How long does it take ant traps to work? I used Combat Traps that have the Combat Ant killing Gel inside them.

Can you recommend some good mystery novels for me to read? The last mystery novels I read that I really liked were the Hilary Tamar series by Sarah Caudwell. I liked those because they were fairly light and not gory. But I especially liked them because the dialogue/narration was sharp, witty, and wry. What are some other mystery writers who write like this?

How do sites choose their security pictures? I'm talking about the images that some sites (like banks' websites) use so that you know you are logging into to the real site and not some spoof site (at least I think that's what they're for).

Can you suggest a simple 2d drawing program for Mac OS X (Tiger)? I'd like something with the simplicity of MS Paint. I'm trying to draw some very simple line diagrams. If it's free (or cheap) that would be good.

Can you point me towards a concise summary of the major events from the entire run of the Sex and the City show?

I want to buy my mother a new DVD player for her birthday/mother's day. She wants one that can record VHS to DVD. When I went on Amazon to look for such a thing, there were an overwhelming number of possibilities. Can you help explain to me what some of the features are?

Has anyone ever flown Zoom Airlines for a transatlantic (or other long) flight? I had never heard of them until recently, and the reviews online aren't very good. This is probably due to the fact that disgruntled people take it to the Internet, so I'd like to know of your experiences, good or bad.

Does anyone know of a good shop in the Maryland/DC area that sells used/refurbished cameras?

I just had my eyebrows waxed for the first time ever last week. I am a lackadaisical plucker at best, so this is probably the best my eyebrows have ever looked. How long should I wait before I get them waxed again (i.e. how much time or how long should I let the hairs get)? Also, what kind of maintenance should I be doing in between?

I
read that Amy Winehouse was denied a visa to come to the US for the Grammy's, so she had to perform via satellite. But, since she's a UK citizen, wouldn't she be covered under the
US Visa Waiver Program? Why did she need to apply for a visa before coming to the US?

I'm using the 'make' utility on a Linux system. Is there a way in a Makefile to set all the intermediate files as PRECIOUS without having to list them individually?

Is there a way to manually upload photos to an iPod Video? i.e. without syncing and erasing the files already on my iPod? I already manually manage music and video on it. I'd take any solutions for Windows or Mac OS.

I once found (and bookmarked)
this page of all of chococat's music. I like it because it has the little flash player, so I can listen to all of his tunes. How do I get to the same kind of page for other MeFi Musicians? I've tried looking on members' profile pages, but the link to all of their songs goes to the music parts of their Activity pages. Thanks.

A Mexican friend of mine recently used a Spanish phrase that literally translates out to, "The world is like a handkerchief." He says it means the same as "it's a small world." However, he doesn't know the origins of this phrase or why it means that. Being mathematicians, we think it's that any point on the handkerchief can be brought arbitrarily close to any other point on the handkerchief. Does anyone know the origin of this phrase?

My friend from school claims that the average American only has about 10,000 words in his/her everyday vocabulary. As an example, he cites USAToday, saying if we were to count the number of distinct words used in that paper, there would only be a few thousand. I would like to check this out. Does anyone know of any software that will do a
distinct word count?
