Oh, hey, y'all. Don't sweat the tivoing, the portion with me in it was so...short...that it isn't worth the megabytes (and it's not like they were asking my opinion on Tivo allowing advertisements on portions of the screen ;). I did have fun doing it, though, as I'd never heard of speed dating before, and it was hilarious (and quite fruitful). A little background here, and a list of silly questions I was debating on asking here.
Didn't... [more]

My god. Matt finds a source of revenue through which he can spend the time and money to keep the site running, gives you an extra pony by giving you the option to turn it off, and yet there's still bitching.
Give it a rest, or don't complain if someday Matt doesn't have the resources to run the site the way you want it run.

Isn't this whole discussion moot, because you have the option of hiding the damned ad if you don't like it? Christ. Click to hide the ad, and get on with your day.
Sometimes it really is that simple.

Um, I did read the discussion. And I still think that this is much ado about nothing, if the fact remains that you can turn off the ad, and go about your day.

Hey agregoli, can I ask you to address why simply clicking "hide ad" is insufficient?

Many of the men who've posted like the ads or don't see what the big deal is.
Don't forget those of us who know that SG has been advertising on MeFi for a while, and who really don't give a fuck, one way or another.

With all due respect, jon, getting all preachy in the morning and doing the exact opposite later that night isn't exactly the path to credibility.

People just don't react well to being told not to speak. And I think that goes for all kinds of people.
That has absolutely nothing to do with the request that Matt has made to keep the discussion relevant and to shut up if you have nothing to add that will help answer the question.

The part about not being helpful is correct. On the green.
Since this post was on the green, I don't see what further needs to be discussed.

A particularly egregious example of commentators...
That kind of broad question on an inherently controversial topic is going to invite debate.
Ask.Me is not a debate site.
So, next time someone asks about cooking a vegetarian meal, I'll pop in and tell them to shut up and have a steak. Or in a cocktail mix thread I'll link to AA literature. Even better, if someone asks where they can get an abortion, I'll call them a baby killer.... [more]

i'm all for good punctuation and spelling, but come on. save the bitching for *really* annoying things, like the fact that 1 out of 3 ask.me posts starts with the annoying ____filter prefix.
most of us are pretty smart, and can figure out what the topic of your question is without you having to resort to a joke that is multitudes lamer than any pancake/pony/vibrator/overlords joke ever was.
(preemptive whinefilter post, because i know one of you mofos was going to do it)

You can eliminate the two second rule by not bothering to read any posts with more than three sentences, like I do.

I think the issue is whether sites like 9622 succeed in diverting chat from metafilter to outside venues or not.
Have you seen the 9622 thread? Can you imagine how bludgeoned it would have been had 9622 not split off?

Oh, stop that. I don't give a hoot what your user id is, but since signups have been opened, there's been an unquestionalbe degradation in quality here.

In all fairness, this discussion should only be open to those who have actually made a $5 contribution. To all others it should be a matter of complete indifference how Matthowie deals with freely given money.
In all fairness, the question was not what was Matt going to do with the money (I don't care if he buys a diamond-encrusted pacifier for Jr. with it), but what effect it has on a community when some pay and some don't. It's a donation.
