So easy it's impossible to use.

Should be simple to insert a "text field" in a form template in Word 2007. Why isn't it?

A TAXing Question

H&R Block sells kinda pricey tax preparation software and for an extra $15 bucks, or so, you can file online using that software. Or, you can go to the IRS website and grab a link that allows you to prepare AND FILE your taxes for FREE -- using H&R Block's website. This makes no sense to me. Why on earth would they do that???

While we're on the subject of M$ quirks ... why can I type "em-dashes" using ALT+0151 in the copy of Wurd I use at work -- but I cannot do this on my personal copy at home? Which program setting and/or Windows configuration governs this? (Both using XP and Word2000).

Are any flavors of Linux currently more adept at exploiting the AMD64 chip than others? I know that Gentoo has a robust package available. Last I check with Debian, they had one version better suited for the Intel, but were working on AMD-specific one. To compound my problem, I hope to add VMWare once it's up and running (to run WindowsXP as a virtual 32-bit OS).

Bike Rack Etiquette. Can anyone explain why certain asshats insist on parking their bikes horizontally against the front of bike racks, thereby taking up a dozen+ spaces? Am I missing something? Is there some reason beyond the obvious selfishness? Are they oblivious to the fact that pissed off people (like me) will gleefully let the air out of their tires ... or worse?

HistoryFilter: Odd reference to McCarthy in Kerry's 1971 Senate Testimony. He said: "I realize that we cannot negotiate treaties and I realize that even my visits in Paris, precedents had been set by Senator McCarthy and others, in a sense are on the borderline of private individuals negotiating, et cetera. What was the incident involving McCarthy that set a precedent?

Looking for a small appliance they used to sell on TV to make hamburger patties. It was simply a clear plastic tube with circular dividers. Drop in meat, divider, meat, divider, meat, diver, meat, etc. -- then smush it into even patties. Can't Google, cuz I don't know what the hell it was called.

WhatAmIMissingFilter: I've been waiting for an optimum time to ask this on the main page in an appropriate thread, but the opportunity hasn't arisen. Thus: Exactly HOW is the government getting away with enforcing these so-called "free speech" zones? Allowing for reasonable public safety measures, it's still clearly at odds with the constitution. (I'm sure places like Planned Parenthood would dearly "love" to relocate protesters to a deserted roped-off area 6 blocks away.) Is it just that no one has called them on it yet?

Anyone ever hear of < ctacb>> Magazine? This was publisher Stas Namin's eponymous magazine on Russian life and culture; a gorgeous monthly (printed in Russian) that I used to get through the local Barnes & Noble. They suddenly dropped it with no explanation. I'm curious: did it go out of business? Is there any other US outlets? I'd love to subscribe.

Speaking of NAV ... I just bought the Norton Security Suite and am about to install it. I lack a cruft cleaner (Norton's CleanSweep seems to be only available in a bundle I don't want). Thus: I'm looking at MacAfee's "QuickClean". I'm worried that it will trip over Norton's stuff since it appears they both monitor a few of the same things.

Any good "distributed computing"...

Any good "distributed computing" projects out there?

SETI is boring. As I recall, it only intersects with likely regions twice, due to the placement of the telescope. They just rehash the same data anyway. Moreover, they really don't have any lack of volunteers. I did DISTRIBUTED NET for a long time. Slim pickin's there; they only have two projects at present. Kinda wanna support another project for awhile. The MERSENNE PRIME group had a resounding success last year and Iguess they are on to the next one. Maybe the FOLDING PROTEIN gang? I dunno ...
