MeTa post: We have some cool people at MeFi
I'm the knitting/yarn store employees, but really it's cheating. Thursday was my last day. I go back to being a software developer on Monday. That's a lot more boring (but sadly, pays a lot better).

My least-favorite portmanteau is "webisode." They had that one plastered on every bus station in Sydney last year, and it made my blood boil every time I saw it.

MeTa post: Sydney meet-up
I could do Sunday the 16th. (It's the day after my birthday!) Several of our previous meetups have been held at the Alfred Hotel in Camperdown. When Jessamyn visited, we had one down in the Rocks in the more touristy/historical part of town. What sort of experience are you looking for?

Sounds good to me! I'm happy to go to the Palisade.

Is this going to be seven goddamn dollars for a pint of Guinness, then? *grumble grumble*

Hey, I just realised nobody put this on the sidebar calendar. And as I've never done that before, i'm going to!

Dude, you left out our peacay shout-out! :P

Here's that viral video thing I was telling you guys about. The DJ one is pretty good too...

W0000t! Remember me telling you guys about the jumper I entered into this year's Easter Show? I just found out I got a "Highly Commended" ribbon. So now you know an award-winning knitter. I'll have to wear it to the next meetup. (The jumper, not the ribbon. Although maybe the ribbon.)

Thanks guys! But Ubu, if you keep talking about Daleks, I might have to knit you one.

Here's a picture, if people want to see what it actually looks like...

MeTa post: Queuing questions.
I'm sure you're about to get jumped on by about a hundred people, but... I'd suggest that if the question wasn't important enough to remember, it's better that you didn't ask it. It's a pretty good litmus test to know whether it's a good question to ask, actually. (Like how people will recommend that, if you're debating on a major purchase, you put it off for a week, and if you still want it after a week, then you should buy it.)

Failing that, I doubt you're going to... [more]

MeTa post: Metafilter Runs - Challenge
It's distance-based, and I didn't put in a speed requirement. So if you wanna walk, none of us will know!
posted to MetaTalk by web-goddess at 3:16 AM on March 4, 2008
Ack! Sorry about the doubling up, OmieWise. I didn't see yours anywhere. How the heck did people find out about it? I didn't see a forum post, and it wasn't listed on our group home page. (I actually posted in the support forums about the fact that new challenges don't seem to be listed anywhere.) That's why I made it a two-month challenge, because I thought we'd already lost a couple days at the beginning of the month and I wasn't sure if I could "back-date" a challenge.... [more]

Done! I've edited the two-month challenge to be Run/Walk.

Once Ravelry is open to the general public, I hope we can get a side-bar link to the MetaStitcher group over there. Knitting's an art too!

MeTa post: Sydney meetup!
I'm around, but as I'm stuck at work everyday but Wednesday (the public holiday). Does anybody know if they'll be open? I could see moseying over there once my hangover has settled...

Wait. Tuesday's the public holiday. You know what I mean.

MeTa post: MeFi Mall...who's with me?
I don't have a shop, but I've been making custom sock monkeys for a while now. The biggest hits were gay sock monkey cowboys and Dreamgirls. I've also just finished a Sock Orangutan (aka "The Librarian" from Discworld), which was actually suggested by a comment in this AskMeFi question. If anybody would like me to make them one, just drop me an email or a MeFi mail. (Alternatively, I posted a tutorial if anybody wants to make their own.)... [more]

MeTa post: The Australian Election Thread
My favorite was that time the troll popped in and called it a literal wankfest, and Ubu invited him to be the soggy biscuit in the middle.

(Literal? I meant "Labor." My brain thinks one thing and my fingers type another.)

By that account, I - as an American-Australian - am the worst.

THANKS.

MeTa post: Pictures from Down Under
Sorry I missed it guys. We're still moving and the in-laws were coming to see the place. Let's do another picnic soon so peacay and I can get in on it...

And yeah, Sydney is very green at the moment. Probably due to the fact that we've had a ridiculous amount of rain in the past week.

Ah, see, the perpetual Sydney/Melbourne oneupmanship thing tends to go right over my head. I just linked to it because it was the first relevant results when googling for "Sydney November rain."

MeTa post: 18: The MeFites Have Been Drinking
Hey, that's my Mythbusters costume! Apologies for the broken link; crapflooding comment spammers have knocked my effing site off the Internet this week. I've managed to put up a holding page, but the archives are still hosed. HOWEVER - I did have a copy of our costume photo in my email, and I've uploaded that to my new host. It's here.

MeTa post: Sydney meetup reminder
I'm going to have to change my status to "tentative." We started moving into our new place this week, and Saturday's the only day that the Snook and I myself can both be there to move big things. So it all depends on how much we get done and whether we're too shattered to make it into the city...

MeTa post: Metafilter Runs: November Edition
Whoops, sorry mct! pj asked me to start up the challenge last week since he's away from home, but I forgot the associated Meta post.

Is it worth doing a separate Walking Challenge if the pace limit functionality still isn't working properly? I run and walk, so without the pace limit all of my miles count towards any challenge that I'm in. I'll leave it up to some of the more dedicated walkers if they want to start one.
posted to MetaTalk by web-goddess at 5:33 PM on November 4, 2007
I've deleted a workout before! Case in point: I walk to work. I head out and start the workout... and before I get to the corner, the heavens open and it starts raining. I go to catch the bus instead. Do I really want to upload 500m worth of run and have you all see it? Nope. Delete.

I actually dressed as a fellow MeFite. The costume was great, but I'm a little depressed at just how much I looked like asavage. (I'm a girl.) You can also see my ooky food photos here.

MeTa post: 17: Piles all the way down
This is an odd complaint - but does anybody else have a *lot* of trouble hearing Matt and Jess's voices on an iPod? I often listen to the Mefi podcast on my walk to work, and I have to turn the volume ALL the way up to hear anything at all (and even then I lose half of it). I just can't follow the conversation at all over the street noise and traffic. I don't think it's a general problem with my hearing, because music at that level is deafening. (I've also listened to other voice-based podcasts... [more]

Actually it wasn't just this one, Matt; it's been the last three or four that I've really noticed. I'll try your iTunes trick tomorrow and see if that helps.

MeTa post: Meetup in Sydney
You guys ever been to Redoak in the city? They've got good beer too.

But yeah, I should be able to do that. However, you may all have to shout me since the Snook and I just put down a deposit on our first home and therefore HAVE ZERO MONEY. (Stupid Sydney property market...)
posted to MetaTalk by web-goddess at 8:06 PM on October 8, 2007
Okay, if you guys are gonna talk election THE WHOLE TIME, then I definitely think we should have it outside in the sunshine so I can escape! (Although, there's less alcohol in the great outdoors... Decisions, decisions.)

PS - What the hell's happened to peacay? Doesn't he like us anymore?

I know what you mean about planning-by-committee, peacay. I was just sorry that we missed you at the last meetup, and I was hoping you hadn't forsaken us! :)

(House is in Chippendale, actually... RIGHT NEXT DOOR to our current flat. How nuts is that? Hmm, now I'm thinking I should've pushed for the meetup to be in our neighborhood so I could con you all into moving my furniture...)

Gmaps pedometer is pretty accurate if you're walking around outside. (And don't worry, the site does metric too.)
posted to MetaTalk by web-goddess at 6:26 PM on September 9, 2007
Yes, the runnerplus site has that functionality. (The running challenge, for example, requires a minimum pace of 6:00/mile or 9:00/km, which is just fast enough to require an actual jog.) shinypenny didn't know about it when the challenge was set up, and you can't go back and change it after it's begun. So for now, the walking challenge is counting any distance you do at all, whether walking or running. Those of you keeping track manually can, of course, keep yourselves honest if you want, but I... MeTa post: Coming out of the MetaCloset
Funny story. I've met UbuRoivas at a couple Sydney MeFi meetups over the past year. Six months ago my husband and I went to a going away party for one of his friends, who was leaving on a long cycling trip across Europe with his girlfriend. I was standing at the bar waiting for a beer... when suddenly Ubu appeared. Turns out out friend's girlfriend was his sister. Small world, huh? It was a little awkward because other people (including his family) noticed we knew each other, and we had to... [more]

MeTa post: Is this the end ?
Well, it was APEC weekend and most people either went away for the weekend or were out protesting, so I imagine not a lot of people were sitting in front of their computers.

Oh, wait. You mean I can't extrapolate what's happening in Sydney to the rest of MetaFilter? Sorry, I just get annoyed when people in New York or California do that.
posted to MetaTalk by web-goddess at 7:39 PM on September 8, 2007
Nah, not a world-record. It was kinda rainy so they only got about fifty people to show up. (And NO, the Sydney Meet-up crowd did NOT head over to participate, so don't go trying to analyse those bottoms!)

MeTa post: Sydney BBQ meetup?
T MINUS ONE WEEK, PEOPLE!

kisch, did you find out anything about the barbecues? I just tried calling the Access center to find out if we need to book the coin-operated ones, and nobody answered. Are we just going to take the chance of rocking up and hoping they're available?

(Why does the girl have to organise everything?)
posted to MetaTalk by web-goddess at 6:56 PM on August 30, 2007
Excellent. I'll aim to be there at the coin-operated bbq's at 1ish on Friday. See you all there!

(Incidentally, does anybody know whether it's cool to bring alcohol? I'm just paranoid from stupid American open-container laws.)
posted to MetaTalk by web-goddess at 11:11 PM on September 3, 2007
HA! Just asked the (Sydney Uni graduate) husband about bringing alcohol, and he responded with an eye roll: "It's the uni. You could do it in the NUUUDE and no one would bat an eye." Beer it up!
posted to MetaTalk by web-goddess at 3:19 AM on September 4, 2007

MeTa post: Your single monthly running challenge post
Actually, the more I look at the numbers on the challenge, the weirder they are. A mile is way longer than a kilometer, yet the pace is listed as: 4 min/mi (7 min/km). If you're running a 4:00 mile pace, you should finish a kilometer in 2:30. So the two paces aren't equivalent at all. Is that the default setting or something?
posted to MetaTalk by web-goddess at 5:20 PM on August 24, 2007
Aww, thanks pj_rivera. I hope I didn't sound too complainy. The Runnerplus site looks great and so far it's pretty easy to use. My Nike+ runs have been successfully imported and I've been checking out their graphs. Very pretty.

Overall I'm actually seeing quite a bit of improvement from my interval workouts, and the hamstring problem that plagued me for the past year seems to be resolving itself. Slow and gradual build-up seems to be the right plan. A 7:00 pace is... [more]
