MeTa post: I've got a bunch of good mixes just waiting to be made.
Swapset: factory I got mine in the post yesterday, so fire&wings should be getting it today, the rest of you ... well, it depends on the postal system and whether the customs believe it's a data disk that cost 10p (although that's actually true, perhaps printing a picture on it added value, I don't know).

It's a fairly downbeat collection of tunes, called Desperate Women, although several of the artists don't appear to be that... [more]

Received from: Fire&Wings and brodieshadetree, though I've not listened to them yet.

Fire&Wings - this is a beautiful piece of work, packaging-wise. Is it a real letter, and where did you get it from?

Seconding singular they. There's no need for anything fiddlier than that.

Also, "dick" is German for fat. You can get two constituencies with that, if it's the sort of thing you want to do.

MeTa post: Discussion Point
I'm coming to the conclusion that to wish violence or death on anyone, even as a joke - especially as a joke - coarsens the soul. It's something that grown-ups shouldn't do. And even though I don't think I'll ever qualify as a grown-up, I'd like to pretend.

I've wanted to post that for two days. God knows why.

is "I'd hit it" really sexist?

It's actually one of the sexist tropes that's openly (and astonishingly) misogynistic. In addition to the fact that it's generally used to undermine the female subject of the thread or a female speaker, in three words it:

Identifies the sex act (approvingly) as an act of violence. De-sexualises (and by extension reduces to an object) the person at which it is directed. Generally in... [more]

Also, it's the second part of a statement: "Despite the fact that this thing is ugly, worthless or otherwise undeserving of my attentions, I would have sexual intercourse with it". Which isn't a very nice thing to say, or imply, even in jest.

Um, there's a picture of me in there, holding my ear and looking like I was in pain. Actually I was making a telephone call. I feel the urge to point this out.

It was a lot of fun, though. Next time I notice there's something on, I'll definitely be there.

Out of all the things that happened yesterday - and I'm grateful to Whoever that I wasn't directly involved and that all my friends who did pass through the area missed it - the only thing that made me angry was PPs comments. Anger isn't a useful response to this sort of thing for me - I learned that back when the IRA were bombing London. You can end up being angry and afraid all the time, and that isn't useful.

So, a lot of deep breathing.

I still have to run IE in order to access bank accounts, as the online banking services (in the UK) seem only to work in IE on the Mac. One of them (Cahoot) only recently made changes to their login that effectively locks out non-MS users (i.e. me. I'm not happy about it. Give me my money, you bastards).

Just saying, there are reasons why people might want to use it sometimes, and for people who aren't that interested in software that might translate to all of the time.... [more]

Why, Grangousier, because of the 419 scam?

No, not really. 419 is the only thing that affects people in the North directly, so it's the only bit we notice (there are street scams and bank scams amongst some of the diaspora in more cosmopolitan parts of the world, but that's not on the 'net so much). As one correspondent to gamji.com (lots of interesting stuff, but the code appears to be flaky - it's crashed my browser a few times) put... [more]

you might also be interested in this column in today's Guardian that I just found. What a coincidence! Just pointing it out, not counting it as supporting evidence of any kind, particularly the last couple of paragraphs, which I think are a bit sententious. YMMV.

And it goes without saying that these scams would never have got off the ground without the greed, corruption and stupidity of their victims. There is an interesting contrast between such failings within a broadly law-abiding society (by which I mean ours, if there's any doubt), and within a kleptocracy. It's also worth noticing that a lot of the scams are clear that what the scammee will be assisting is the illegal and immoral removal of funds from a third-world country.... [more]

I went to the Hi-Lo with a female friend who lived round the corner - in return for "allowing" the owner to chat her up (she was gorgeous and very chat-up-able), I got lots of free rum and occasional cigars, she got free rum and quite enjoyed being chatted up so it worked out well for everybody.
