You wouldn't want to ruin all the fun, would you?

One day, I hope to be the number one "enemy of fun".

In all seriousness, if a post is going to be deleted as a double post, I don't see the harm in letting the author delete it. Perhaps if the author and "x" number of non authors flag it as a double post, then it could be deleted automatically.

In the end, the post will be deleted.... [more]

casu marzu - The previous post you linked about users deleting their own posts was before the flagging function. My thought is to relieve some of the work needed to review and delete posts, that's why I think that if a post is flagged by both the author and some threshold of readers, it should just be deleted.

Double posts are automatic deletions, there really isn't judgement involved, even if there is good discussion in the second post. I wouldn't... [more]

Someone can flag their own post as a double, even if it's not.

But if it was required that both the author and a minimum number of non-authors flagged it as a double post, it would be a fairly good indicator.

Well, to sum up this discussion:

- Most people agree that a poster should not be able to delete their own double post by themselves

- Some people agree that a group of MeFi members, including the double post author should be able to delete a double post.

- Some people agree that users should not be able to delete a double post because there is a tradition of having fun in the comments of the double post.... [more]

I like WestCoaster's idea, I'm not sure if it could bring in enough to actually make a living off of.

I think that askMeFi is a potential money maker, I'll do some brainstorming on it. Everyone I point there gets hooked quick and I think that both questioners and answerers get a lot out of it.

I (can't beleive I) read this whole thread and so I'll throw in my two cents. I always really liked metafilter because it had a pretty anti-advertisement stance. I don't fault matt at all for wanting to make money (as in income, not covering costs) off the site now, but that clearly changes what metafilter is to me.

The users of the site owe a ton to Matt. Matt also would not have this site if it wasn't for the members creating the content. I have made a conscious... [more]

That whole ask mefi thread is a rehash of a Howard Stern conversation earlier this week when they were having Joe Perry on. I can't remember what day it was, maybe Tuesday of Wednesday. Maybe he got the idea from there.

Is MeFi going to join the tag bandwagon? Something like "see posts you tagged with 'xxxx'" or "see all posts you with 'xxxx'". Tagging could cause more people to post non-news related stuff since those links tend to be timeless compared with the daily CNN front page.

Hapy Birthday Matt. Birthdays are always a good time to take stock in your life and see what you have accomplished and where you want to go next. More to the point, the prevalent "it vibrates" comments are just one of those pet peeves of mine, they never add anything to the discussion and just harken back to a not-so-amusing inside joke.

When I read Matt's original query, I thought "keep it up for sure". When I read the emails he got, I changed my mind. The emails seemed very rational in that they didn't want this to become some internet meme (wether they know what a meme is or not) and would appreciate it if Metafilter would do its part in not hyping the death.

It's too late now, I assume that this story will spring up elsewhere. It seems reasonable though, that if someone asked nicely not... [more]

My two cents; if you do sell it, it seems weird to sell the past content. If someone buys it, the slate should be wiped clean. Alot of people participated in Metafilter under the mathowie regime and may not want to be associated with a new owner.

I think too many members judge a post based on the amount of comments and discussion it creates. I still think a week of comment free metafilter might help people reevaluate what makes a good post.

What about adding a "this link has been clicked 6 times" stat under the post. I realize that it would probably only capture the first, main link. This might feed people's need for validation.

As one of the whiners in one of the posts, I agree that I added nothing to the comments, or to this site for that matter. I don't know why I feel compelled to make comments about weak posts, it's not like I'm an uberposter myself. For some reason it really grates on me when I perceive that posters are making posts just for the sake of making a post and not really trying to share anything new with the community here. Again, my opinion and my reaction. The same argument could be made that I... [more]

My post should not be taken as an attack on the quality of new user posts. It's not like I'm some super poster who has the right to criticize others. More of an observation than anything.

Yesterday 11 out 32 posts were made by users with ids 14k+ and a couple by 13k ids. It would be an interesting study of community dynamics to chart how active new members are and how much their participation drops off after intervals of time.
posted to MetaTalk by jonah at 8:17 AM on August 22, 2002
I think that giving posters access more often based on more positive votes would most likely have the effect of increasing the quantity of posts. People would be inclined to throw posts out there as often as they were allowed with the hopes of becoming the Golden Poster who is allowed to post once per minute. Of course, many would flame out and get to make a one sentance post every year, but with 15k+ users to participate, this battle royale could go on for a while.... [more]

I don't think that making people wait an extra month after they have joined before they could post would do anything. I assume that most, if not all of the new members were lurking before new sign ups were allowed anyway. It's not as if they had to be logged in just to see the site and read the comments.

I'd be interested in the statistics of number posts by 14k+ members to all other members. Alot of days it seems like newer members make an equal number of posts compared to all other users combined.

It does make sense that new members would post more since many older members may have stopped coming to and posting to metafilter. I just thought it would be an interesting stat if anyone wants to script it.

There's a feature in pMachine that lets you toggle a check box to determine wether or not you receive an email when there are new comments on a thread you commented on. It's pretty handy if you want to stay involved in a thread without constantly going back to the site. I use it at LABlogs.com but the comment frequency is much much lower compared to MeFi.

I don't find it too odd coming from Harpers. To me, alot of their content, particularly the editorial content, comes across very 'holier than thou'. That being said, I do like the feature articles, I was reading the Aral Sea article today at lunch and thoroughly enjoyed it.

That's not a complete quote if you're trying to prove Matt wrong on the Simpsons reference, the next line is 'Cypruss Hill, I'm looking in your direction'. Also, I doubt that the term "I'm looking in your direction, xxxx" term originated with the Simpsons.

I think a weekly newsletter might be cool, with sites selected by a different member every week. Sort of like Heather is doing with her guest curator at Mirror Project. I could see a sign up list of willing 'curators' which would be compiled, then members from that list would be randomly selected to collect a list of interesting links posted during a seven day period. Then the list could either be emailed or exist as its own page.

Interesting point Matt on the product placement, but would this really be wrong? If a weblogger has a loyal (I hate using that word) readership and the people who read the site are interested in the weblogger's opinions and insights, I think that they would expect an honest review of a product.
