MeFi post: 475 Kent Avenue
OK, I'm going to agree with BeerFilter - this is self-linky smelling. Ebray has made 3 completely pro forma comments today, then this post. I flagged, and was going to move on, but decided to poke around instead.

According to his profile, Ebray is Evan Bray. Evan Bray commented on an unrelated post on Gothamist saying he is a building and zoning consultant for an NYC real estate group. On the 475kent site linked in the post, there is a forum. You have to register... [more]

Wow. I found the black and white part in the middle, where he sits in a coffee shop, looking normal, but signing the same lyrics, really kind of subversive and wonderful. Totally unexpected and cool, thanks, FunkyHelix!

MeFi post: Automata are mechanical objects endowed with life.
Awesomely lovely/creepy post! Seeing the automaton that writes brought back a fuzzy memory of a book I loved in grade school about a girl and a mystery she solved using clues from several automata. One wrote words, one had something to do with music...I can't remember any more, and I can't find it in Worldcat with such sketchy details, but I'm seized with the desire to find the book and read it. If it doesn't sound familiar to any of you, I'm headed to AskMe.

Did Sharon loosen up when the camera was off? She seemed absolutely frozen with that smile and the echo-y talking.

MeFi post: Public libraries with Online Content
Residents of Kansas can go to any local library and get a Kansas Library Card, which grants access to these databases. I think libraries with online services are more the norm than not. Very few academic libraries require you to be physically present to use resources any longer, and most mid-to-large sized public libraries are the same.

stbalblach, libraries have long been more than stacks of books, and the notion that one would go to a library to "wait in line... [more]

MeFi post: ...and left nought but ash.
I live in Kansas; my best friend grew up in Greensburg, and her parents still live there. I can pick out her childhood home on the aerial photos, at least, what's left of it. People got away with their lives, because "only 20 minutes" is a lot of warning time for people used to tornados. Everyone who lived there has been evacuated to neighboring towns. My friends' parents spent Friday night in a shelter, then were picked up by her sister on Saturday morning, as they lost their... [more]

MeFi post: Kurt Vonnegut Dies at 84
I saw Vonnegut once, when I lived in Chicago. He was on a signing tour for Palm Sunday. I waited in line for hours at a Kroch & Brentano's to have him sign my first edition of Breakfast of Champions. The woman in front of me in line had a baby and a toddler in one of those double strollers.

When she got to the head of the line, he looked at her stroller and said that he'd always wanted to borrow one baby and a double stroller and go to a playground in a park.... [more]

MeFi post: Rumsfeld quits
So, resigned or no, he's still coming to Kansas State University tomorrow as part of the Landon Lecture series. If you're curious as to what he could possibly say now, you can watch it live online at 11AM CST. I'll be interested to see the response he gets from the 500-ish special invited guests from nearby Ft. Riley.

If you bought the book directly from the publisher, they'll refund your money. Probably not useful for most, but maybe libraries could get the credit.

dno, the post title is the same on the feeds and on Mefi. Using Firefox or IE, the post title appears as the window title for the specific thread. It's not the same as the text of the post; that's because the poster specifies a title when he/she posts. Probably not very clear if you've never posted a link.

MeFi post: The Summer Moon Illusion
The article mentions you can make the illusion go away by looking through a "narrow opening of some kind". You can also make it disappear by turning your back to the moon, bending over, and looking at it upside down through your legs. It's fun, and leaves ample opportunity for "mooning" jokes.

MeFi post: The Passion
So it's excellent, and based on a true story. Is he objecting to the fact that it shows a less-than-sympathtic portrayal of an incident in the history of the Catholic Church? Well, boo-frickin'-hoo.

MrMoonPie, I think that's exactly his point. If you're going to call Gibson's movie "Jew-bashing", then any movie that portrays historical events where someone acted badly is "someone-bashing".

MeFi post: Dean Scream Redux
Is there any way to get this perspective other exposure than on a few web blogs?

Actually, the ABC evening news played a similar clip two (?) nights ago. Peter Jennings seemed genuinely contrite about the overkill, and had statements from network news execs at "all the major news outlets except NBC" stating that a line had been crossed. There's a link to the video here, but it's "premium content".

OK, heimchen, let's try that. The word "blue" is often used to imply adultness - as in "blue movie". The last word before blue is pale.

So, if that's right, what do we get? Either a pale yellow, or an implication that Eddie Murphy wants something pale? I'm not really sure what the supplemental supplemental clue does for us....

If my brain doesn't implode soon, it will be a miracle.... [more]

whoa, ed. Don't get down on yourself. I, for one, wasn't actually mad about the mis-scoring, just pointing it out and making my own injoke in the process.

Can you tell me if the answer to the supplemental clue is, in fact, pale? And if that's the answer, what do I do with it?

Thanks for the thread. However it turns out, it's been fun.

shoepal, I think the word that's wrong is "liking", and that "have" was correct. If you look at philclifff's attempt, it scored a 43. If "liking" was right, it would have been 44.

I just hate to see you expend so much energy trying to replace the word that seems to be right.

B is fine with me. I won't feel bad about not solving it, and I don't think there's any one person who actually "deserves" to win the prize.

I'll second paradigm's comment, too. This has been cool for me because of the group effort. It's the first time I've felt like a member of mefi rather than just someone who showed up late to the party without a date.

OK, I think shoepal has it with "seeing". It works with the card catalogue part of the clue, and it ties back to jaundice better than deluxe does, jaudiced eye being a reference to seeing the world in a certain weary way.

I don't know what it has to do with the rolling bones, but I've decided not to let little trivialities like not understanding bother me here.

Well, marcusb, I'll be sure to mention to the St. Luke's Lutheran Church down the street that they've ceased to be Protestant. Many Protestant churches recognize and revere saints.

And while we're on the subject, the Catholic Church doesn't claim to make anyone a saint. The process of beatification and cannonization is a simple... [more]

wsg, I had that problem too.

Running Win2k, fixed it by going to sound control panel, Audio tab, unchecking "use only preferred devices", then clicking Advanced under Playback, going to Performance tab, and clicking Restore Defaults.

Of course, that explanation makes it sound like I did those things with a sense of direction and purpose, but actually I was clicking madly and cursing all the while. I'm pretty sure those are the last two things I tried.

Widdershins, it's true. Your brain just expects all the light squares to be equal, and tries to compensate for the shadow. You can watch an animated version here.

What's really cool is to open the jpg in photoshop, take a little rectangle from A, copy it, and slide it across the board to B. You'll swear it changes color as it goes. My memory may be faulty, but I swear I remember going into one of these houses at Old Abilene Town, a tourist-y reconstruction of an Old West cattle town. The thing is, I don't remember anything mystical being attached to it. It was called the Wacky Shack, or something like that, and you got to it by going out the exit of the saloon.

The "changes" are not so much a revision as an addition. Currently there are three sets of five mysteries (joyful, sorrowful, glorious) which focus on different aspects of the lives of Jesus and Mary. Most people choose one of the three sets when praying.

The new changes involve a new set of five mysteries focusing on Jesus' public life. If you're curious, read about how the rosary was originally developed as a way of giving monks who could not or who had... [more]
