Ask post: I walk on the edges of my feet - to dire results!
I do the same thing. If there is a Walking Company near you, you can have your feet pressure mapped for free, and then test a recommended footbed insert. For $60 or so for the insert, the results are pretty remarkable. However, this is probably best looked after by a podiatrist (which I haven't done either, by the way).

Ask post: I need to clean my couch
You can always call a professional cleaner (i.e. Chem-dry or Stanley Steemer or the like). For a typical stain they charge about $50. For yours, I am guessing it will be more, and, depending on how thorough you were, it might be cheaper to get a new couch. If you decide to use a professional cleaner or resotration service, their chances of successfully removing the stain are better if you have not attempted to treat the stain yourself. Also, the sooner you call, the better.

Ask post: Group names based on one person
If the proper name ends with an r you can always use the suffix ati. For example, The Metafilterati.

Ask post: Take thy beak from out my cover, and take thy form from off my pool
I second the plastic owl. I have seen them used successfully to deter birds in two circumstances. And when I say success, I mean they were 100% successful, as birds wanted nothing to do with the awnings the plastic owls perched on.

Ask post: Sudden personality change in a 54 year-old man
Other than nicotine, the occasional scotch, and high blood pressure medication, he's not on any drugs.

Almost exactly a year ago, I was diagnosed with high blood pressure. I was at the doctor for an unrelated medical event when the diagnosis was made. For the past year, I have been on numerous medications for the treatment of this disease as success with these drugs seems hit or miss. Some of the medicines did a fantastic job of lowering my blood... [more]

Grod, interestingly enough I had the exact same issue on my old PII-300 laptop running WinME. I do not remember when it started, but I did use j2 (which is part of efax and uses the efax viewer). My guess is that the viewer is the culprit. Unfortunately, I never was diligent enough to resolve the file type association issue, but it certainly sounds like live frogs is on the right track. My solution was Right Click>Open with...

Night of the Comet is not exactly remarkable, except for the fact that it was the movie I saw the first time I took a girl to the movies. If I recall, she wasn't in to zombies.

I cross a toll bridge almost daily, and the folks that work the toll booths there have the strips on hand. I had a placement issue with tolltag in my car due to an in-the-windshield antenna, and went through about six strips before it worked properly.

Legal Loan Sharking or Essential Service? Reason takes the contrarian view. Of course, one could also have an article about crack dealers entitled "Drug Peddling or Essential Service?"

For companies that are not self-insured (which I am guessing is most companies), I believe health insurance rates are calculated based on an "experience rating" of previous years' total medical expenses of the group and then a flat fee is charged per employee in the plan. This is the same way worker's compensation insurance rates are calculated.

Obviously, in a small group, one incidence of cancer or heart surgery can significantly influence the premiums. In... [more]

I lived in a downtown apartment with controlled access, and the newspaper delivery person did not have access to the residential area. Therefore, all newspapers were left on a bench in the lobby, and the apartment numbers were written on the corner of the paper. From time to time, my paper would turn up missing, as would others'. After several discussions, the enterprising deliverer began to leave an extra paper. Instead of an apartment number scrawled in the whitespace, the extra paper... [more]

Actually, if you are sure that the last 3,300 consecutive comments are spam, MT Blacklist 1.6.4 will let you select all of those comments and delete them at once, not just in batches of 25. Click on De-spam, enter 3,300 in the "Search last _____entries" box, and then click the "All (i.e. no filter)" button. Hit the "Search" button and the last 3,300 comments will pop up ready to be deleted. Click "Delete" and they are gone forever. This will work... [more]

I gotta say that Flight of the Lost Balloon really seems like a match, albeit in color, given your description. The TV guide piece even references Indiana Jones. By chance did you see it on a B&W television? Perhaps these posters will help jog your memory.

I cannot vouch for the safety of the following technique (although it never caused me any problems), but I am sure of its efficacy. Pour a cup of Pine-Sol in your bathwater and soak for a few minutes. As I recall from my youth, this method works very quickly. Also as I recall, this remedy was given to my mother by a nurse. Growing up in Louisiana and spending a good deal of time romping through the woods, I would estimate that I used this solution 50 times or more. Good luck.... [more]

Amazing! This is the one AskMe question I wanted to know, but haven't got around to asking. If I recall correctly, this film played as an "HBO Short Cut" between feature films on the network in about 1983 or so.

Let me second konolia's gall bladder guess. I am not a doctor, but I had a bum gall bladder and the first symptom was feeling as if I needed to belch but being unable to do so. Typically with gall bladder problems, though, the pain is so intense you seek an immediate remedy. However, as I understand it, a sphincter muscle on one's gall bladder can "fail mildly," releasing bile into the diaphragm and causing a varying amount of what feels like gastrointestinal pain depending upon... JConnect Free is a service (owned by the same company that owns eFax) that appears to do what you want for a trial period, although the details are a bit sketchy on the site. I have used the JConnect Premier service for several years and have found it to be very reliable.
