We’re too sophisticated to allow bioregional commerce.

"This is where the "less regulations for the little guy" argument falls down. Safety is safety is safety, regardless of the size of the operation. We can argue all up and down about what exactly is safe vs. what isn't, but the scale of the operation is irrelevant."

This is addressed in great detail in the Omnivore's Dilemma. The short answer is that a lot of what the inspections are there is protect you from are caused... [more]

How large do the numbers have to be? There are millions of pounds of meat recalled every year, and people do get sick from it. I don't argue that it is not nice to have an agency to coordinate the recalls and try to prevent it from happening, but they are there to deal with facilities that process filthy, medicated and diseased animals. Salatin's animals are more likely to become tainted by being processed in a slaughterhouse than by the method he uses. With so much bad meat out there, what... [more]

Nothing to sneeze at
Everytime this comes up I get all pissed off. I don't use pseudoephedrine myself, since some Nyquil gave me the jitters that lasted a solid week, but my wife gets great relief from the stuff when the inevitable cold comes around. The new stuff is junk, and the last time I tried to buy the real product, I got the last box behind the counter, and they said they were not going to carry it anymore. Someone is getting what they wanted out of this slow march, but it was not the majority of people who... [more]

The Life of the Chinese Gold Farmer
I think it is really funny that the ad displayed when you are not logged in is for farmed gold.

I stopped playing awhile back, and am enjoying my freetime. If I were playing on a PVP server I would feel no guilt taking the farmers down.

They are not real jobs because they are fundamentally in conflict with the terms of service. It is a criminal, if fairly harmless, enterprise.

The TOS is the law within WoW, and violation of that in this manner is what I was referring to. Harvesting within the game for profit is against the rules. Forming a gang to do it with or for you is the enterprise.

The other examples you gave are less serious in how they affect game play, so I am guessing they are weighted differently in their enforcement by moderators. LordBen will probably be asked to change his name at worst. The farmers are gonna get booted.... [more]

A buddy of mine pointed out that 3rd party people are encouraged by Blizzard to create add ons for the game, so I take back the part about the only legitimate income from the game comes from the company.

Some of you don't like the outlaw talk regarding the farmers. They are stealing the rightful game experience from the people who pay their own money to play. Call them what you want, it does not matter, they still suck. I cannot think of any other area of everyday life... [more]

V: I called it an enterprise as well. If you don't see the problem with someone harvesting the resources and interfering with a game that people are paying to play, I don't see how I am going to convince you otherwise. I had a killer analogy about an all you can eat fish fry, but I no longer feel like typing it out.

The problem with music, redux.
Love her or hate her, Courtney Love has a brain, and when she uses it, it's impressive.

She lifted the whole thing for the Albini/Baffler piece that was published 7 years prior. I have never seen her piece mentioned without someone mentioning the obvious plagiarism, and I guess I get the honor this time around. Maybe she can be impressive, but this is not evidence of it.

Teen does 10 years for oral sex
This kid: had consensual sex

That is not what she is saying. He can say that, the jury might think that, but it does not explain why the first thing she did when she woke up was to call her mother and tell her that she thought she had been raped.

I don't think consentual is the right word to be using here.

Saddam Hussein is Dead
The best plan I heard for getting out of this was pressing his uniform, and putting him back in power before we evacuate. I don't care that he is dead, but it is incredibly stupid to have done this while we occupy the country. No one will believe this was legitimate, or that the US was not pulling the strings. The 21st century should not suck this much.

Hey, teacher, leave those kids alone!
My wife and I are associated with some unschooling organizations, as well as like minded parents in our area. Our daughter is two and a half at this point, and we are excited that we are able to give her the opportunity to guide her own education.

The conversation thus far covers all the stuff that always comes up. People tend to have the same fears and biases, and that is fine. No thoughtful rebuttal by me is going to change anyones mind. Either the idea appeals to you... [more]

the homeschooler is always a first-time teacher of whatever new lesson comes up, whereas the schoolteacher has seen what works and what doesn't, and knows the material deeply.

You aren't really addressing the idea of unschooling here. It does not matter if the parent does not know a subject very well. It is probably more exciting if they do not, so long as they are willing to help find the answer. The idea is to figure things out, and let the child... [more]

Speechless and saddened.
Den Beste appears to be a sock-puppet, whose only purpose in these threads is to establish certain talking points, and to thereby frame the debate for or against - there is no need for any follow up as long as the "yes it is - no it isn't" dynamic dominates the conversation.

I have no response to the part about his motivations, but I don't think a credible argument can be made that the account is a mask. The man has been around a long time,... [more]

US to charge citizens for evacuation from Lebanon
I mean it is the very root of what government is supposed to do.

The idea of government is so flexible and nebulous, that it seems weird to me that someone could say so definitely what government is supposed to do. Is there some Platonian font of government that this policy is drifting from? This situation does not sound like something our framers would have considered, or been concerned about addressing, which suggests to me that this sort of rescue... [more]

"I have accomplished nothing and I am nothing."

Perhaps homeschool advocates could tell me why parents who want to homeschool should not be licensed by the state the same way public educators are? Surely parents so clever and talented with natural gifts for educating children would have no trouble with the state/national teaching exams.

I am going to guess that is because those tests are in place to prove that the educators are worthy of teaching the child in place of the parent. It is... [more]
