Characters as crafty as Veronica Mars?
Check out the movie Brick. Like Veronica Mars, it's hard boiled High School but taken to the extreme.
And I'd like to give a hearty 3rding to Burn Notice, one of the coolest unwatched shows on television right now.

Where do you buy your video games - and why?
Target, Best Buy or Fry's when it's a day one buy. More often Best Buy because of the inventory tracker on their site. (I work for a video game developer so game releases are usually the news of the day. Refreshing the Best Buy inventory page and waiting for the grey "Unavailable" to switch to a shiny "Add to Cart" button is the norm on Tuesdays.)
I'm in the San Fernando Valley, so when I'm looking for something older or rarer, I head over to Game... [more]

Do the cops kill on The Wire
I don't have an answer to the question, but I have a feeling, besides the two Prez incidents, that it's very close to zero.
If memory serves me correctly, Dan Simon's book Homicide: A Year on the Killing Streets has a bit about Baltimore homicide police commonly forgetting to take their guns out of their desk drawers before answering a call.

iTunes 4.8 visualizer
If the iTunes visualizer is anything like Milkdrop or any of the Geiss visualizers for Winamp (which it seems to be trying to mimic), then it's a combination of a bunch of different wave styles, effect filters and color palettes. All of them play over one another randomly, in iTunes case. As you say, certain aspects repeat, but the number of different variables make for a few hundred (thousand?) combinations. If you want to see it in action, and you have a Windows machine handy, download Winamp... [more]

Actually, eyeballkid, I do believe you have your chronology reversed. Geiss didn't start working on visualizers at Nullsoft until 2001.
" The latest version of Geiss is 4.24, released January 4, 2000."
Which, if my math is correct, is before 2001. I recall the Geiss visualizers being around a while before that, 1998 maybe? I don't know when he started working for Nullsoft. I didn't even know he worked for them, I... [more]

I'd take Ennis' run on Hellblazer, which comes roaring out of the gate with the excellent "Dangerous Habits" story arc, over any of his Preacher storylines. (John Constantine, coincidentally, also a Moore character from Swamp Thing).
Any of Gaiman's Sandman, the "Season of Mists" arc in particular, is as good as Watchmen.
If you're looking for stories like Watchmen, you're probably not going to find many. Watchmen was one of... [more]

"No one makes me look bad and gets away with it. You understand that I can make your uppity ass disappear with a single phone call, right?"
"Don't worry I'm going to throw it in Ohio. I'll tell 'em I'm gay or something. It'll be all over the internet by morning."
"That's 'internets.'"

How about in Final Fantasty 7, at the end of the final movie, when you see Aeris looking down on all on the rest of the characters?
I've never felt closer to iconomy than this moment.
I also felt an emotional attachment to the characters in Skies of Arcadia (dreamcast, gamecube) but I couldn't tell you why.

I watched about 20 minutes and got bored.
I really though there was something wrong with me. I'm glad I'm not alone.
The beginning of MA was interesting, the idea of taking the interviewer and assistant and having them chase her around her memories was cool at first, but it just got dull.
OT some more, if anyone watched Madonna's concert on HBO within the last two years, you may have noticed the rape... [more]

Also, if you can't decide, just fell good with the fact that this was the best year EVER for the Raiders and hope that Oakland repeats this trend for the next decade.

I tried OmniRemote with a Handspring Visor. I didn't have a problem with the IR range (occasionally I had to lean forward a little) as much as how small the buttons on the screen had to be. Once I added 10 digits for channels, a button for power, two for volume and and up/down for channels, I found that I was having to use the stylus quite a bit just to hit the right buttons (and my fingers aren't all that big).
I've since moved up from a Visor to a Sony Clie and the... [more]
