MeFi post: Begging The Question
I find it kinda ironic when people say that the original meaning of a word is dead, and it now means something else, so get over it. The meaning of the word will change again anyway, maybe back into its original form, and maybe because people made a stink about it. This is part of the normal course of events.

Do you have any examples of this, or are you just talking out of your ass? Because I've studied a lot of etymology, and I don't know any examples of a word that changed "back into its original form... because people made a stink about it." And what's "ironic" about stating facts?

The ironic part is that the "usage changes" axiom is being used to browbeat people who are actually the ones who are trying to change the... [more]

Any time something happens in the desert and there's no obvious explanation, assume the answer is ice. Someone stabbed, but no murder weapon? Ice dagger. Someone shot, but no bullets? Ice bullets.

I don't think I've ever been in a library that would kick you out for doing anything short of being an utter jackass, being warned, and then being an utter jackass again. Especially now that libraries are accepting a change in atmosphere, assuming less the role of quiet temple of research and more of community meeting place / free wifi hotspot / flop house.

Perhaps there are draconian libraries out there that I don't know about. I highly doubt that, though, since I... [more]

Uhh, then I guess it's just me, Joey, and weretable that think this is a pretty awesome bit of work on the guy's part.

I imagine my own attempt to make a Doom III inspired case would probably just involve taping some screen shots printed on A4 paper to the side, maybe drawing a pentagram with red Sharpie.

MeFi post: Financial sensibility... in America? Wow!
The people who are proud of not owning a credit card will find it much more difficult to buy a house or a car, unless they can pay cash on the barrel head. Like it or not, a credit card is almost a requirement today, so if you don't own one, you should probably get one, and then use it responsibly in order to have an easier time of it later.

What's so different about reading the uninformed opinions of a group of rich and famous celebrities, and reading the uninformed opinions of a self-appointed hipster brain trust of yuppie tech people? The hipsters have better links about Ruby on Rails, and the celebrities have better stories about shooting heroin through a porcupine quill with the cast of Cannonball Run. Both can get old real fuckin quick.

I'll agree that TV has gotten more complex. I'm not sure how that makes you smarter, though.

My thoughts exactly. Especially considering that now, a lot of people watch television instead of reading books, it's possible that television just got more complicated because it has to fill a much larger role in our lives. I'm not saying that this is true, but it's certainly possible, and the article says nothing that convinces me otherwise.

MeFi post: "Independent" Film. What is it?
For a while I went to all the art house theaters here in Seattle, trying to get my share of independent films because I wanted to see a non-hollywood perspective on cinema, and because I wanted to support brave film-making. After not too long I realized that Sturgeon's Law applies just as well to artsy independent films as it does to big-budget blockbusters -- most indy movies are utter crap, just like most big studio movies are utter crap. It doesn't matter who financed it. Not to me, as a... [more]

Tim Wakefield isn't nearly leathery enough to be the guy in that second set of photos. It's weird that someone who spends all day out in the sun throwing a baseball would look more like a saddlebag than someone whose job presumably calls for spending a lot of time indoors.

I think the system is corrupt, and that the police are tools, and that the corporations are a self-perpetuating aristocracy, with all the powers and freedom from consequences that phrase implies. The day there actually is a revolt against the ruling class, I hope I'm right there when they storm the Bastille. On the other hand, Andy Mickel shot an innocent man with a kid at home, so he's my enemy as much as anybody else is, and fuck him. This has absolutely nothing to do with ideology, and... [more]

As though the period meant anything, or required any sort of effort on your part. It's a punctuation mark, not a freaking statue. Discussing the issue is much more meaningful, and requires much more thought and effort. Continue the food fight.

"Concede the point" isn't the right way to phrase the original meaning. In fact, it's almost opposite. The original meaning of "begs the question" is something like "assumes without proof the matter in question." It's just another way to say "you've used circular logic."

If I say "Bush is a retard, as proven by his retardedness" I have begged the question.

But I agree that the modern... [more]
