Ask post: I need my keys!
She can drop them off with me, or even in my locked mailbox. I don't know where you live, so that should be safe. Jessamyn can vouch for me.

It requires no effort, and I require nothing in return.

My location is apparently not set correctly. I am 3800 N (near California Ave) if that is helpful. Good luck however you want to go. If my location is better, drop me a line.

Ask post: How does a Protestant minister handle a confession of murder?
I have no clue what your legal obligation is.

There is not a chance in hell I would consider turning him tho, if that helps any.

Ask post: My girlfriend's sister is pregnant.
Keeping your girlfriend is not a problem with a solution that anyone here can give you. Her position is so variable that we cannot predict how she is going to react, and no trick we can tell you is going to change what happens next.

You did something, and now she is going to do something. You have to wait and see what that is. Your best hope is that prior to all of this, you were a really decent fella, and someone worthy of giving a second chance after a very personal... [more]

It appears I deserve a world of stinging. Could I let it run the OS as it stands now if I put it behind a more modern firewall?

You have convinced me to retire the qube. I thank you for your advice.

I like the idea of repurposing it, but this was really a toe dip into the world of more complex administration. I am not sure how I would control the box without the web interface.

I am thinking I can do what I need to with a Mac mini, which is not what I wanted, but is less likely to gunk up innocent people's e-mail.

I am not sure how helpful it will be for you, but the Everyone Drunk But Me online strip details the experiences of a young woman who did what you are hoping to do. If not helpful, it is still enjoyable.

Ask post: National healthcare question.
There was a recent smoking thread where someone was hoping to lean the monopoly of socialized medicine and the forced/shared burden into controlling individual people's behavior. I do not favor national healthcare, so I tend to collect and remember instances where it fails, causes death, or removes choice, but that is no real measure of how well it works. I don't want it because I do not want to socialize risk, it is not for me. I held this view when I was freelancing without insurance and... [more]

Ah. One of those "cut of my nose in spite of my face" sorts, eh?

Not so much. I don't like the trade off, and I don't like probable loss of autonomy.
posted to Ask Metafilter by thirteen at 3:34 PM on February 3, 2005

I guess I don't see how you'd lose autonomy, besides paying a tax?

I was referring to the increasingly common idea that when the risk is shared, the public has a right to have some say in what have been traditionally personal decisions. Talking about making smoking illegal, based on the cost of treatment, when people do not have any choice for opting out of that system is a mean Catch-22. It is not hard to imagine that fast food and sodomy are... [more]

I was thinking of that thread in fact. People are freaking out about it, and I do not expect it to stand. One of the people who thought it was a great idea was one of your countrymen, and frankly I think that sort of thing has a greater chance of getting a toe hold up North.

Don't get upset, you have a system you are happy with, and I am trying to preserve a system that I approve of.

These smoking restrictions ar only now coming into vogue in some of the places you mentioned. I would wait a bit before deciding if there is a trend.

Ask post: Who wants to live forever?
I never wanna die. I would take 10 thousand years (no suicide allowed) if I could get it. I would take it even if it guaranteed a bad back and a sour stomach the whole time. I would take it if I were handed a Monkey paw.

I want to be free of the clock. Assuming everyone was not doing this, it would not take much to own property in the normal timeframe and then build up a bank of savings that would allow you to live a different sort of life than is currently possible for... [more]

Your life will get cheaper as you live longer. You do not need to keep buying things. You can pay off some property in 30 years of working, which leaves you with hundreds of years where you only need to have enough to pay for food and property taxes. Only an idiot would stay on the short life treadmill of consuming and spending. You could work part time and survive. You could leisurely gain valuable skills that could allow you to work even less. You could finally find the real work you were... [more]

Ask post: Mac Voice Recognition and Transcription
Thank you all for the advice. I think Via Voice is out cause I am trying to set this up for 20 editors, interviewing any number of people. I fear it (untrained in 8 directions) would be clean enough to be useful. I still like the idea of replacing our microcassette recorders with iPods, and the wheel control seems like it would do the job fine. I should be able to tweek the jog dial to work with something like the slow down program that wackybrit pointed to?

Thanks again all.

Ask post: Home Equity
A HE line of credit is infact a second mortgage on your home, so you should be careful about running it up too high. If you want to get "free" money out of the equity you should consider refinancing. If the interest rates change, you could find yourself with a nasty surprise.

I also have an Equity line of credit, which we use specifically to improve the house. That way the risk of borrowing against the house is paid off with even more equity when we are done... [more]

Are you replacing the faucet/tap altogether? You could use a recripocating saw on the faucet as close to the basin as you dare and then drill out the bolt if you had to.

Or the Dremel which is less sexy (and quick) than the saw, but seems more practical. Plus it is fun. Wear gogles.

Ask post: How do i recycle my computer monitor
Tandy (Radio Shack) has/had a program in place (I cannot find a link, but I magine you can just call your local). I recently got them to take away a lot of equipment for free. the rub was I think they were losing money on the deal and have begun to charge. I am sure the fee is small enough to be worth paying on a single monitor, and it is nice to do the right thing. Are those new man made diamonds featured in Wired recently available yet? I bet you could get a giant stone for less, and it would be cooler cause it would be both high tech, and have no cruel history.

I would beware porting documents that might have platform specific 3rd party Xtensions at work. I cannot think of anything other than PasteboardXT, but it is something to consider if you are running something interesting. It could be that the effect will just disappear, but it could also be a deal breaker.

Ask post: Interior monologue, externalized.
Most of the self talkers I see seem to be having conversations with invisible people, or are still arguing with some person who is now 3 blocks away. Either way it is disturbing, and triggers alarm in me. I figure if someone cannot keep their mouth shut, they are likely to push you onto the subway tracks, or cut you with something. Keep on your toes, and keep your eyes on them.

I thank you all very much, this is the kind of information I wanted.

I definitely have lead paint according to a testing kit I got at the hardware store. Local laws have changed regarding the disposal of lead paint, as they do not want to place barriers to removal of hazardous substances. I want to do this in a responsible way, but I also need to be somewhat speedy as well. I like what I am reading.

Ask post: Preventative maintenance to keep a toilet from clogging?
Thing is, we seem to have very old and smaller-than-normal pipes (the house is over 100 years old)

And wise you are to avoid them. My house is about 80, and I can tell that drain cleaners were liberally used. Twice in the last year I have gone to Auger out a drain only to encounter a pipe so thin from chemical encounters that the auger ripped right through it.

I am going to try Mr. Dalek's K-67 for maintenance, but in the face... [more]

Ask post: replacement to soda
I am coming up on 2 years since I gave up diet coke. I was downing 18+ cans a day. I quit all at once and switched to nothing but water because I found winding down never lasted long. I craved for about 2 weeks. Then it went away. It came back around 3 months later. The real problem for me was that Diet Coke went with everything for me, and I missed the combination. Water seems like a weak substitute.

I got used to it, and now drink as much water as I did Diet Coke. I... [more]

Ask post: How can I get the sound files out of a Playstation game?
As I recall Blasto was a PS1 game (tho it would be compatable with the new system) You could try downloading one of these Playstation emulators. Once the game is running on your computer there are (I know there are, but I am blanking on the names right now) several resources you can use to capture any sound running thru your machine.
posted to Ask Metafilter by thirteen at 11:27 AM on December 15, 2003

WireTap allows to record any audio playing on your Mac, saving it to a file for later listening or processing. This allows to record news from Internet radio stations such as the BBC News, sound snippets from your favorite DVD movie, record the audio from a game, or even iChatAV conversations. WireTap can record any sound that is playing regardless of the source, so RealPlayer, iTunes, DVD Player, Windows Media Player, etc. are all supported.

So if you have... [more]

I am thinking that repetition is going to become an issue before long (how long between requests for digital camera recommendations) I am assuming that product information sharing is going to become bigger than the current posts reflect. My Brother joined the Marines 3 years ago, and was promised many specific things I was sure would not come to pass, but I was wrong.
