Final preparations for a first half-marathon

Final half-marathon preparations: I'm signed up for the Sydney Half-Marathon (my first ever!) on May 18th, and I've just got a couple questions as I enter these last few weeks of preparations. Do I need to start investigating energy gels or GUs or something? And is this a *really* bad time to get new shoes? I'm getting a bit jittery so I'd be grateful for any wisdom and advice from the MeFi running contingent...

Metafilter Runs - Challenge

It's been a while since our last post, so I thought I'd remind folks about the Metafilter RUNNER+ group. Everybody's welcome to join in the challenges, and you don't have to have the Nike+iPod kit anymore. The February Challenge was won by Slarty Bartfast, who racked up more than 150km! I've just launched a new challenge for March/April. Get running!

For the sixth year running, I'm hosting an Oscar...

Oscar Contest 2008 For the sixth year running, I'm hosting an Oscar "Pick 'Em" contest over at my website. As in years past (2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007), the winner will receive a custom, one-of-a-kind sock monkey creation. This year it's - what else? - a Striking Writer Monkey. He's also kind of a hipster. Everybody's welcome to enter.

Should I sell my website? What is it worth?

Someone e-mailed and wants to buy one of my websites. Should I do it? How much should I ask for? Should I feel like a sell-out? There are complicating factors.

What colour is octarine?

Pratchett fans: I need to knit something for a Discworld fan. I thought it might be fun to do an octagonal washcloth out of octarine cotton. The only problem, as I understand it, is that octarine is only visible to wizards and cats. So how would I, a mere human mortal, best approximate this colour? OR - can you think of anything else suitably Discworld-ish?

How big is a 4-cup coffee press?

How big (in actual dimensions) is a four-cup coffee press? Something similar to this one. I need to knit a cozy for one and I can't find a clear description of the dimensions anywhere.

Where to find a poster of Cossington Smith's "Sock Knitter"?

Help me decorate my new house with Australian Art! I would like to buy a print or poster version of Grace Cossington Smith's painting The Sock Knitter. Can you help me find one?

Which is a better stove: gas or induction?

My husband and I cook a lot. We're moving from an apartment with a decent gas stove/oven to one with a crappy electric stove/oven. Obviously, Something Must Be Done. Should we go for gas or induction?

Looking for GAP "Favorite Chinos"

I bought two pairs of GAP "Favorite Chinos" on vacation in the US a few months ago, and I've come to realize that they really are my favorite chinos. I need more. Unfortunately I'm in Australia so I can't just pop 'round to a shop, and I can't seem to find them anywhere online. Can anyone verify that they're discontinued, or advise on where I can order some?

Cat vs. Landlord

Can our Sydney landlord really demand that we get rid of our cat?

Strap on your running shoes!

MetaFilter Runs v.3.1 is nearly finished, and it looks like ajr is going to take out the speed title. Congratulations, ajr! There seems to be a consensus that the distance challenges are more motivating though (especially for those of us who are decidedly more tortoise than hare), so pj_rivera has proposed an ongoing series of monthly distance contests. The June one is just starting, so please list your Nike+ username if you haven't been issued an invitation yet.

This is my fifth year running an Oscar pick 'em...

Oscar Contest 2007 This is my fifth year running an Oscar pick 'em contest, and I always give away a custom sock monkey creation to the winner (2003, 2004, 2005, 2006). This year - in an attempt to top last year's gay sock monkey cowboys - the person who guesses best will receive a trio of Dream Monkeys.

Should we fly or drive from Indiana to Florida?

Overseas visitors planning to travel from Chicago to Orlando in the US. Which will be less hassle/expense, driving or flying? (Are one-way car rentals *really* that expensive?!)

How do I spot shoddy garments BEFORE I buy them?

Clothes Shopping Advice: I did it again. I bought what I thought was a quality knit top on sale and the damn thing is now "twisting" on me. Are there any tips or tricks to spotting whether a piece of clothing is well-made before you buy it?

How to identify a painting without a title?

Do you know of any database or website where I can try to identify a famous artwork based on its description? This is both general and specific; I have at this second a particular image I want to identify, and I also have a directory full of other unlabelled images that I will no doubt need to look up as well.

Will Diet Coke make me gain or lose weight in the short term?

Any jockeys or prizefighters in the house? I've read repeatedly that Diet Coke and other diet soft drinks have both sodium - which makes the body retain water - as well as caffeine - which acts as a mild diuretic. Which effect is greater? Will drinking a diet soda cause a net gain or loss in your weight a few hours later?

I just wanted to publicly thank FuzzyVerde, who actually delivered three tubs of ice cream to my pregnant sister today for her birthday (complete with festive cooler). The idea that a complete stranger halfway around the world would offer to help me out is just amazing. I love MeFites!

Is it possible to get a gallon or two of ice cream delivered on a specific day to an address in Los Angeles? Who should I contact?

Oscar Contest 2006 Yes, it's yet another Oscar Pick 'Em Contest. Mine's a little different though. For three years in a row now, I've given a custom sock monkey creation to the winner. (2003, 2004, 2005) This year I had a stroke of brilliance when designing the prize: The winner will receive a pair of gay sock monkey cowboys. Everybody's welcome to enter.

How can I clear my throat tickle?

I have a tickle at the back of my throat, way up high... just where it triggers my gag reflex. It's like I've half-swallowed a hair and it's been bothering me all day. I've tried the usual methods of getting rid of it - drinking lots of water, coughing and clearing my throat (i.e. trying to "hock" it up) and IT'S STILL THERE. Does anyone have any other home remedies for me to try before I give in to my urge to purge?

Do you know the secrets of turducken?

As an American living Down Under, I'm planning to introduce our Aussie friends to true American excess this Thanksgiving with a turducken. I've read a bunch of online recipes but I've never made one before, so I'm looking for tips and tricks from those who have. Do you know the secrets of turducken?

Advice for steeking?

I'm looking for advice on "steeking," which is the traditional technique of knitting a fairisle garment in the round and then cutting into it for armholes, neck, etc. Anyone know any good reference books (beyond out-of-print $150 Alice Starmore hardbacks) or have practical experience with this?

How to keep my husband from destroying socks?

My husband destroys socks. Every single pair he owns has holes in them, no matter how old they are. Darning is a neverending chore and buying new socks every week is expensive. Are there any socks that can stand up to him? Or are there any tricks to make his old socks hold together longer?

I'm a first time cat owner with a new 12-week-old kitten. I've read all the handbooks and official information I can get my hands on but I'm looking for practical advice from experienced "cat people" about feline psychology, training with positive reinforcement, and cat-proofing the house. How does this little crazy ball of fur become part of the family? (more inside)

I love the idea of the Big Things. It all started...

An Aussie defends Big Things. I love the idea of the Big Things. It all started in 1963 with an American immigrant so in love with his own banana plantation that he wanted everyone driving through to stop in and see it. So he built a gigantic banana. Soon there were lots of other imitators, like the Big Pineapple in Nambour, the Big Prawn at Ballina, and the Big Bull at Wauchope. (Bill Bryson writes in Down Under that the Big Bull has testicles that actually sway in the breeze.) There are now more than 80 Big Things dotted all over the country. Some people think they're tacky. Personally, I want to visit 'em all.

Three Dead From Southern Maryland Tornado. This is the kind of news story you skip because it doesn't happen in your state. It didn't even register to me until I realized that one of my daily reads - Moire - lives in La Plata. The twister went through her front yard. Her account of the storm and its aftermath is pretty powerful. Were any other bloggers involved? (It's my first post; be gentle.)
