' legendary SCUMM system (the one used for the earlier, 2D games like Maniac Mansion, Monkey Island 1 & 2, etc.) in the works.

Plus, if you liked Infocom games... [more]

MeFi post: The Ossian Hoax
Yeah, seriously, this was a great post. I first heard of Ossian when read The Sorrows of Young Wether. What's interesting about it is that Goethe uses Ossian as a fairly central feature of the book, much as he might have referenced Homer, for instance. The question of what sort of "truth" this gives to the work is really interesting.

I mostly bring up Ossian now as an example of what I feel Tolkien was originally doing (and what must have... [more]
