My first CD was ac/dc's back in black, which I bought in 1990. It disappointed me by sounding plodding and weak. About a year ago I ran into some software to re-record it as 2% faster without changing the pitch, and with more bass. They must have played it faster on the radio to make room for ads. 17 years later, I finally got my ya-yas.

Broadcasters, netcasters: call their bluff -- they want too much? Give them nothing. Switch to independent label artists who crave rather than abuse your attention.

patricio: Decemberists are on Capitol, Shins on Sub pop. Warner Music Group owns 49% of Sub Pop. Those are majors. when I say "indie", I speak not of a style of music, but of representation.

Bowie's Outside is a great album because even if you're not up for the story or the concept of the concept album, the songs present relatable and adult emotional themes that you can dig on without following the murky story. It's a genuinely clever record, not an artist leaning on a gimmick because he's got nothing to say.

I like nine inch nails and this looks like utter wank on par with Styx's Mr. Roboto.

Billy-- Gawker has had many public server issues, so I'm not spilling too many beans by pointing that out. It's also in the process of migrating, so all will soon be well. The pains of growth.
