Remarks by the President to a Press Pool.
THE PRESIDENT: I'm ordering ribs. David, do you need a rib?
Q: But Mr. President --
THE PRESIDENT: Stretch, thank you, this is not a press conference. So instead of asking questions, answer mine: Are you going to buy some food?

Metallica sues over use of E, F chords.
No, it's not an Onion article. Really. They're completely serious. No exaggerating is taking place here. Honestly, they really are suing another band for using the E and F chords. It's on their
website, for god's sake. All I know is, I'm getting drunk tonight.

If you're already familiar with the work of
Jack Chick, the creator of those amusingly offensive evangelist comic books, you probably know not to take him too seriously -- after all, the threat of being thrown into a giant lake of fire by an angel isn't particularly frightening. Still, when
his new tract starts with an image of the smoldering twin towers, and ends with the words,
"Bob, now I know that Allah doesn't really love me or even care about any Muslim. But Jesus, the Son of God, does," it's difficult not to worry that this time he's bitten off more than he can chew.

Black Holes Merge. Massive layoffs expected throughout galaxy.
Analysts predict big payoffs for the economy, however. "A burst of gravitational waves that could warp the very fabric of space will go a long way towards increasing shareholding value," said one economist. Both black holes had recently suffered a dramatic drop in stock price, and were under the threat of hostile takeover from industry leader Black Hole 86184-B before the merger was announced, which took Wall Street pundits off guard. "Much to our surprise, we found that both were active black holes," Stefanie Komossa of the Max Planck Astro-Economics Institute in Germany, said in a statement. Proponents of big business greeted the announcement with pleasure: "This supports the idea that black holes can grow to enormous masses in the centres of galaxies by merging with other black holes."

In a word, Google's goal is to do important stuff that matters to a lot of people. In pursuit of that goal, we've developed a set of values that drive our work, including one of our most cherished core values: "Don't be evil." We already know that Google can deliver the goods when it comes to services -- so what do you guys think? Is it possible that a company could actually be worthy of our trust?

The Mailbox Bomber's band sucks
, according to
Pitchfork Media, one of the most intellectual and pretentious music review sites on the web.
"Can you feel the pain?" Helder implores on "Back and Black," a passable stab at Incesticide-era Nirvana, albeit with horrendous lyrics and a gratuitous punk-rock stomp at the coda. "Stop the game!" Helder winces, as though squeezing out a fat one, and we really can feel the pain.
Related issue: the
band's webpage (also discussed
here) has been taken by Angelfire down for "violation of terms of service." Still,
Google's cache of the page reveals nothing objectionable. Is Angelfire right to take down the webpage of a nationally known criminal (the first time I can think of that the issue has arisen)? Or do their Terms of Service really have a "no domestic terrorism" clause?

Eight peace activists were shot and wounded by Israeli soldiers. The soldiers apparently (and I could be wrong) fired without provocation -- the activists were unarmed, and were marching peacefully. Israel's Justice Minister was quoted in the Miami Herald today (no web link available, sorry) as saying,
"A person playing with fire should not yell when he gets burned." Essentially, what is being said here is that being a protestor is sufficient reason to be shot. The Israeli army claims to be hunting down "terrorists", but if this is how they define the word I don't feel too inclined to trust them.

"The fraud, the huckster, the salesman are not new phenomena in America; what is new is that they now so strongly control every estate of our society."
For the last few days, I've been reading the
Progressive Review's
Undernews, a sort of progressive news blog-by-e-mail -- and frankly, it's amazing.
One of today's articles blew my mind: it's a spot-on encapsulation of What's Wrong with America Today. (Scroll down to "Derivative America and the Enron Generation." This link is to the "Latest Issue" page. Tomorrow I think it will be archived
here.) Seriously, read it now. It's worth it.

BlogBack
RIP, November 16th.
SnorComments: RIP, about a week later, due to a massive migration of BlogBack's deserting rats. With the blogging community reaching critical mass, is it possible for a remotely-hosted comments service to survive the bandwidth bludgeoning?

The new face of Forum 3000:

On September 30th, there was a peace protest in Washington D.C.
I'm surprised no one else linked to this -- about 50 students from
my college attended and joined the crowd of a few thousand. I would have gone, but I'm dubious about the efficacy of public protest despite the fact that I'm an affirmed pacifist. What do you folks think? Will a totally non-military action be an appropriate response? (And is there any possiblity of the US acting in such a way?) Is the loss of a single additional human life in this new war justifiable?

Remember Zork, Planetfall, and the other creations of late game company Infocom? Well, "interactive fiction," as the format is called, is still alive and well. Every year the IF community -- which is known for releasing work of quality far surpassing even Infocom's masterpieces -- holds a competition for short works, and
this year's contestants have been released! Read this post's comments for more info...

What on earth does this company do?
I've been staring at this sentence for hours and still can't figure it out. "Descartes powers the next generation of collaborative logistics management on a global scale, providing customers with Internet-based capabilities to optimally manage nChain processes." More business babble inside!

Hot damn, look at all the cool blogging tools that have come out of
Blogger API. In the last few days industrious developers have come out with
wapblogger,
jabber-blog-it,
BlogBuddy, and my personal choice for coolest thing ever:
( blogdex ), which daily indexes the most-linked-to sites in the blogging community. (And yes, it really works!) How are you putting these tools to use on your own site?

If you're a fan of Interactive Fiction then you'll certainly be familiar with
Andrew Plotkin the author of some of the best works in the genre, including
Spider in Web and
So Far. Only Macintosh users, however, will remember his phenomenol early-90s puzzle game,
System's Twilight, "An Abstract Fairytale." I recently played it again, and am astounded that such an early piece of work contains such a fully realized fantasy world (literally, it's abstract) and such
goddamn hard puzzles. Download it and experience some gaming history, and a damn good time.

Radiohead to appear on South Park!
Insert unfunny South Park quote here. Suggestions: "Looks like Thom Yorke got sand in his vagina." "Why hello, children. Allow me to sing you a chilling apolcalyptic ballad about the future when we'll all be robots." However, anyone who mentions "Oh my god, they killed Thom Yorke!" will be kicked in the balls. I'm serious. None of that.

Bush to meet with Dalai Lama!
This is a big deal to us Buddhists, as well as Tibetan freedom supporters. Wonder what His Holiness will have to say about the death penalty...

Steve Jackson Games
, the makers of such fine pen-and-paper RPGs as
Gurps, has been running
a blog since 1994. I've been reading it since 1996, and I just now realized: it was the first blog I've ever read. In addition to release information, they also post game industry news, personal stories, and even
the Illuminated Site of the Week, all with intimacy and personality we've come to expect from blogs.

Reasons
not to buy a
Vagina Washing Rod:
1. Badly translated Korean catalogue entry. ("Purity, an essential device for cleanliness of women daily!")
2. "No, Mom! It's for hygeine! Really!"
3. Look, just take a second, and think about
what it does. Now think about
where it goes. Still interested?
