Best of Manhattan 2001, the annual guide published by the New York Press might come in handy in case you are visiting New York City to boost our tourism industry. If you already live here, you may want to pick up a free copy on your way to the subway. New York's other free alternative weekly still has their Flash powered Best of NYC 2000 along side a depressing obit to NYC's dying night life on their site. Time Out New York's city guide, and the restaurant reviews in the best 100 and the 2001 Eating and Drinking Awards might come handy for weekend plans. And if you really want to see a hidden treasure of NYC, you may want to go see the Panorama of The City of New York, a 'living model of the City,' first built for the 1964 World's Fair, at the Queens Museum of Art.

allow me to second the panorama - a wonderful wonderful exhibit that most new yorkers i know have never even bothered to see...

i'll confess that i wondered, in the wake of the attacks, what they'd do about the model of the trade center. i suspect, since they do update the model (the trade center buildings weren't part of the original '64 model, obviously), that they'll remove them. hopefully they'll make a separate exhibit of them somehow...

Fair play to you Tamim, this is the sort of thing New York needs. I think though that the drop-off in tourism often comes more from the idea that the atmosphere will be subdued rather than the lack of interesting things to see. All the more reason to praise your post, which must have taken ages I reckon. I would have double posted it myself, just for good measure.

We had to skip our customary fall trip to New York this year, not because of 9.11 but because we've got a 4-month-old baby and no regular babysitting yet. I'll have to bookmark this post for next year's trip.

Dreadful! No place to fiddle while Rome burns...

i'm sorry -- there's something wrong with wanting have a nice night out? it's not like people are proposing a clam bake on top of the rubble.

I just got back from Manhattan 45 minutes ago. I flew in for three days, namely to see Bjork at Radio City Music Hall. It was my first trip to the city and I must say I had the time of my life.

I took in a Broadway play, dined out for every meal (my favorite was the Afghanistan Kebab place--yum!), saw a movie, and obviously, the concert was phenomenal.

Other than the girl-on-girl fist fight the last night I was there, I sensed an overwhelming solidarity from the people of New York. And I am a better person for having visited.

I love NY and drive up there every so often (from DC). One thing that I really hate about NY is the cops. They're the biggest assholes I've ever encountered.

I'm not prejudiced against cops, though. Washington, DC police force is extremely friendly, polite, and they really go out of their way to be helpful. Too bad they have such a poor reputation.
